Wade and Gavin were heading home together. As they walked down the sidewalk, they heard their names being called. They stopped and turned. Kyle was running towards them, with his guitar over his shoulder. He reached them and grabbed Wade's wrist for support while he caught his breath. «Wait, I'm going that way too.» he muttered breathlessly.
«You could have called me.» said Gavin.
Wade, on the other hand, remained silent, stunned. His eyes were fixed on the firm grip Kyle had on his wrist. As soon as Kyle noticed, he released him. He apologized. «I hope I didn't hurt you.»
Wade came to his senses. He shook his head without saying a word. He feared that if he spoke, his voice would betray him. He was trying to behave but, he was sure, for a moment his heart had fluttered.
They resumed walking. Gavin and Kyle talked about their days at the camp and Wade listened to them. The more they talked, the more information he got about Kyle, and the more he wanted to get to know him better. He seemed like a fun person from their stories but Wade wanted to confirm it in person.
«I’m arrived.» Kyle announced, stopping in the square, a few steps from the train station.
«You’re performing?» Gavin asked him.
Kyle nodded. «This is the best time. There are a lot of people when it starts to get dark.», he took the guitar off his shoulders and greeted them. «See you at school.»
«See you tomorrow.» Gavin said, starting to walk again.
Wade hesitated for a moment but then followed him.
Even though they were moving away, he could still hear Kyle tuning his guitar and his curiosity became more and more overpowering, until he couldn't control it. He stopped suddenly, much to Gavin's astonishment. «What’s wrong?»
«I need to go back.» replied Wade.
Gavin smiled. «You want to hear him sing. I knew it. The charm of musicians.»
Wade didn't dignify him with an answer, turned and headed back towards the square. With each step Kyle's voice became clearer and clearer. But he didn't get too close, he didn't want Kyle to see him. It would have been too embarrassing.
Kyle was already surrounded by quite a few people, clapping in time to the music. It felt like a real concert where he was the star. He seemed to shine with a totally different light, there among the crowd. Inexplicably, Wade found himself completely mesmerized, looking at him and listening to his voice. And if his mother hadn't called him, he would have stayed there until the sun rose.
