Paul Magnus was accused of murder at the age of 18 when his parents were found dead, torn apart by what looked like meat hooks. He's been on death row for two decades, awaiting execution. When the call went out for the desperate and the distraught citizens, he was first in line, and was accepted into the program for his reported brutality, though he saw it as a chance for redemption.
Abby Arris was a maid and a woman of God. She believed that if she did well in life by serving those who served the poor, she would be welcomed into the next world with open arms despite her lack of church attendance due to her endless daily toil. When the manor was destroyed in the Blitz, she found herself without a home. She was discovered by the recruiters in a shelter, huddled in the corner with her bible and her brass crucifix necklace. Now she seeks to serve the Lord in another way, by eliminating the abominations that mankind has created.

They have decided that in order to fight monsters, they must create monsters of their own: the Synthetones.
