"Oh, what a pleasant surprise. What brings you here so suddenly?" Calista asked with a warm smile as she watched Yuki approach her. Her brows furrowed in worry and confusion when she noticed the serious look on Yuki's face.
"Did you know about Hiro being a vessel for the 7 sins?" Yuki's forwardness caught Calist off guard.
"Of course, I didn't know. But do watch your tone child, I don't take kindly to disrespect," Calista warned.
"But you're a god, shouldn't you have known? And why exactly did you send Abaddon to us? You know I can handle myself,"
"Maybe so. But do you have the heart to herd your friends?" Calista's tone grew dark as Yuki's offensive tone didn't change. Yuki crinkled her face in disdain when Calista compared her friends to sheep.
"You failed to keep Natsumi in line, didn't you? What if another chooses to betray you?" Thoughts raced through Yuki's mind as she listened to Calista speak.
"I still don't get that either," Yuki finally responded, she always forced herself to overlook things, but nothing made sense.
"Nothing has to make sense. One day you'll understand, but for now, do as you are told. No more questions,"
"No, no, I can't just drop this. I did everything you asked without question for 4 years, and now I need things clarified. How did-" Before Yuki could finish her words, Calista cut her off by gently taking Yuki's hands and placing them over her mouth.
Calista shushed her softly and spoke with a now soft and gentle tone. "Quiet child, just listen to me. This world is unpredictable, it's cruel and it's strange. No one is all-knowing, not even a god. But know this, no matter what happens, I'll only have your best interest in mind. So trust me, ok? And one day you'll understand,"
Yuki stared at Calista silently.
"You don't have to think.. just.. follow," Calista nearly whispered as she slowly let go of Yuki's hands.
Yuki stayed silent, even though she knew it shouldn't be pushed aside, she felt oddly calm all of a sudden. She knew it was wrong, she knew she should raise her questions and demand answers.
Yet every part of her trusted Calista in full. Something about Calista just made Yuki feel safe.
"Now, starting first thing in the morning me and the other deities will be assigning you and your friends to duties. The human world has gotten a little out of control during the 4 years, I'm sure you're aware." Calista began, her tone dismissing the previous conversation topic.
"I want you all to handle any threats to humans. Kill or drive away, I have no care for the outcome you choose. If you can manage to handle human affairs, then I'll ask more of you and your group. Is that understandable?" Calista asked as she shifted her stance to be slightly more comfortable.
"Yeah. I understand," Yuki said with a small nod. Calista smiled warmly and gently caressed Yuki's cheek with a finger.
"Good, now head home, and don't forget to search for a partner during your travels,"
"Why?"
A faint giggle escaped Calista's lips at Yuki's question. "I suppose I'll answer you just this once... Like I said before, you never know who will betray you, but family will never betray you... I want you to find love, to have children no matter how you choose to. I want you to have trustworthy people who'll never harm you,"
Yuki hesitated for a second before refuting Calista's words. "My friends are trustworthy,"
"No. They aren't, not to me," Calista responded quickly without missing a beat.
Calista then decided to continue before Yuki could speak again. "Now, as I said, head home... I'll leave the information for your assignment in the mail. You and whoever else I and the others decide is best fit for the job will head out right after you all eat. In return, each time you or the others complete an assignment we'll reward you with resources. Alright?"
And that was the final word, Yuki was unable to speak, she was well aware of that. Speaking up against a god was dumb, and even though Yuki wore her stupidity-like armor, going against Calista was the wrong choice. She questioned her enough, and Calista wouldn't budge any more than she already has.
Yuki has known that well over the 4 years, and yet hope leads her to believe that one day Calista would tell her everything.
All Yuki wanted was to understand, but all she could do was travel down her own path and hold those she cared for close.
No matter what Calista puts her through, if she can protect the others from this day forth then she'll bear with it.
Yuki will live her life in false ignorance as if she were residing in paradise formed solely by the hands of Calista.
