As we passed through the empty streets of Piety, the soft touch of the almost non-existent wind caressed my skin, as if it was making an unfruitful effort to make the hangover run in the morning bearable. The orange tones of the rising sun were slightly visible behind the many sleeping colorful houses on the horizon.
Despite the complete absence of life outside, I acknowledged that it slowly began to stir inside some of the nearby dwellings. Mostly people waking up, having their breakfasts, getting their kids ready for school.
I couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to have such a normal day, today or any day. If I've had one of those, I surely can't remember. Real nice childhood, right?
Despite the Escape’s vibrant colors, my day started in grays. To me, colors aren’t just details; they’re everything.
In front of me, Clovis, the friend who kindly raided my house and turned my nice and easy hateful morning into a living nightmare (it also became slightly more thrilling, I must confess), was trying to hold his breath. Unlike me, he was not as used to running. Even though my head was about to explode in pain, my body, accustomed to heavy labor, entered a state of semi-meditation. I have no idea how long we’ve been running.
Some of the people began to leave their homes. The small houses on the street were mostly juxtaposed side by side, with no space between them, a wooden door, and a single window adorning the facade, some of them flaunting pretty flowers in some kind of vase.
While the people left their homes, some taking their children, some fully alone, most of them bearing a tired look on their faces. It's damn too early, I completely agree with you, guys. Where are they going? Will they take the transportation and go to Aurelia that soon to earn their living? I really do detest that filthy city, The Big Block, as they are so proud to say. My ass…
Though I really wish I could someday experience having a normal life.
Unlike me, as Clovis ran, he made sure, at every movement, no one was looking, not anyone from the Official Guard, anyways. I guess I just needed to leave the house a little bit to lash a bit of anger out.
"I didn't quite think about the fact that I'm on the run with a superstar," cried my friend as he told me to stop and stood behind a wall, looking to the other street. I looked and saw three guards asking something around on the next block.
"Superstar? What do you mean?" I asked in a kind of rhetorical way, as I was quite sure I knew what he was talking about.
"What do I mean? It's likely that everyone here in Piety heard about you. Half of them think you have some kind of superpowers, the other half think you're a wacko! And I'm pretty sure the second group is the right one." He said with a laugh escaping through the corner of his lips, a comment I couldn’t agree more with. I'm surely a nutjob in my own way, not that I care even a bit about what anyone thinks of me. Except that I probably do care a little, maybe a lot more than I would like.
"Pretty sure everybody around thinks I'm crazy, but it's not like I give a shit about any of this."
"That's putting aside the fact you're probably the hottest guy around. Lucky bastard, I wish I had one day of your life, Leo boy."
"Yeah, I'm sure you do."
As the guards went off, Clovis pointed forward and started running again. I was not even quite sure why I was blindly following this idiot, but I couldn’t manage to make any decisions right now. I was OK with just running for a while. Wow, a cute little black and white kitten. I really should adopt one anytime, it's so cute. Yeah, sure, the way things keep happening, what would I do in a situation like this? Flee from my own house and abandon it? I could certainly take it with me, so we could have a less than optimal survival shitty life together. Am I really that bad of a person?
The impact that followed was more than enough for me to wake up from my daydream state, my hands doing their best to hold onto my bag, so it doesn’t fall on the street. I looked at the boy I stumbled into, having no idea who he was, but he was surely in a hurry as well.
"Please, forgive me..." Doing my best to apologize without interrupting my quest to arrive as fast as possible wherever I was going. What? Purple? That's odd.
