A Peek Inside

A Peek Inside

Dec 13, 2023

Yvette was stuck in a foggy memory as she sat on the edge of a crumbling cliff. As she was pulling the grass from the ground, she heard footsteps behind her. "I don't want you to let me go", a voice whispered. Yvette refused to look back and continued, her gaze shifting to the sea in front of her. She stood and walked towards the edge.
She began to hold out her hands as she swayed forward and back, closing her eyes as she imagined jumping off, a smile on her face. The voice then spoke again, "Please, I know you still love me, or is your love so shallow to just forget about me?".
She stopped, but again refused to look back, and with a deep breath, she threw herself off the edge. She began to laugh as she felt free for the first time in a long time. The waves appeared closer and closer, until she crashed in, her body no longer visible, gone for good.

Yvette jolted awake, gasping for air. She lay still for several seconds as she tried to remember her dream, but couldn't. Her eyes adjusted to her surroundings, but she quickly jumped in surprise as she found herself inches away from Cane's face.
He slept on the edge of the couch, sitting on the floor. As she looked around, she saw her hand tightly holding Canes, and a foggy memory rose from beneath. A soft touch on her head as she called out for him. Her face felt hot with embarrassment.
She tried to maneuver herself out, but she put too much weight on her injured hand. Pain went through her entire body, and she squeezed Cane's hand, startling him awake.
Cane shook awake, and the first thing he saw was Yvette contorting in pain as she groaned, "Oh man, are you alright, do you need me to take you to the hospital?", he said with urgency, but his nerves settled as she began to laugh. "No, it's okay, I just put a little too much weight on my hand, it's okay,". She sat up as they stared at each other, neither letting go of the other's hands. He smiled as he knelt, "I'm so glad you're okay".

Yvette gathered her clothes for a shower, and Cane slept a little more. She previously offered the clothes he had gifted her, so he could at least change out of the current bloody ones. He agreed to the offer. She then stepped into the bathroom and locked the door.
Cane waited until he heard the water run and opened his eyes. He made his way to the kitchen and opened the freezer door; the finger was still present. The longer he stared, the better he felt, but he didn't know why.
He wondered if this was Silas, or what was left of him. He felt as if they were entwined somehow, as if she could be able to understand him.
He wanted to know what she was thinking. What drove her to do this?. He kept looking around to see if he could find more, but no more parts were visible around her fridge.
He walked around the apartment and saw a photo of a couple on a small table by the window. A beautiful woman with obvious smile lines, hair the length of her shoulder, and eyes so black that you could not see the pupil. She stood next to a man a head taller than her, his eyes a pure white, and a strong-looking demeanor. They both held a baby in their arms with the biggest eyes Cane had ever seen. Cane began to feel uneasy by the photo and set it face down, "That's enough of that".
As he walked around more, he began to feel on edge; he felt it was due to the clutter that was created. He began to fold the blankets that were strewn about. He felt better after this.
He sat on the sofa and proceeded to take out his phone. He took pictures of every detail in the room, savoring every moment he was there, but it didn't feel like it was enough. He stood and made his way to the bathroom door. He placed his hand on the doorknob but didn't turn it. A thought went through his head as he stared at the door, "She never told me where she lived, did she?".

Yvette scrubbed the blood, sweat, and stickiness from her body. She couldn't believe she burdened Cane with dragging him to the hospital, then to her apartment, where she made him sleep on the floor. She felt ashamed. However, as she thought about the events that transpired, something wasn't right.
An odd feeling began to well in the pit of her stomach, but it was quickly squashed as the pain in her hand flared again. She shook her head and tried to hurry, but it was difficult to do while injured. She couldn't imagine how uncomfortable Cane was feeling right now. He was covered in her blood and tired beyond belief.

Cane heard the water turn off, and footsteps got closer to the door. He quickly made his way back to the couch and closed his eyes. His heart was beating rapidly as his mind raced with the revelation, "I fucked up". Moments passed, and he heard the bathroom door open, light steps coming towards him. He then felt a gentle touch on his shoulder as a voice told him, "Cane, it's ready for you".

As Cane showered, Yvette began to prepare breakfast. She started with premade pancake flour, and into a bowl she filled with water and the flour. She then took out a nonstick pan and began to heat it.
As it warmed, she got another bowl, cracked a few eggs, and broke the yolks. She then added a splash of milk, salt, and pepper and whisked until combined. She then took out another pan and turned on another burner. She cut a few blocks of butter and let it melt on low heat. With that out of the way, she turned to her toaster oven and took out the tray. She lined the tray with parchment paper and set the bacon on top. She popped it in and set a timer. Her attention was then back to the pancake batter, and she began to pour. She cooked them in batches of three on the hot pan, the warmth engulfing her face.
As they took their time to cook, she saw the butter had finally melted and began pouring in the egg mixture. She waited until the edges were semi-cooked and brought in those outer ribbons to the center. She repeated the processes slowly so the heat would be retained.

Cane came out of the shower and dried himself with the towel she provided. He tried on the clothes he had previously given her and saw they were a pretty good fit, which confused him, " Why did I pick out such big clothes for her? Why did I give her something that would fit me?". However, as he smoothed out the wrinkles, he could smell her scent. He brought the fabric to his nose and rubbed the shirt all over his face as he giggled and smiled devilishly. He pressed them more on his body as if trying to become one with them.
As he was done with his odd impulses, he cleaned his glasses and put them on as he looked in the mirror. He slicked his hair back, his smile disappearing, "I hope you never question me, Yvette".

As Cane stepped out of the bathroom, he was met with a feast before his eyes, the smell like heaven for his empty stomach, "Are you sure we can finish all this?". She quickly turned and laughed, "Don't worry, I have a big appetite".
Yvette was multitasking as she offered Cane something to drink, "Oh, would you like some coffee, tea, milk, or juice?". Cane snickered, "I refuse to believe you have all of that. But, why don't we start somewhere else, though? Let me help you before you reopen your wound".
Yvette smiled and accepted his offer. She pointed at the cabinets where he took out two sets of cups, plates, and silverware and set them on the table. As he heard the time ding for the bacon, he took out a plate and placed a paper towel on the surface, placing the bacon on top to help soak in the grease. Yvette then let him help with the eggs, and with her direction, the eggs came out fluffy and warm. And at last, Yvette was able to flip the last pancake. She stacked them like a tower and set them at the center. They both sat, and Yvette poured two glasses of water.
Cane had never seen Yvette eat. She was fast and a bit sloppy, yet she always stopped to clean the corners of her mouth and check that her surroundings were clean. He thought it was funny yet charming. Yvette also found herself staring at Cane as he ate. He was elegant yet clumsy. He cut his food into manageable pieces but sometimes forgot to put the knife down or forgot which utensil he used, thus placing the knife in his mouth. He mixed and matched as his food sometimes fell.
They both began to laugh at each other as they tried to cover their mouth full of food. The warmth in the room was palpable, the comfort they felt in each other's presence, both wanting nothing more for this moment to last forever.
