Let’s be clear here, buy purse, I mean a drawstring pouch worn on your belt. Pockets are a more modern invention. The term cutpurse was a thief who would steal your pouch by cutting the strings from your belt as they ran by. When you spend 8 to 10 hours in a day wearing these sorts of clothes, for many days, you get used to having all your stuff hanging off your belt. Multiple purses and pouches, a drinking vessel, a knife for eating etc. You go back to wearing jeans and it’s weird to not have everything you might ever need hanging right there. I suspect the popularity of the fanny pack could be attributed to this convenience. I still clip a water bottle to a belt loop. It just feels right. And utility belts are cool.
