Divers are supposed to ascend 18 meters or less every minute and stop at 15 meters below the surface for 3-5 minutes before surfacing. This is so the body can adjust to the change in pressure. If done incorrectly, the person can get nitrogen bubbles in their blood. This is called "the bends" or Decompression Sickness (DCS).
