The sound of iron slicing into flesh echoed into Seth's ears as he swung his scythe into a vampire's chest. The pole in his hand shivered as the vampire's body convulsed upon impact and disappeared into powered dust, flying away in the wind.
Seth killed about ten of them so far and was just starting to enjoy himself when he remembered why he was still here. Swinging his scythe to shake off the residual dust, he carried it behind him like a bad omen, a low smile hanging on his mouth. "So, are you coming out? Or do I have to come in after you." He darkly asked the thing slithering in the corner.
The vampire scrambled to his feet, looking at Seth warily as though he wanted to run away. "Are you going to kill me too?"
Seth offered him a large smile that proved fatal to the vampire's remaining courage. "Now why would I do a thing like that to someone as upstanding as yourself?"
The vampire flinched. "Because," He said weakly. "You killed my brethren."
"They attacked me first." He countered coolly.
"They felt threatened." He said with a hard gaze.
"Good." Seth offered another smile, a gentler one that didn't seem to make any difference. "However, I'm not some grim reaper. I merely wanted some answers." He explained in a polite way.
"You killed ten of them." The vampire pointed out.
"And we can make that eleven if you're certain there's nothing you can tell me." He said sweetly in return.
The vampire glowered at him like he was the most foul thing on the planet.
Seth swung his scythe and took his head off in one fluid motion. His body and head turned into a pile of dust.
How annoying... Another group down that refused to answer. Vampires were such unsociable creatures.
Between a vampire and a werewolf, Seth would have rather asked the latter, but werewolves were harder to find, and fewer in numbers with pack members deserting their groups to form their own.
A beta becoming an alpha was a rare occurrence indeed, if someone were to ask him that a long time ago, but unfortunately, it was quite common these days. This also meant their power was far stronger than vampires. For example, if a vampire left their pack they'd be far less powerful on their own. They don't gain physical strength from leaving their pack, rather they lose it, becoming weaker without numbers to protect them. If a werewolf leaves a pack, they are promoted to an alpha if they have a follower, and gain a lot of power in the process.
Basically, a werewolf can become an alpha with just one follower, and since most werewolves were leaving their packs in numbers, finding a beta was not a hard thing to do. Vampires were also deserting their packs, but in contrast to werewolves, this simply made them easier prey.
Hence why Seth was shredding through them to find the answers he was searching for about the veil. Even a pack of ten vampires were easier to handle than a constant flow of werewolves with many alphas.
Suddenly he was attacked from behind with a set of claws piercing into his left side. They sharply dug under his ribcage before he could pull away.
Ah... did he speak too soon?
He grimaced at the pain but kept his cool to face them.
To his discontent, he realized many alphas were suddenly surrounding him. One, two, three, four, five... He could tell they were alphas because their presence was far more domineering than the ones lingering behind them.
Finding that he could no longer smile, he gripped the pole of his scythe tightly, preparing to fight them all at once if he had to.
Swinging his scythe in a large outstretched motion around him, he created a swift circle to drive them back enough that he could move freely. Retreating was an option but never part of the plan. He might as well use this opportunity to see if a werewolf has better knowledge that he could obtain. He dodged to the right, seeing a small opening between the weakest looking of the five alphas.
The werewolves he moved towards looked extremely angered by this action. After regaining their composure from the surprise, they struck tooth and nail at their pursuer, swinging wildly with the intent to kill.
Seth ducked just in time as a claw dove near his neck. He dodged to the right, using his scythe to propel him with faster velocity to avoid the foot that came crashing by his lowered knee. When he was certain there wasn't another moment to lose, from his crouched position, he swung low aiming at their legs in one flowing movement. The scythe tore through the flesh of three of the five werewolves present.
The three wounded alphas stumbled to the ground, unable to rise and join their brethren. However at the same moment, the betas rushed forward sensing their leaders were in immediate danger.
Seth used this opportunity of confusion to attack the betas. A smile fell upon his lips at the excitement that rose to his chest. He knew what their next move would be and planned accordingly.
Despite all their differences, werewolves were vastly different from vampires in particularly one major way. In the end, vampires simply worked to protect themselves.
But alphas would always protect their betas. Werewolves wore loyalty in the structure of their blood.
Gracefully he jumped into the air and slammed the end of his scythe into the head of the first beta that was closest to him.
The beta fell to the ground, crumbling like a piece of paper, but otherwise quite safe.
The two remaining alphas rushed forward this time. The one on the right was faster and released a low growl, anger flowing from his eyes.
Seth winked at him, taking a few steps back, a lightness in his step. When he was further away from the second alpha, he took the chance to slice the limbs off from the closest alpha that pursued him much faster. The limbs fell one after another, arms first, then legs, leaving the central body and head in one piece.
The four remaining betas cried at their losses and rushed forward in a final attempt to subdue their enemy.
Seth ran a little this time, knocking out the rest of the betas, leaving them immobile and alive on the ground. Just as quickly, he had also moved, preparing to snap the final alpha in half like a twig with the rear end of his scythe. The alpha's spine cracked from the impact and essentially folded in half, crumbling to the ground as well, but dead this time.
In his final movement, Seth swung the tip of his scythe near the throat of the alpha who lost all their limbs.
His eyes closed in defeat. "Thank you for sparing our young." The alpha spoke calmly as if he was at peace with his near death. His eyes opened again, this time filled with understanding. "I will tell you what you want to know."
Seth nodded, lowering his scythe.
"The rumor about someone that can open the veil is no longer just a rumor." The alpha looked up at the sky as if he could see the world beyond. "Vampires and werewolves alike have heard about the girl who can either set us free or remake the world." He continued seeing that Seth was listening closely. "A day ago, a vampire confirmed that she lives in this town. Spooksville is about to be the converging point for vampires and werewolves across the globe searching for this girl."
To Seth, it felt as though history was repeating itself, just under different circumstances. He closed his eyes briefly, memories of a long time ago flashing before his mind. Spooksville felt like his burial ground in many ways, but it was also his beloved home, full of precious moments spent with those he loved.
If Ivory was safe then Spooksville stood a chance at survival from being shrouded in chaos. He wouldn't leave this world yet before knowing his home lived on long after him. That included Ivory who deserved a normal life. She should have never been exposed to unnatural things like vampires, werewolves, or even himself. His hope was that she would still be able to find happiness beyond knowing of this other existence among human lives, but he knew she would never find peace.
Seeing the undead was not something a person could forget.
He looked down at the werewolf who's eyes were growing cloudy and dazed. His missing limbs were slowly bleeding out from the wounds and creating pools of blood beside him. "Sayonara, friend." Seth whispered to him in gratitude and gently took his life so he could have a quick death.
