Why so serious?

Have you noticed that people on historical paintings never smile. As it turned out I am not the only person on internet who wonders about the reasons behind. Apparently, wider smiles were “associated with madness, lewdness, loudness, drunkenness, all sorts of states of being that were not particularly decorous", as per art historian Angus Trumble. What an interesting idea?
