According to "How to be a Victorian" - a book on the domestic life in the 19th century in Britain by Ruth Goodman - there are two reasons why women at that time wear corsets. One is the general belief that women are too weak to support their body on their own. And the other reason is that corsets enable women to effortlessly sit upright, which is considered as a sign of good moral at that time.
The first reason is of course non-sense. The second one is, however, not entirely unappealing to me. I would love to look physically elegant and morally impeccable without having to invest any effort
