-Nova’s POV-
-That Night-
With a final push, we move the last shelf into place.
Breathing hard, I let out an exhausted “Finally done!”
After a full day of planning, shopping (I paid of course), lifting, and shoving, Amber and I finally moved and added enough stuff for me to have my own livable section of the flat. We chucked a simple modern-style bedframe in the back corner of the flat. To its left was a nice little metal side table with two levels, the lowest for any books and/or projects that I’m currently in the middle of, and the highest holding a wire-frame model of the sun that also served as a night light.
The desk I was using the previous night has been moved from the opposite corner to my new slice of Amber’s home, with a cast iron bookshelf to complement it.
After some deliberation, Amber and I decided to share her dresser, which she admitted was a bit oversized (according to her she ordered it with the wrong dimensions).
Done checking that everything was in order, I back up into my new bed frame and fall onto my back with a sigh. Amber lays on her back perpendicular to me, head resting on my stomach. My whole body suddenly feels just a bit warmer.
“Are you sleepy?” I whisper
“No, just need a second…”
“Ok.”
*Why is my heart beating faster? All she’s doing is resting her head on my stomach. Now that I think about it, I’ve been feeling odd all day. I… I must just be adjusting to a life with a non-relative, yeah, that’s all…*
My spiraling thoughts are eventually interrupted by a knock at the front door. Amber slowly gets up, suddenly making me feel a little colder again, and leaves the bedroom. Curious, I decide to follow her all the way to the front door and watch as she walks right up to the door and looks through the peephole. She visibly shudders and hurriedly indicates towards my aviators. Taking the hint, I scramble to pick them up off of my desk as Amber opens the door.
“Hey there!” Amber greets the visiting group with a hint of anxiety in her voice. I rush to her side and quickly assume a (hopefully) normal demeanor. Myla and Mimi are waiting out front, this time along with the rest of the group. Given how tall they are, Rin is easily the most immediately noticeable. They tower over the rest of us, dressed in a loose, uni-sex outfit.
Shooting me a hesitant glance, Amber invites everyone in.
Myla, closely followed by Nico, walks towards the couch, Nico looks back at me with his usual half-asleep expression “Oh, by the way, you’re moms are here too…”
“Wai- Huh?” I don’t get to say any more before a body of tougher build than mine slams into me, and by consequence, Amber. Before I even know what’s happening, I find myself clinging onto Amber for support, even further below her than normal. We stare into each other’s eyes, faces nearly touching. Disturbed, my glasses slip a little down the bridge of my nose. Amber’ slowly reaches and readjusts them.
Rin quietly cuts in “Uhhh… guys?”
Rins voice snaps us out of it. Around us, everyone is expressing either confusion and glee. Amber and I turn back to each other and quickly detach with a mixture of Um’s and Oh’s.
Rushing to find something to distract me, I look to see who ran into me, only to find my mothers, the expressions on their faces making me even more nervous than I already was. I should probably take this time to mention that these two are both my biological mothers. Their DNA was taken, spliced together, and placed in a artificial womb, resulting in me. Interestingly, my hair and pre-dynamochromia eye color seem to be a mutation, not showing up in either of my mothers’ ancestries.
“H-hey mom… what brings you guys here? Also, ow. Why?” I hesitantly ask, kind of already guessing the answer.
Sarah intensifies her glare “Well… someone didn’t call us after yeeting themselves out of fifth story window with rockets strapped to their back!”
Helena comes up behind Sarah and gently places a hand on her shoulder “We heard about it from your friends when they invited us to come with them.”
“O…oh, right. I thought I was forgetting something yesterday…”
Sarah calms down a little and crosses her arms. “While I get that you were having a fun date with Amber,-”
“Wha-!” Amber and I exclaim
“-you really need to remember to call people when something this interesting happens.”
“R-right… I’ll try to remember next time…”
“Next time!?!” Everyone stares at me like I just stepped on a landmine.
“Err…” I look away awkwardly “Um, what about everyone else?”
Mimi grabs a cushion and drops it down in front of the tv, grabbing a controller and booting up the console before sitting down. Looking around for something, Bee picks up another cushion and drops it off to Mimi’s side. Rin gracefully chooses the couch and replies “The rest of us came here to check up on you and Amber. Mimi also wanted to throw something of a… what was it?”
“A (temporary) home warming hangout!!” Mimi shouts, startling Bee a little.
“Yeah, that.”
Amber gives me a sideways glance “U-umm… well… thank you for checking on us.”
*Just about everyone I know is in the same room, If I mess up now…*
I try to calm my breath and force the best calm expression I can manage. Amber taps my shoulder.
“What now?” she whispers into my ear.
I shudder a little (much to my own confusion) and reply “Just relax and try to distract yourself from my dynamochromia. I did the same last time we all hung out.”
Nodding to me, Amber joins Rin and Nico on the couch. Considering my options for a second, I decide to sit with Mimi and Bee to enjoy some game time.
