Julie had said her piece and now it was my turn.
"Since we're confessing," I said, holding out my glass. "I'm also involved with someone and you kinda know HIM too."
Jules blinked at me in confusion for a second and then her mouth opened and closed a few times before she said, "It had better not be Lloyd Cassidy."
We both laughed despite the seemingly surreal conversation. The Scotch, a good laugh, it was Julie and I at our best, even though we were discussing our lives apart.
"I think Jason is going to kill me because... I'm dating his new violin teacher; Amir."
Neither of us had seen him standing there in his pajamas, ready to kiss us "goodnight" but he'd clearly heard more than he should've.
Jason stormed off to his room.
Fuck!
This was definitely not the way I wanted him to find out.
Fuck!
I ran after him, yelling to Julie that I needed to fix this by myself.
"Hey, buddy," I said, sitting on the edge of his bed. "Can we talk about this?"
Jason had his pillow pressed over his face and he responded with a muffled "no".
"Jason, I always meant to tell you about me... I just figured it would be best to wait until you were older."
"Huh?!" he demanded, removing the pillow.
"In this world, there are boys who like girls but also boys who like boys and..."
"Dad, I know all of that. I'm twelve, not stupid!" Jason said with a pout. "But why did it have to be Amir? He's such a great teacher, I really like him."
"I really like him too," I said, stupified at his response.
"Now, I'm never going to learn how to play Pirates better than Brent Mulligan."
I couldn't help but laugh.
"It's not funny!" Jason said, throwing the pillow at me.
"I'm just in awe of you, Jason," I said. "You find out that your father is in a relationship with another man and your only worry is that you'll lose your teacher."
"You mean I won't?" Jason asked, his eyes lighting up.
"Of course not, buddy! Amir and I would never let our involvement stop you from crushing Brent."
"Do you promise?" Jason asked, holding out his pinky. He always made me promise because I always kept my word.
"Promise," I said, pulling him in for a hug.
Julie was leaning against the doorframe smiling.
Was Amir right? Was there no coincidence? Was everything going as it was supposed to?
