4 Chapter 4
As the conversation unfolded, Aruno’s senses tingled with an unfamiliar energy. Within the confines of Rin’s dwelling, his Arcanum screen materialized, casting a subtle glow before him. The screen displayed intricate details of the mysterious system – pathways of growth, statistics, and a subtle indication of a potential to “ascend.”
“What… is this?”
Aruno muttered, his eyes fixed on the ethereal display.
Rin, noticing Aruno’s reaction, offered an insightful explanation.
“Ah, your Arcanum has awakened. It’s your interface to the system that governs our growth in this world. A guide to your potential.”
Aruno, intrigued yet perplexed, navigated through the screen, glancing at the options it presented. The “ascend” system, with its arcane symbols, hinted at untapped power waiting to be unlocked.
Their focus shifted back to the enigmatic conversation between Ko and Yoru, their banter echoing in the room.
“Yoru Kurai, such a mysterious woman. You knew I was a vampire hunter, yet you play the enigma card.”
Yoru, her eyes reflecting a playful challenge, responded in kind.
“Information is a valuable currency, Ko. Keeps the dynamics interesting.”
Ko shot back with a his one of his smart-ass responses.
“Well, aren’t we the cryptic one? You hiding secrets or just enjoying the thrill of the unknown?”
“Ko, your arrogance precedes you. Maybe in another world, a charming smirk and a set of dual knives impress, but here, you’re just another pawn in a grander game.”
Ko, never one to back down from a challenge, shot back with a smug grin.
“Charming and deadly, that’s the Ko Amari special. You’ll learn to appreciate it, Yoru.”
The teasing banter escalated, their verbal jabs akin to a sparring match of wits. Amidst the back-and-forth, Ko, caught in the currents of playful provocation, couldn’t resist the temptation to make a move. In a swift motion, he lunged at Yoru, aiming to catch her off guard.
Yet, to his surprise, Yoru effortlessly sidestepped his assault, the grace in her movements almost taunting him. Even in the midst of the lunge, Yoru continued her teasing, her words echoing with playful mockery.
“Is that all, Ko? I expected more finesse from a renowned vampire hunter. You might need to work on your approach.”
Ko, recovering from the missed strike, couldn’t help but appreciate the calculated elegance in Yoru’s maneuvers. Their banter, now intertwined with a physical dynamic, took an unexpected turn. Yoru, standing over Ko with a playful yet enigmatic expression, delivered her verdict.
“Faster, Ko. In our realm of chaos, speed isn’t just an asset—it’s a requirement. Perhaps a bit more swiftness in both words and actions would serve you well.”
Rin, growing exasperated, intervening.
“Will you two focus? We’re dealing with unprecedented portal openings and demonic intrusions. Save the theatrics for later.”
Aruno, seizing the opportunity to steer the conversation, turned to Rin with a lingering curiosity.
“Rin, I’ve been meaning to ask. Are you a vampire too? And in this world, are vampires considered… normal?”
Rin, considering his questions, replied with a measured tone.
“Yes, I’m a vampire. As for being ‘normal,’ it’s a complex question. In our world, vampires are part of everyday life. Here, though, it seems we’re more of an anomaly.”
Yoru, with her characteristic smugness, couldn’t resist adding a teasing remark.
“Normal or not, it’s not every day you see us vampires hanging out like old friends with humans.”
Ko, not one to be outdone, retorted with a smirk.
“I’ve got better things to do than socialize with bloodsuckers. But here we are, stuck together in this mess.”
“Go ahead Ko, no one is keeping you here. Please go out there to who knows what.”
“Oh shut up, I’m sure it’s not that bad out there.”
Rin, sensing the potential for bickering, interjected with a stern tone.
“Enough banter, both of you. Please! We have more pressing matters to focus on. The portals and demons are still a mystery, and we need to find answers.”
Aruno, steering the conversation back to him.
“Rin, you mentioned earlier that vampires in this world are considered an anomaly. Does that mean they’re not fully accepted?”
Rin giving Aruno a nod.
“That’s correct. While vampires are part of everyday life, acceptance is a different story. Many people are wary of the supernatural, and prejudices still exist.”
Aruno, mulling over this information, continued with another question.
“And what about half-humans, like me? Is that a common occurrence here?”
Rin, contemplating the complexity of Aruno’s nature, responding.
“Half-humans are rare, much like vampires. It’s not something you’d find commonly in the ordinary spectrum of this world.”
