“Luana, one way or another, our ghost streak will end today. We need to move on.” I said, inching towards the server.
"Karlo, you don't think I can tell that you've been distant? You never want to hangout for long anymore, our plans to go places always fall through. You have felt so cold recently. When did you start to hate me? Why do you want to end our streak so bad?! We have such a wonderful friendship and I feel if our streak ends, so will our friendship, because it’s the only thing I have to keep you around. The streak has to go on, so I don't lose you!"
"I'm sorry you feel that way, but it has to end today. Truth is Luana, I want you out of my life. Ever since we officially split, you haven’t changed, but I have. You’re in love with a person who doesn’t exist anymore.” I said, lowering my hands. “after all, you just want attention; you don’t want my heart. Maybe you just hate the thought of me with someone new. But you're just making sure I never get over you. So we need to end our relationship today.”
“But that doesn’t mean you have to cut me off. You’re making it sound like it never happened, and that we were nothing. I don’t even need your love, but you’re treating me like a stranger and that just feels so rough.” Luana said. She conjured up a tissue and blew her nose. Then lit the dirty tissue on fire, letting the ashes fall to the ground. “You didn’t have to stoop so low by having your friend Tom collect your things and then change your number.”
“But you don’t even need that, now that you're just somebody that I used to know.”
“What are you saying, Karlo? You still know me! Don’t you remember all those great times we had!” Luana wiped tears from her eyes, “Remember when I made you those weed brownies and I snuck in some molly? Then you thought you were a part of a nudist cult and started running down the street naked while it snowed?”
“Why did you think that would be the memory to get me back? On second thought, don’t answer that, it won’t change anything,” I said, pinching my nose. I looked back at her and continued, “Yes, I will admit we had great memories, and I will always remember the good times we had. But that doesn't replace all the terrible things you’ve done to me. It's time we go our separate ways.”
Luana burst into tears and fell to her knees. "But Karlo, I don’t want you to go away! The streak is the only thing that keeps you around. Everyone knows if you stop doing a common interest with someone, the relationship is doomed.” Luana said, wiping the tears from her eyes. “I can change. I’ll be a better person!"
"No, we've known each other for 15 years. You are the same person when we were 11 as you are now. I still care and want the best for you, but I have to do it at a cruise ship's length. The streak ends today, Luana." I said, seeing this as my only chance. I slowed her perception of time by 5 seconds and then ran to the server.
Luana noticed her time being slowed, and she broke out of it. But it worked just enough for me to get in front of the server. “No, our streak will never end!” Luana said, sending a pair of handcuffs in my direction.
She was too late; I emptied my pistol into the server, turning it into Swiss cheese before Luana’s cuffs shackled themselves on my ankles. Now off balance, I stuck my hand out in front of me to stop my fall. But a handcuff caught my wrist, the handcuff wrapped itself around my free hand, immobilizing me. And I crashed to the ground on my side. I rolled myself to my back, and I was now staring at the ceiling.
Luana stood over me. Her hair rekindled into flames, and she relit the fire in her pupils. She screamed and launched verbal missiles at me, or that’s what I thought. I wasn’t paying attention to anything she was saying anymore.
I smiled. There was simply one thing on my mind.
There’s nothing else she can do; our streak has ended and so has our connection.
I’m free.
