where we left off: “Well geez. I guess we’ll just have to go out the front door,” she teased before suddenly pushing Aiva into the shadow created by an archway. A finger to her lips. Continued...
Aiva followed her gaze down the corridor where an imposing figure had appeared. A Richard stepped from around the corner. His eyes swept the area like a searchlight. The two of them held their breath until the lumbering man moved on. Her pulse sounded loud in her ears as Mabry let out a breathless giggle.
“Now’s our chance!”
Aiva once again found herself pulled along. Both laughter and uncertainties left in their wake.
“Hurry! Hurry!”
They burst through the front door and gasped in the fresh air. Mabry skipped ahead. They passed the circle drive and the elaborate marble fountain. Their images reflected in the shimmering surface of the ever flower water for a brief moment before scattering in ripples.
Aiva’s breath wheezed and she tried to keep as quiet as she could before Mabry noticed. She fumbled her inhaler out of her front pocket as they dashed down the driveway. The girls slowed their pace as they neared the front gates.
This was the last obstacle between them and freedom. She wasn’t sure how they were going to get past the two Richards who guarded the electronic entrance. As they drew closer her heart slowed. Aiva knew this was the end of the line.
