The two of them walked in companionable silence towards the town. Once there, Luke got Hallie and the baby settled in an abandoned shed outside of town, while he went into town to send out the message.
The baby dragon hadn’t cried once during the entire journey. It simply relaxed contentedly in Hallie’s arms as they traveled. As much as she would love to keep the little creature, she didn’t know how to communicate with it and it would be incredibly difficult to sneak a baby dragon everywhere they had to go. The best option would be to give the dragon up, no matter how cute she was. After a quick feed, Hallie settled the dragon down in the straw next to her and laid down to go to sleep. It had been almost a full day since she had slept last and traveling left her exhausted.
Luke walked through the town making sure to blend in with the locals as much as possible. He kept his head down and walked at the same pace as the rest of the people on the street. He quickly headed down to the message center. Once there, he used his magic at one of the kiosks to quickly send a message to his aunt and cousin back home. He planned to wait at least until he had gotten word that they received his message. Thankfully his aunt replied quickly.
“Honey, what has happened? Some guards came saying that if you contacted us we would need to let them know. You guys have caused a bit of trouble at the capital and the borders now have more patrol guards than normal. Also, what do you mean by a baby dragon?” Catherine said as her voice rose in concern.
“They tried to kill Hallie to find out more about her magic. She’s special, Aunt Cathy. She can do things that no one else could ever do. We had to escape after they tried to throw us both down into the dungeon. We made it out though and are now resting up at a nearby town. We found a dragon baby. Apparently its mother had been murdered, so we are taking care of it. I was hoping that you might be able to help us.”
“Sorry, Hun. As much as I would love to, there is no way that we can leave the city. Guards follow us to work and back home every day. They are not letting us travel outside the border. You shouldn’t travel here either. They know that your family is here. Keep traveling and go as far from the capital as you can. It will buy you guys enough time to train your magic. I had a vision about you two and this is only the beginning of your journey together. Warlen isn’t going to stop hunting you guys down. He has had a taste of the power and he isn’t going to give up the possibility of more without fighting.”
“Okay, Auntie Cathy. I should probably go.”
“Alright honey, you be careful. And, teach Hallie what you know. You never know when it’ll come in handy. I expect to see both of you at my restaurant for a celebration when this is settled.”
Luke left the message center feeling more relieved than he had in days. Cathy had seen a vision of him and Hallie making it out of this mess. That was enough to brighten his spirits until he remembered that they still had a baby dragon to deal with. He decided to stop in a local store to top up their food supplies. After purchasing a few items, he continued on his way to the abandoned shack where he left Hallie, as the sun began to set. He made it to the shack just before the sun completely set to find Hallie and the dragon curled up together in the hay. Luke divided the food amongst their packs and settled down in his place in the hay. He fell asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow.
