Aether Candelions: Divine Saga

Chapter 12. The turning of the hourglass, part one

Chapter 12. The turning of the hourglass, part one

Jan 31, 2024

In the background, the soft sound of owls could be heard, along with the rustling of trees. The leaves seemed to join hands, creating the usual peaceful atmosphere of the place. A tinkling sound of water, like a light rain, was also audible.

However, it was getting dark, and the stars insisted on appearing. Just like the waning moon that demanded attention, even though it was faint. Its silvery light illuminated the stained glass of the grand architecture. The figures in the colorful glass depicted battles and warriors, dressed in various armors. Among them, a woman dressed like the sun radiated her splendor with omnipotent force.

There were five bridges around the Dome. On one of them, two people were conversing, facing each other, engaged in serious dialogue. Above them, a decorative and eye-catching panel displayed an advertisement. A charming girl with red hair smiled in luminous tones. The reflection of that color reached the two people on the bridge.

The rosy skin of Dawn was touched by the orange glow of the advertisement. A gust of wind lifted a few strands of her short, brown hair. Her eyes, like natural topazes, with well-defined eyebrows, were slightly furrowed, as was the cupid's bow of her mouth.

Then, she looked at the boy in front of her, saying:

"Why are you asking this of me?" Her eyes were as serene as usual.

Elio lowered his head slightly, adjusting the backpack on his shoulders. His perfectly sculpted jaw was directed at his feet. Then he looked back at her.

"Right now, the others are out..." he said a bit hesitantly, running his hand over his nose. "To be honest, I don't think I could ask this of anyone else. I know you're trustworthy, not that Randall or Corvus aren't, but... I believe you'll handle this in the best way. Until I return, of course."

Dawn brushed her hair from her face, sighing. She started to smooth one of the rings on her fingers. Elio watched her attentively, his gray eyes motionless.

"Alright. I'll talk to Officer Kess."

The boy smiled at her naturally.

"Thank you so much."

"However," she said quickly. Elio blinked. "Do something for me, in return."

Their gazes exchanged. The empty bridge seemed even larger to them. The boy remained silent, waiting.

"I want you to fulfill the request I made when we first spoke, years ago. The request you refused."

Elio moistened his lips, almost embarrassed.

"You should know something," continued Dawn. "That day, I wasn't upset or held any grudges. On the contrary, I tried to understand you. And I also waited for my chance. So, if you still remember what I asked of you…"

"I remember," he said, nodding confidently.

"In that case, I ask for the second time. Find my cousin in your world and bring me news of her."

Elio scratched the back of his head, affirming.

"I guess that's the least I can do right now. Alright. In that case, I promise to find her, Dawn."

The girl shivered slightly, observing him.

"When I return, we should..." he said, thoughtful. His ears red. She raised an eyebrow. "We should work together."

"I don't know," she commented, lifting a cheek. "My opinion is that we are on opposite sides. I don't think I could walk among your friends."

Elio seemed uncomfortable, wanting to say more.

"I know Agis can be..."

"You should go," she interrupted. "You wouldn't want to be late."

When he absorbed her words, he stepped back, nodding his head and moving his gray gaze gently.

Dawn, however, hadn't noticed that.

"I won't be late. It's just a few hours difference, you know?"

The girl didn't respond. Elio walked past her and headed towards the staircase. Left alone, she watched him disappear into the distance, reaching the top of the stairs and walking towards the Dome.

She turned her body completely, resting her arms on the bridge railing. She ended up holding the cord around her neck. There were four rings on the chain, each with distinct symbols etched on them. Dawn let her gaze fall to the courtyard below, observing the extensive fountain.

Why do I feel like something suspicious is happening? She thought for a moment, closing her eyelids and then opening them again. Even Elio's request... Orishi, you shouldn't have left Candelion right now. Did I act at the right time?

Her light brown irises were subdued that night. The weak movement in the Dome was almost lonely. However, she preferred to stay away from everything at that moment. With a harder expression, she thought about Elio's request.

Soon, she remembered something.

"Right," she said aloud, shrugging her shoulders. "I need to tell him that."

Dawn hurriedly walked, climbing step by step towards the entrance of the Dome. She had to exert extra effort to push the twelve-meter-high door. The creaking sound awakened someone inside.

Li Wildpetal woke up startled when he heard the sound of footsteps.

"I wasn't sleeping!" His small eyes behind the large lenses moved embarrassedly. His glasses were askew on his face, and his curly hair was tousled. When he realized it was Dawn, he calmed down. "Miss Dawn, it's you."

"Has Elio already left?" she asked, glancing around the center of the Dome.

"Oh, did Elio come here?" Li got up from behind the desk, disoriented.

He adjusted his outfit, a uniform made of sturdy leather. A small emblem decorated the right side of the garment. It was engraved with sunbeams and two intertwined swords.

The Dome guarded something precious. It was the object Dawn was examining at the moment. In the center of the place, an hourglass hovered in the air. It performed a rotational movement. Around the object, a transparent ring created a barrier marking a limit.

"Ah, he must have left without waking me up," concluded Li, blinking embarrassedly. "I don't think it was long ago. The hourglass is finishing its rotation now."

Dawn just nodded.

"Miss?" Li called her. "Could you not mention my little nap to Mr. Corvus?"

"Don't worry about that," she replied with a friendly smile. "But be careful, someone might ente…" Her sentence died halfway. "What's that?"

She moved her body, her head turned towards the hourglass in the center. Li also followed it with his gaze. The object trembled within the limit until it reached the point of rotation. The man beside her adjusted his glasses on his face, surprised.

"Did you see that too, miss?" Dawn didn't answer him immediately. "How? Why did the hourglass rotate if nobody crossed?"

The woman straightened her back, putting one foot in front of the other towards the marked boundary. She crossed the protective barrier, stopping near the floating object.

"Miss Dawn, no! You know you can't cross the barrier!"

However, she didn't heed his warning. She turned one of her rings, displaying its symbol. A small globe formed on top. Two tiny points showed up very quickly. From Dawn's worried face, it was not a good sign.

"Miss…"

"Summon Randall through the astro," she instructed.

"What?"

"Tell him to come here with the mage Talra. Just the two of them, Li. No one else."
