There was once a world without light, ruth it was called. For years and years, the world was enveloped in complete darkness until a glowing seed from the heavens above fell onto the ground. The glowing seed took care of itself until matured.
One day, the ruth from the tree fell onto the land and buried itself in the warmth of the earth. As the seed grew, it developed legs and pulled itself out of the earth. This seed was called Vyr.
Vyr drank the water from the tree and breathed the air around. Vyr took care of the tree and created life as the tree had created him. He buried some of the ruth onto the warm land like the tree had whispered to him. He let some of them grow in water and cast others into the sky.
On a day he was not at the watch, man grown from earth created light of his own. The light did not glow magnificently like the trees, and Vyr feared it.
The tree told Vyr to throw some of its ruth from its branches onto the foreign light. To Vyr's surprise, in the ashes of the light grew a new kind of man.
The first man was called Solum by the tree for he grew from the soil cultivated by Vyr. The second man was named Unda, for she grew from the ripples of water Vyr collected. The third man was Anima, who grew from the breath of Vyr. The last man was named Ignis for he grew from the embers Vyr stoked.
Centuries later, the story of man coming from the tree is still regarded with great reverence. Living far from the Lighting Tree has not caused man to waver. Even now, they still believe greatly that they are born from the magnificent tree that creates ruth, the light of their life.
However, man does not live so close to the sacred tree for fear of hurting it. Instead, man lived in a Giant Tree that the Lighting Tree gave to them. Though Vyr was not with them, man understood that Vyr was an extension of the tree and would never harm it.
At the highest point lived the descendants of Anima, who loved the wind. Below and within the trunks of the trees lived the descendants of Solum. The descendants of Unda remained very close to the waters while the descendants of Ignis lived on a series of islands off on the other side of the river from the Giant Tree.
Year 530 - 007
In the current world, each seventh year, man is privileged to give back to the Lighting Tree. To man, this is an honor and a duty they willingly fulfill. To be the Seed of the tree was the greatest honor man could ever receive.
Being chosen was like drawing lots. Amongst the thousands of people living in the Giant Tree, during the blackest day of the seventh year, one man is chosen by the Lighting Tree. This particular year was the beginning of a new cycle beginning once again with Solum, the first man. In the land of Solum, warriors born from the ground always started a new cycle. This year would be the 18th cycle in the record.
A boy at the age of 19 was chosen this year. His name was Zhen the Warrior.
The Lighting Tree calls for one special person every 7 years to journey through the Abyss with four trusted companions. Additionally, Zhen must give up his human desires and connections to fulfill the calling. However, what happens when his connections can't give him up?
