"Is everything alright?", the man asked in that same nonchalant voice as always.
He wasn't sure when it started, but he was afraid of the man in front of him, even though he never did anything that deemed him as dangerous. That voice of his, that always told him what to do in such a sweet tone, as if he were talking to one of his favourite people and honestly he'd believe it if it wasn't for those unfeeling eyes of his.
"Sir?"
"Ah, nothing. I'm feeling great thank you for asking and what about you? I heard you didn't succeed in fullfilling the task I gave you", he said trying to look calm.
"Whoever gave you that information was wrong, your task was actually not too far off my original goal so I didn't have any trouble while completing it", the man said looking at him.
"So it seems", he answered with cold sweat running down his back. He had lost this game the moment he let himself be influenced by the man, those caring words that made him melt were just a mean to achieve his goal and by the time he realised that it was already too late to turn back.
~I need to get out of here, that man is mad. I didn't think he would be able to kill someone from the upper council, they were supposed to be the elite of the elite!~
"Honestly I'm quite disappointed, I thought the councils were stronger than this. Back then they were able to bring the whole world down on it's knees, but I guess now that she isn't here anymore to help them everything is bound to crumble... Well that's too bad, I was planning on surprising her by bringing all of them to her while they're still alive, but it looks like that won't be possible", his expression changed as he said the last sentence. He was grinning at him, the same way he did when they met, while he was killing someone.
Seeing this he tried running away, but it was too late. There was no one to save him now.
Hearing a muffled scream from inside one of the servants was about to ask wether everything was alright in there, but at that moment his master opened the door. His hands were covered in blood, which had also gotten all over his clothes and face. Without saying anything he walked away wiping of the blood from his hands and his face.
While he was walking down the hall none of the servants dared to look at him and so the unfamiliar expression on their master's face went by unnoticed.
After that the servant that was at the door went back to his work, but he couldn't stop thinking about what had happened and so he decided to look into the room, to see what it was all about. By the time he was able to set off the alarm the intruder had already left the mansion and all that was left behind was the dead body of yet another council member.
"Did you hear what happened?"
"Yeah, I did. Who could've done something like this?"
"It was probably ..."
"The coffee shop is quiet busy today", commented Leila, who just came inside.
"Many people are coming here around this time of the year, because they're visiting family", explained Jasmine while preparing yet another order.
"I thought most of the people here came together with their families", said Leila surprised.
"Some of the people here did indeed come with their families, but the majority of this district consists out of the elderly, who can't take care of themselves anymore."
"But from what I've seen most of the people here are rather young and don't seem to have any family here either, is that only the case in this small part?", asked Leila now curious.
Jasmine seemed to hesitate and think about an appropriate way to formulate her answer, as to not offend anyone.
"Well, you see, this district was build for people who aren't able to do things the way normal people do them."
"If they aren't able to do things without the help of others wouldn't it be better to let them stay with their families?", she asked, but after seeing the others faces she wasn't sure anymore wether she truly wanted to hear the answer.
"You see it's not very easy to take care of others and yourself at the same time and when you're not able to do anything without worrying about someone else, because they aren't able to do the most basic things, you have to make a difficult decision. You need to decide wether you want to continue this stressing lifestyle or send them away to a place where they get the care they need, with the price being you can only visit them at given times."
"But from what I heard most of the people don't have a choice and just get brought to another place far away from their family without any kind of consent fromt their care takers", said Leila.
"That is only the case when it's deemed they don't have any use or whatsoever to society and will just be a burden to everybody else."
"That's not up to anyone to decide", she said quietly, so that no one was able to hear her.
She didn't find it fair that people where treated this way just because they had some problems. Nor was it fair that they were deemed to not have any use to society just because they weren't able to do things the way other people were able to. If their society was really build like this, then what was the point in having it?
Now that she thought about it she realised that it had always been like this, the only reason she wasn't aware of it before, was because she herself was born to a high class family and so no one dared to speak around her in a manner like this. Looking back at all the hints there were she was angry at herself, but also at everyone else who was hiding the truth from her.
"This is unfair", she said in a shaky voice.
"What is?", asked Cesar who was cleaning the tables.
"All of this. The way people are treated because of things they can't even control!"
"It has always been like this there's no changing it", meant Jasmine smiling at her in an attempt to calm her down. But that didn't help at all, seeing that everybody was looking at her she realised that she went too far. There was no use at yelling at other people that were in an even worse situation than hers, no matter how angry she was.
Even then she didn't want to leave it at this and so she started to ask more questions about their situation. Maybe she would be able to convince her father to help them!
Seeing her determined expression they decided to answer her question at the best of their abilities. After all it wasn't everyday that someone cared this much about them and the situation they were in.
The only one who didn't participate in the discussion was Marianne. After hearing what Leila had to say she remembered something, it was an old memory. It was so old that she had already forgotten all about it, but at the same time it was still as fresh, as if it had only been yesterday.
By the time Leila ran out of questions it was already the late evening and they were about to close up, when they saw someone entering the coffee shop.
"We're sorry, but we're closing now, sir", said Jasmine who came up to him.
"No worries, I was here to pick up my little sister", said the stranger.
Hearing this everybody turned their heads, looking at Leila, who was the only person that was still left other than the staff. Seeing that everything went quiet she looked up from the plate full of cookies and saw that everybody was looking at her. The man just sighed and shook his head, while Leila got up after taking another handfull of cookies.
After both the siblings said their goodbyes they went outside and made their way home, were a surprise awaited them.
After years of being isolated from everyone Silas finally escapes. But now that he's free he doesn't know what to do and his pursuers are starting to close in. Will he be able to fully escape or will he lose everything while trying, even his own life?
"Who are you?", asks the confused and scared voice.
The dark being in front of him smiles at him with that horrendous smile, that he despises more than anything else.
"Can't you see it? I am you."
