"Master...?" Rain questioned in a quiet whisper, hesitant to ask what had caused his sudden unease. Before she was given an answer, the grip on her hand tightened. Caught off guard, Rain was unprepared as she was pulled forward, her Master making a dash towards the bridge with her body in tow. She stumbled off balance, nearly falling to the ground. With his solid strength, his arm kept her upright and moving. What had he sensed?
Keeping by his side, they began to cross the bridge—their feet making no sound against the stone as they ran. They were swift, their bodies passing like shadows in what seemed to be a night void of all life. It didn't seem to occur to Rain that there wasn't a human in sight. Putting undoubted faith in her creator, she felt they would escape with nothing to fear. But in a world of war, nothing is as it seemed and no matter how silent they were, it wasn't enough.
Halfway across the bridge, her Master froze in mid step. His arm caught her by surprise as it wrapped around her waist before she could take another step. Pulling her in close to his chest, he brought his cloak around Rain as to hide her body from the world. A sharp gasp of surprise escaped her as her Master's vice-like hold locked her small frame against him. Clutching the front of his robes, Rain shut her eyes, holding in her breath as to not make a sound. He sniffed the night air again and Rain listened closely to the quick breaths resonating in his lungs. After a moment, his breath stopped.
"We have been found." He said in a voice that made the hair on the back of Rain's neck stand on end. Without warning, strong lights from either side of the river suddenly came to life, flooding the night and blinding his vision. His body tensed in alarm. He couldn't help but step back with Rain locked against him. There was no where to run.
