William packed all that he considered important into one medium-sized box. In it, he laid some hardcover books with titles written in foreign languages, a black metal case, a pen, a pocket watch, a deck of cards, a wallet, a phone charger and a small book that was attached to a chain. He handed the box to one of Daniels bodyguards and left.
As they left the apartment, Daniel turned to William and asked.
"Is that all? What about the safe?"
"What about it?" William asked.
"It is full of stolen valuables, isn't it? Aren't you going to take it with you?" he asked William.
"I have no need to." William said.
Williams's response confused Daniel.
"Then why steal it?"
"Because I could." William stated a bit matter of factually.
As they left the apartment William placed his hand on the door and muttered something. Suddenly the whole apartment glowed a smooth yellow, fading almost as soon as it appeared. It felt like something was missing from the apartment, as if something had faded with the light. But everything was just like before the light.
Walking down the apartment complex stairs they arrived at the parking lot where a black car, something similar to a small limousine, stood waiting for them.
Oh well, this is really inconspicuous. William thought to himself.
As they got in the car and headed out, William fidgeted with his lighter.
"So, the mighty Daniel Foster has stepped down from the ISC to teach?" William asked.
Daniel looked at him, annoyed.
"I would say more of an indefinite vacation. I wanted some time off and when I heard my grandfather had left the school to me in his will, I took it as an excuse." Daniel said, leaning back against the leather seats.
"All those hours in the same office listening to the same briefing over again got on me I suppose" Daniel explained, reaching for a bottle of water that laid in an ice bucket in the middle of the limousine.
"So, you traded one office for another?" William asked.
"I traded it for an office where I have control." Daniel corrected him.
"Fair enough." William said.
The car road out from the compact housing complexes and muddy streets to the highway. The car road quietly, as if it was just another gust of wind flowing in this dark night. When they drove into a tunnel, they slowed down and turned closer to the wall before they went completely into it.
Instead of the car crashing into the wall at high speeds, it went through it. Facing through it like if it was just an illusion.
"Corridor." the driver announced.
Before he drove into another lane that led into a wide open door. Passing through it, they were surrounded by complete darkness with winding roads floating around in the background. There were other cars driving on these other roads that flew off into the open void.
Eventually, after a few sharp turns they were met with a blinding light. The light vanished and they were outside again. Driving out of a forested road, they drove through open fields before stopping next to a tree stump.
As William stepped out of the limousine, he was greeted by a smell that could only be described as coffee, cheese, wet grass and perfume all at once.
"Ah, France." William said as he stepped out of the car.
A trip that would have taken over a day to drive they had traveled in under ten minutes.
At the edge of France by the shore is where they had parked. The sounds of the ocean waves echoed over the French planes. As William and Daniel stepped out into the open plains, the car drove off disappearing into the woodland.
"They will be sending your belongings to school, where you will have a room prepared for you." Daniel told William.
"Oh great. It will just be like going back into the college dorms again. How fun." William sarcastically commented.
Ignoring his comment, Daniel marched over to a lone tree stub. William followed in pursuit and when they arrived, they both knocked on the stub with their heels.
"A ram sam sam a ram sam sam." They sang.
Then the stub sank, and a hole took its place.
Without any hesitation William jumped into it, Daniel followed.
The hole twisted and spun and eventually ended and out they flew landing on a big blown up mattress.
"I take it you have been here before." Daniel said to William.
"I have been almost everywhere." William replied.
The tunnel had taken them to an underground district. In it stood wooden cabins and shacks containing maps and clothes. The whole place was built for the purpose of using the corridors, containing clothes and maps for almost any destination the corridors might take you, with the corridors entrance standing tall in the middle of the district.
The two walked up to the gate and looked upon an old map describing what path to take to what destination.
"Forward, second left, down, right." Daniel muttered out loud as he read the map.
"Wait, your school is located on the island of Nostradamus? The criminal paradise?" William asked, confused over the school’s location.
"Indeed, but it's not much of the criminal haven it was years ago. I guess that’s one thing we can thank Wolfgang for." Daniel replied.
Opening the gate showed an empty space with paths leading into the darkness of the void. The two walked in and closed the gate behind them.
The corridors are a "space between spaces." as quoted by an unknown sage of the past. It's a tool sages created after the voids discovery. Sages then utilized these never ending corridors to travel between places at quicker speeds.
The two walked in this endless void, turning where they had to, and eventually reaching another door. Opening it they were greeted by loud music, people drinking and dancing.
Walking past all that one could see the old-styled buildings basically being built on top of each other. Yet having just enough room to have your own private area. In the horizon a giant building stood tall. it stood in the middle of the island, being the Islands main attraction. It was built like an old medieval castle or church. With stone carved into different shapes that curl their way up. Floods of students walking in and out of the school’s main gate.
"You said you inherited this?" William asked.
"Yes. Apparently my great, great something grandpa was the founder of this school, and he declared that it would go down every generation being seen as a safe haven for any sage no matter what they have done. Everyone should be able to learn. That was his motto when he founded it." Daniel explained.
They walked up a stone pathway that led straight to the school. When they reached the gate, William saw some students look at them with weird looks.
"Isn't that our new principal?" One whispered.
"But who is the homeless man next to him?" Another asked.
"Maybe a new student?" A third one suggested.
"Hopefully not a teacher." A fourth one begged.
Brats! William thought.
Whilst Daniel seemed to enjoy the situation more than William, as he was well known, dressed and talented. Whilst William, stank of cigarette smoke and looked like he hadn't slept in weeks.
As they entered the school even more curious students of varying ages.
The interior of the school still had some of the charm the exterior had, with a hint of the old architecture standing out with the more modern inside. Stairs that lead to god knows how many floors, Screens that displayed today's lunch and what classes were starting as well as where they would be held. William followed Daniel closely behind, not wanting to be lost in the sea of people. However, it wasn't just the floor that was crowded, the sky was too. In the air, their students flew or jumped around hurrying to their next class.
"I got to say, this is quite the school you have gotten your hands on." William said impressed.
"By the way. What age range am I going to be teaching? Because if it's anything like the brats outside then I might have to turn this offer down." William said, still annoyed about them calling him homeless.
"Oh don’t worry. You will be handling the ones closer to your age, 18-20. That is the age range of your students." Daniel told him.
"As you might suspect we have a bit of a different way of doing classes. You will be assigned the same class for all the subjects you will be teaching, if there aren't others interested in learning what you teach. You will be assigned a class of born sages and recently discovered sages." Daniel explained.
The two walked through the crowd into a hallway labeled, teacher dorms.
"So are the other teachers also living here?" William asked.
"Not everyone, most of our teachers live outside the school on the island. However, there are some who live here, me included. This was also the best place for residence I could think of for you. It's free since it comes with the job, and you will be protected by the school’s barrier from whoever is looking for you." Daniel said.
"Protective barrier? How good is it?" William asks.
"Good enough that it could make the ISC struggle." Daniel said, causing a wide smile on William's face.
They eventually reached a brown door with a green tint, on it hung a metal plaque labeled "William."
"Well, here we are. Your class begins at 8:00 tomorrow morning. Since it will basically just be a start up class you won't have to prepare as much. Mostly tell them about Yade and the basics. However, if you want to prepare here is something that might help." Daniel said handing him a thick blue book labeled study plan.
"Welcome to Elisium William." Daniel told him as he handed him the key to his room.
