He stared into her eyes one last time before pushing her over the railing's edge as another gunshot was fired. Rain felt herself suddenly grow weightless. Grasping for her Master, his figure distanced from her against her will. She was unable to grab hold of him as she fell over the side of the bridge, plummeting to the icy black waters below. She screamed, unable to protest quickly enough before she hit the water and time returned to normal. Stunned for a moment and surrounded by an all consuming black, her mind went blank as she floated beneath the water. The rushing sound of the current went unnoticed. It wasn't until she tried to take a breath that she began to choke on a mouthful of water, her thoughts snapped back to reality.
Thrashing upwards, Rain searched for air. Breaking the surface of the river, she looked around hysterically for her Master as her long black hair stuck to her white face and hindered her view.
"Master!!" She screamed, trying as hard as she could to fight against the current that threatened to drag her under again. All that could be heard were the sounds of gunshots and sirens. No longer could she hear her Master's voice clear in her mind. It was muddled amongst the rushing sound of the water in her ears. As Rain thrashed upwards, another shot split the air. It fell short of its target as it pierced the water next to her head. With all her strength, she fought the movement of the water. Breaking free of the current, she managed to pull herself to a grassy bank farther down river.
Clawing her way up the side of the river bank, she slipped again and again due to the weight of her drenched clothes. Casting a glance back towards the bridge, Rain nearly fell back into the water in fear when she saw several soldiers running along the road side of the river towards her.
Run...
She had no time to question. Scrambling up the river bank to a road, Rain began to run. Like a shadow of wet ink from the bank to a road, the half-vampire dashed across them and into the darkness of an alley before the soldiers could reach her. By the time they reached the alley's entrance that led into the black, Rain was no where to be seen. One after another with their guns drawn and ready, they raced forward in pursuit of the girl. They were so focused on their fleeting prey that they had no idea that the half vampire girl was right before their eyes. Huddling against the stone wall of the alley, her figure had melted into the shadows and one by one the soldiers passed her, taking no notice.
After a few minutes, when their voices faded in the distance, Rain's shaking knees slowly gave way beneath her. Sinking downwards to the ground, Rain didn't move from her place. She was safe for the time being, but everything was overwhelming. Despite being alone, she couldn't find the courage to push away from the cold wall.
Her clothes had created a puddle beneath her feet. She reached out mentally to the connection that she and her Master shared, hope burning anxiously in her heart. She felt something, but it was distant and weakening with each passing second.
They had been separated. For the first time in her existence, she was alone.
Clenching her fists, Rain fought back the urge to cry. No, she wouldn't cry. Shaking her head as she shut her eyes, she bit her trembling lip. She would find him, even if it meant ripping Poland and every Nazi in it completely apart, she would find him.
