It took him some time to regain his senses, and the first thing he did
was check on Mara. His young bride, whom he still jokingly referred to
as “my fiancée,” was lying on the floor - bruised but conscious.
“Hey, baby,” Sinclair said.
“Hey,” Mara replied, smiling.
Despite the injuries she had sustained, she quickly rose to her feet and embraced her husband. After enduring those days in captivity, she had nearly lost hope. But now, with things looking up, she couldn’t hold back the tears.
“I thought I had lost you...” She sobbed, holding him tighter and tighter, as if never wanting to be separated from him again.
They opened every container in the Hubmaster’s lair, but all the creatures, human or otherwise, were already dead.
For Sinclair, this marked the end of his journey. He had achieved what he had yearned for throughout the days of relentless struggle and hope against all odds. Rational thinking eluded him; he was just happy to be there with his woman. It was something he had never felt before - pure happiness and the shared silence in this foreign world that had initially been intended as an attraction on their honeymoon.
Though they had not yet left, the fear and gloom that had plagued him were already vanquished.
