CHAPTER 4
DEMONS
In my dream, I started at my homework, so when Autumn came home from band practice, we could make the cake pops she promised we would make. I finished my homework and was about to head downstairs, and all of a sudden, something crashed through my window. A bird, a plane, no, it was MAYA! As a demon?!! Her black hair billowed behind her as she flew towards me with dark purple wings. I tried to scream, but nothing came out of my throat.
Then, I woke up startled. I looked out the window, and it was perfectly fine. So I started my homework so that when Autumn gets home, we can make a pink cake for Maya’s 40th birthday. Yay, old age! I finished my homework quickly and was just exiting my room when something crashed through my window. I gulped. Was my dream coming true? Was it Maya as a demon? I turned away from my room and sighed. My imagination was getting the better of me. At least that was what I thought until I heard a snarl from my room and I went back to see Maya. As a demon, I was calm, certain I was hallucinating. That was, until she slashed at my face. I dogged it in the nick of time and slammed the door behind me as I ran down the stairs. Maya was flying after me until the front door opened and hit Maya smack in the face. It was Autumn. Relief filled me. Autumn could help me.
“Mom, why didn’t you wait for me?”
Autumn said, transforming into a demon, too. My short lived hope disappeared in seconds as her dark blue wings hit the door and I saw her bright red eyes peering at me. I ran to the living room and started throwing pillows at them. There was only one more I picked up, and it exploded on her sharp talons. I ran into the kitchen, opened the plate
drawer, and threw one at Maya. She caught the first one easily, but the second one smacked her in the middle of her chest and shattered upon impact. Maya lay on the floor gasping for breath. As I approached her, a sense of deja vu hit me. First my birth mother and now my foster mother. She gave me the creepiest smile as she said
“This isn’t over girl. Mistress will find you and when she does, you’ll be dead.”
Before I could respond to that, Autumn’s body slammed into mine shoving me towards the kitchen counter, away from the plates. I coughed and tried to stand up but my ankle hurt a lot.
“Why would you do this to me Autumn?”
I wheezed while pressing my arm against my rib cage where I knew several bruises would be forming if I managed to survive this. “I thought you were my friend.”
I pulled myself to my knees holding the counter.
Autumn grinned at me and snarled “Mistress will be pleased.” Then she lunged. I managed to grapple my way to standing and inched along the countertop as Autumn regained balance from hitting the fridge which now had a new human sized dent in it. Just as she was about to jump at me again I reached behind me searching for something, for anything and my hands found the knife block. I grabbed the chef’s knife and closed my eyes as I plunged it in Autumn’s neck when she came for me. Her blood spattered all over me, sticky and warm as Autumn clawed at her throat grasping for any way to save herself. There wasn’t, and when she lost all her life, her body slumped to the ground at my feet bleeding over what used to be Maya’s favorite kitchen tile. I fell to my feet and sobbed over her dead body.
