Reid had booked me a blood test for the morning, and had them put a rush on it so that I would know before I left work. I already knew, but this would make it officially documented. Both Dr Connell and Reid wanted me to adjust my workload and, at minimum, work from home three out of the five, sometimes six, days I worked.
I turned them both down and hid from their constant, thoughtful pestering. I understood why they were behaving this way, but I was too stubborn to agree with them. I wanted to believe that I knew what was best for the unborn child and I. Cleaning up my desk and the drawers in my desk; I found all kinds of things that I had forgotten. I had actual work that I should have been doing, but I didn’t really want to do any work. My email dinged on my computer and it was from Reid, saying that he had received my test results for the blood test and we could look at the results when I came up to eat lunch with him.
I counted down the time to my lunch break. Finally, I would hold hospital verified proof of my pregnancy. I was excited, but also terrified. This would make everything far more real for me, but for Reid, too.
Reid was waiting in his office for me and had two containers pulled out. “I ordered some grilled chicken and pasta in white sauce. It shouldn’t bother your stomach too much.”
“That actually sounds great, but I want to pick dinner.”
“Sure. Tell me what you want and I will do my best to get it for you.”
“I want to have cheese pizza for dinner, and I would like to add feta cheese to it. If you want, you can order your own pizza, and I’ll cover the cost.”
“Sounds good. I’ll order some sides too, just in case you have some issues with digesting your pizza,” Reid said, pulling out a chair for me at his desk and sliding my lunch closer to me. “Sit, come eat.”
Sitting down in the chair, he lightly pushed me closer to the desk before he moved back to his chair. He looked at me while he opened his lunch and paused. “I got us a drink, too. Hold on. Let me grab them from the fridge.” He stood up, going to grab two bottles of water out of the fridge and came back.
He set the water bottles down and opened his food container. Following his lead, I opened my food, and the smell of chicken and creamy pasta filled my nose.
“This smells so damn good,” I exclaimed, my mouth watering as the tantalizing aroma filled the room. The scent was irresistible, a harmonious blend of fragrant spices and savoury ingredients that enticed all my senses. I couldn’t help but feel a surge of anticipation, eager to savour the delicious dish. I only hoped that it would like me as much as I was trying to like it. I didn’t want to try my hand at learning what it would be like to evacuate pasta from my stomach. I took a bite and was immediately taken aback. The flavour was intense and perfectly blended. I was sold.
“Ugh! I could eat my body weight in this.” I moaned, and Reid cleared his throat.
“You would be sick, and it wouldn’t be good at all. Trust me on that one,” he said, as he stuffed a bite of pasta and chicken into his mouth and I watched him chew.
I savoured every bite I took and washed it down with the bottle of water Reid got me. I closed my eyes for a moment and imagined myself eating it in a cozy little restaurant.
“I have some of the medication for your stomach if you need it, but right now, I think we should look at your results.”
“I agree. We should get this over with. It will cement it for us both that this is real, there will be no denying it.” I said and watched to see his reaction. He nodded and moved his empty container out of the way. He grabbed his laptop and set it down, firing it up and opening his email. He opened the results and the word positive was highlighted for us both to see.
“Well. We know it’s official now.” I said and pulled my hand through my hair, feeling a little stressed out now.
“We have a lot to talk about. In terms of what the plans are now that we know with a hundred per cent guarantee, you are carrying my child.”
Pushing my leftovers around in the container, I hummed. “I have a lot to research and look into. Recessive alpha pregnancy is rare, but there are some papers about it. In terms of symptoms, I am in the dark here. I don’t even know if I’ll get all the usual nesting urges. Or if I’ll have pheromone dependency.”
“Perhaps it’s best if you move into the condo. You’re close to the hospital. Me too, if you need me. It would comfort me.” Reid said as he closed his laptop and looked at me.
“I think that is smart. But it will take time for me to adjust and move into your place. I have so much stuff I will have to sort and figure out.”
“I would help you if you let me, Sam. And you don’t have to rush, take things slow, you have time and you’re not alone.” Reid said, and I felt the urge to comfort him. Reaching out, I set my hand on his cheek and let out a soft sigh.
“We will figure it out. But I think you’re onto something here. I can pack my essentials and move into the condo, and we can deal with my apartment as we go.”
“I wish I could talk you into coming to my house and staying there. It would be far nicer for you to stay and I want to provide for you and my growing child.” Reid grumbled, and I smiled slightly. This was going to be a sticky situation, because Reid would only respect my space for so long before his natural urge to protect his child kicked in. I had to come up with a solution that worked for both of us.
“I am not against moving into your home, Reid. I think when it’s closer to the time I give birth, staying there with you is the plan. By then, even you should be overtaken by your Alpha urges of protecting our child.” I said and looked at Reid to see his reaction on the matter.
“I can’t say in the future I will have control of urges as an Alpha to protect and provide for you and our child, but I will try my hardest to keep things agreeable,” he said, and checked his watch. “You have to return to work.”
I sighed and stood up. “I’ll see you after work.”
Heading back to my office, I opened my door and my pager went off. Snagging my coat off the rack, I rushed to the emergency room. A nurse was waiting for me, and passed me a chart and started telling me about the situation.
“How long since the miscarriage?” I asked, and the nurse answered quickly. “Just a few days. The omega partner is progressing through the miscarriage fine, but her dominant alpha mate is having some pheromone issues, and has become quite aggressive.”
“I see. He had yet to process the loss of their child. The omega mate is probably still giving off indications of being with child. I’ll prescribe some medication for that after I check in with the alpha.” I said and headed to the room. Knocking lightly, I let myself in and gave the alpha some space with his mate tucked against his side.
“Hello, my name is Dr Samual Woods, but you can call me Sam. I’m here to help. A nurse has briefed me on the situation. I need to check a few things on you, and then I can help get this aggression and confusion sorted.”
The alpha held tightly onto his mate as I got closer and she looked stressed out.
“I’m sure they told you, but his pheromones will settle again once your body has dealt with the child inside you. Until then, a special type of suppressant is the key to keeping him calm. It will act like a sedative to his pheromone system.”
“Thank you, this miscarriage has been hard for me, but seeing him affected like this too is heartbreaking. This was our first child.” She breathed, and he seemed to get a little touchy about her comment and released a good dosage of his pheromones. The scent turned my stomach slightly, and I pushed it down. I couldn’t get sick here. I had a job to do.
I got close enough to the alpha to take his temperature and look over the rest of his vitals. “Do you know your current weight?”
“He weighs about a hundred and ninety pounds.” She said, and petted his hair, her concern for him clearly written on her face.
“Ok, I’m going to grab some medication, and unfortunately the initial dosage is only injectable, so if you could, I would like you to release your hormones to keep him calmer. It will be better for all of us like that.”
Leaving the room, I grabbed a needle and two different tips, one to draw the medication and one to administer it. The room would have alcohol wipes and bandages. Heading back to the room, I opened the door, closing it behind me.
“I will need your thigh exposed.”
She made him stand up, and she shoved his sweatpants down, and pulled his boxers up a bit. The whole time he was watching me, disgust on his face. Filling up the needle, and changing out the needle tip gauge, I grabbed a few wipes and ripped them. Wiping down his leg, he was calmer than I thought. Her pheromones were helping quite a bit. He tensed his thigh when I pushed the needle in, but quickly seemed to relax. The medication was extremely fast acting and within a minute, he would already feel most of the effects. I pulled the needle out and held pressure to his leg with a cotton pad.
“Every dosage from here on out will be oral via capsules. They will give a prescription to fill at our pharmacy. Because of the drug, you can only get it here. Do you have questions for me before I tell the nurse you’re free to get out of here after another check of your vitals?”
“No, thank you. We really appreciate your help.”
“If there are any more problems, book an appointment to get in and see me. We can find a solution then. But in a few weeks, this should clear up.” Leaving the room, I took a deep breath of the nearly untainted air and dry heaved roughly. Heading to the nurses’ station, I gave them all the information I relayed. Pausing in the middle of the conversation to dry heave again.
“Dr Woods, are you unwell?” the attending doctor asked. “I can give you a quick check over and give you something for that.”
“You can’t. I need my Alpha to settle this, not medication.” I groaned and practically sprinted from the emergency room. I needed Reid. I needed all of him.
