Indigo by Julian Ferguson

Bait And Switch

Bait And Switch

Apr 02, 2024

Indigo heard someone step through the door, and her thoughts quieted down slightly. Suddenly, the blindfold on her face was pulled off with... surprisingly, no force. The hand that removed it was rough, yet the motion itself was soft, and caring. Almost like a father. Blood-boiling hatred burned in Indigo as she stared up at none other than Mr. Sato. Tears streamed down her face as she said nothing, to which Mr. Sato sighed and wiped away her tears, causing Indigo to quite quickly jerk her head away. She was completely denying his touch, even if it was meant to be comforting. Even the thought of him attempting to "comfort" her disgusted her, and only fueled her hatred.

"It wasn't supposed to be like this.", he said with another sigh. "You had one job, Indigo. Kill him.". "He got the best of me!", she pouted.

"Yes, but that isn't supposed to happen.", Mr. Sato responded with exasperation. "You were our best agent. You were my daughter. Now look at you.". Indigo's breath hitched, and she tried her damndest to hide her emotions from him. "I'm sorry, okay?! It was just one little slip-up, I can be better!". "Can you, Indigo?".

"What?", she said, running out of breath. "Can you be better?", Mr. Sato said. Any warmth in his tone that was previously there was gone. "If I can't even trust you to take out a himbo mafia boss, how can I trust you to do anything even vaguely more complicated?".

"He's smarter than you think. He doesn't think with his lower half like you were probably thinking he does.", Indigo said, grabbing at strings to stay on the team. More frankly, to stay alive. "Besides, he... he might have put something in my drink! I slept like a baby, and I haven't slept like that in a long, long time.". Mr. Sato chuckled, saying "Indigo, do you really think that saying how well you slept is a proper excuse for this? Please.".

More tears fell out of her round eyes, and she thought about how pathetic she looked right now. Like a goddamned blubbering fool begging for her life. If she was still as loyal as a dog to Sato, she would be thinking about how disappointed he must be with her. Giving puppy eyes to the man who was probably going to kill her anyway. "Look, if you're going to kill me anyways, just do it.".

Mr. Sato looked at her with shock, cupping her face in his hands. "Oh, Indigo... I'd never kill you. What do you think of me?". He gave her one last sad look before pulling out a knife and cutting the ropes tying her bruised wrists to the chair, doing the same with her ankles. Sighing in relief at the loss of pressure on her limbs, she got out of the wooden chair, wobbling slightly. She was still in attack mode by the time Sato gave her the knife, which she then realized was her penknife that she had tried to find earlier. Taking it with a raised eyebrow, she asked with a similarly suspicious tone "And the others? Are they okay?".

"Indigo, if I wouldn't hurt you, why would I hurt the other girls? They are all my students, you're simply more... protected than they are.". That sentence made her cringe slightly. "Does that mean some of us are expendable?", she thought to herself. Sato motioned her out of the room, leading her through the winding hallways and unassuming offices of Hanzai. Inc, until the two of them were led to a meeting room, where the other, equally worn-out girls sat.

Keiko looked at Indigo with scared eyes and gripped Rose's hand. Emily was rubbing her temples, and taking deep breaths. Indigo swallowed before sitting down with them. Mr. Sato nodded and left the room, and after a few seconds, Rose exclaimed "What the fuck did you do?!". "What did I do?! I didn't do anything!", Indigo responded. Keiko whined Rose's name, letting go of her hand as she stood up quickly, still fighting with Indigo. Emily plugged her ears as Indigo said "I failed to kill someone, I was outsmarted! So sue me!". "You're not supposed to be outsmarted, though!", Rose yelled back. At this point, it was more of a sigh mixed with a yell.

"Rose, stop! Please!", Keiko cried out, suddenly standing up from the table. Rose turned her head to see her girlfriend's tear-stained face. "Why are we fighting?!", she asked with dismay. "We've all been outsmarted once in some way!". Rose shook her head, hugging Keiko and muttering apologies into her shoulder. "I'm sorry, Kiki. I'm so sorry.".

Emily sighed and looked up at Indigo. "How are you feeling?". She shrugged in response. "I'm breathing. Anything to survive, yeah?". "Anything to survive.", Emily responded. Indigo sat down, flopping into the office chair. It was firm as a rock, but felt so comforting and soft in comparison to the wooden chair of the basement. Even with this comfort from Sato, she still felt betrayed that he would even fake scaring her like that. Her blood was cooling down, but some hatred remained.

After a little more banter like making sure everyone was okay, Mr. Sato came back into the room. He looked as serious as ever, impossible to read. Which meant, none of them were prepared for what was going to happen. "Girls, I am old. I am going to die soon, and I need you four to take over for me.". All the girls' eyes widened as they heard these words, and all of them knew exactly who was going to be the leader.

"To cut to the chase, you girls need to go back and kill Mr. Bernard. For real this time. I don't care if you need to shoot him and all his bodyguards, you just need to kill him.". Indigo sighed, asking "Look, I know I shouldn't ask this, but why? Why are you so desperate to kill him?". Sato's eye twitched as he asked "Do you remember the young man you trained with?". Those words stirred up too many memories in Indigo's mind, and she would have gotten up immediately in shock if it wasn't for Emily grabbing and squeezing her hand.

"You're telling me that the guy I used to train with... that Louis is the man I'm trying to kill?", she asked with shock in her tone. Mr. Sato nodded and sighed as he walked closer to the table, and Indigo couldn't help but inch away slightly. He looked back at her, saying "I know, my daughter. It must be confusing-". "Not confusing, just weird as all hell! What did you do? Or more accurately, why did he leave?". Sato sighed again, petting Indigo's shoulder and responding "He got cold feet. He felt as if what he was hired to do was wrong.". "I don't think he was hired, per se.", Indigo said, crossing her arms. "Considering how I was brought into this industry... I sincerely doubt he went to his mommy and said 'Oh, I wanna be an assassin!'.".

Sato chuckled, saying "You've always kept your sense of humor. We'll get you on the next plane to France soon, alright?". Indigo sighed and nodded, saying "Alright. Can we go to our room, now?". Sato nodded back, moving his arm and motioning the girls to leave the room and head to their shared rooms for sleep.
