After entering the house she was told to enter the study as the family head was waiting there for her.
Knock, knock.
"Come in", it sounded from inside the room.
"You called for me, sir."
"Yes, I heard that as of late you're not showing as good results as usually, so I wanted to ask if there is some kind of problem?"
She could feel his stare that was resting on her even when she was looking directly at the ground so that he wouldn't see her expression.
His question wasn't out of worry about the volunteers, but rather if she was able to continue doing her job without telling anyone a word about what was happening.
Even though she wasn't sure if she would be able to live up to his hopes she was much more afraid of what would happen if she told she couldn't continue doing what she was doing right now. She knew that if he found out about her doubts and the fact she lowered the doses he would get rid of her just like he got rid of her old assistants, as they wanted to expose the truth of what was happening.
"There is."
"And what would that be?", he asked with a cold stare expecting her to tell him she wouldn't continue doing her job.
"The current volunteers aren't able to keep up with their daily doses, some of them have even started collapsing more frequently during the past few days", she stated hoping he would allow her to decrease the doses, but she was wrong.
"Continue the way you did before", he said walking up to the window looking at the red moon that was tainting the whole city an eerie red. "There's no need to worry about a handful of lifes, if this is a success we'll be able to save hundreds of lifes later on. And you don't need to concern yourself with getting a new volunteer, I've already found one for you. Make sure that this one survives."
She wanted to protest, telling him that they didn't need to die, but she knew better than to talk back to him, because if she did she would end up in a much worse condition then they were in.
"As you wish, Sir", was the last thing she said before leaving his study and sinking to the ground in the hall.
"What do I do? I don't want anybody to die because of me", she said in a hushed voice thinking no one could hear her.
"What do you mean by 'die for me'?", asked Cesar who was just passing by with a worried expression. "Did something happen?"
"No, everything is fine, I just finished a new book and had to think about something one of the leads said", she said smiling at him, but she couldn't trick him.
"You're lying to me."
"I'm not, you know you can believe m-"
"Don't try to make stuff up, just look at yourself. You're a wreck."
She wanted to tell and reassure him that everything was fine, but she knew he wouldn't believe her and right now she wasn't even sure if she would believe herself if she was in his situation, even though she was extremely dense when it came to see how people were truly feeling.
All she wanted to do was tell him what was happening and hear him tell her that everything would be fine and that she was doing the right thing, but she couldn't do that to him. She didn't want him to feel even more burdened than he was already feeling just because of her selfish desire to be told she was right.
"-sigh- You know you can tell me everything, Mari", he said looking at her with his warm eyes that made her heart ache even more, knowing he thought she was doing the best she could.
"I know, but everything's fine, really", she said holding back tears. "I'm just tired and stressed from work."
"Alright, tell me if there's anything you need", he said still not fully convinced, but he let it slide knowing that she wouldn't give him an honest answer if he kept pushing.
"I will, good night", she said, as she got up and started walking down the hall.
Hesitant Cesar wanted to ask her something, but he decided not to.
~I guess it can wait...~
"What's this place?", the kid asked afraid clinging to the man's hand.
"This will be your home until your condition gets better", the man answered gently stroking the kid's head.
"But my mom said that it's not possible to heal my lungs and heart", he said slowly backing away out of fear.
"It's fine you can trust me. I'll make sure that nothing happens to you, while you're here. Besides your mother agreed so there's really nothing to worry about I told them to treat you with as much care as possible."
The boy nodded and hesitantly asked a question that had been bothering since he left.
"What will happen to my mom now that I left? She wasn't feeling good the past few days, can you send someone to check up on her aswell?"
"I will, but I'm afraid I can't help your mom."
"Why is that, you're able to help me aswell, isn't that why you brought me here?"
"It is, but you see the reason we're able to help you is because your special and your mother has been sick for a long time, so now we can't help her anymore."
"Mom's been sick for a long time?", he asked worried about his mother.
"Yes", the man said with what the child interpreted as a sad expression. "So we need to get you your help as soon as possible so you'll be okay, alright? Now come here I'm going to introduce you to your new doctor. Say hi to ----."
"Is it true that you can help me?", the kid asked with a new hope to be able to live like every other normal child.
"Yes, I'll make sure that you'll be able to run around and play with kids your age, you'll be out of here as soon as school starts for you."
"I'll be able to attend school like everyone else?", the boy asked excited with a big smile on his face.
"Of course, now come with me", the doctor said taking his hand and helping him get on the chair. Then she turned around and grabbed something before turning around with a vial in one hand and a syringe in the other.
"I hope you're not afraid of needles, otherwise this might be quite painfull, but don't worry it'll get better with time."
