The gentle breeze off the Han River caressed Kamon’s face as he stood by the water’s edge, captivated by the scenic beauty of Han River as the sun dipped low, casting a warm glow over the cityscape in the background. Kamon snapped a picture with his camera, excited by the breathtaking beauty in front of his eyes.
This was one of his favorite spots to chill and take pictures. He leaned back and clicked photo after photo of the water ripples in the morning light, as the rays of the sunrise peaked through the building and across its delicate surface.
He smiled.
This place always brought him peace.
A squawk pulled his attention over the railing and below onto the edge of the waterline where two birds huddled together in the wind over a nest and a tiny little egg he could just make the shape of between their feathers.
‘Cute!’ Kamon leaned over the railing and zoomed in, hoping to get a better vantage point of the little family ta braved the wind and the tumultuous edge of the waters for a happy little home for their baby.
“Oh, Hey! You don’t want to do that, sir, I promise!”
Kamon heard a soft voice call from behind him. But he ignored it, whatever people were fighting about back there didn’t interest him, nature did, and he couldn’t be bothered by what idiots behind him chose to do while he was answering the call of the wild.
Sometimes he hated how noisy this spot overlooking the Han River got, didn’t anyone care about the wildlife anymore? They just came for their selfies, and to share their livestreams, then moved on.
Kamon smiled as the bigger male fluffed out his wings and wrapped the female in them to protect her from the wind. He lined up his Zoom and held as physically still as he could. Then snapped.
‘I got it!’ He thought triumphantly.’
“Ayeo! I said get down from there, whatever you are going through isn’t worth it.” The voice said, and he felt a force smack into him, causing him to lose his balance as the angle of his position, hanging precariously over the fence and the force of being thrown backward caused his reflexes to jump around, and his grip on his very nice camera slip away.
Kamon watched in horror as his expensive camera slipped from his grasp and tumbled into the tumultuous waters of the Han River. He had been trying to capture the perfect shot, leaning out beyond the safety barrier in his eagerness, but now all he could do was watch as his prized possession disappeared beneath the surface.
Before he could even process what had happened, a strong hand grabbed hold of his arm and pulled him back from the edge. Startled, Kamon stumbled, falling back onto his butt on the ground, his heart racing with adrenaline as he turned and looked up to see who had saved him.
It was a young man, his features sharp and determined as he looked at Kamon with concern. “Are you okay?” he asked, his voice tinged with worry and frustration.
“You know there are so many reasons to live, the people who love you, like your family… ah, wait, you might not have a family. Ah, friends… oh, you might not have those too. Oh, umm, listening to your favorite song, do you like music? Oh, maybe you don’t like music.” The guy rambled.
Kamon stared at him, still in shock., “Oh, I know. You can always look forward to your favorite food, you know the joy of being able to taste it again. Or, maybe do you not have any money for food? If that’s the case, then I can get you something, anything, and you can stay with me. I can be your reason to live. Just believe in me, okay? I’m Ilseong, you can live for me.” He said, patting his chest.
Kamon laughed, incredulous. ‘He thought I was going to jump… And for that… I lost everything for my thesis, and my, my camera!’
Kamon nodded, still in shock. “Thank you, but I wasn’t trying to jump.” he managed to stammer out, his voice barely above a whisper.
Ilseong paused, halting, his mouth still open, about to say something, but his voice squeaked out a sound that fizzled out quickly.
“You weren’t,” He said in surprise.
