"Crara protec Dia! Crara frens!" Dia had a good point. Had Chara been as horrible as she said she was, would she have ever offered assistance? Instead of going to help the babies, would not she have continued climbing Mt. Ebott and ignored them?
To be expected, she pondered the matter further but remained sceptical.
After much resistance, Chara caves. As she lies on her back, tears well up in her eyes, but she holds them back. She remains motionless, utterly silent. Despondent, she lies there and wonders, "Do I truly deserve this…? Receiving even a subtle compliment does makes me feel good... I-I’m….”
She was having difficulty processing it, but reality was gradually setting in. She had always been a victim, but for the first time, she felt truly at peace.
At this point, Giratina positioned himself atop Chara's abdomen, resembling a loaf of bread. Just then, Palkia caught Chara entirely off guard by laying his head on her forehead. In an effort to reassure her, the three infants drew nearer than before.
A choked-out "Thank you..." came out of Chara's mouth as she closed her eyes, her tears flowing even more. Then, as carefully as she possibly could, she raised one of her arms to gently pat Palkia’s back, and wrapped the other around both Giratina and Dialga resting on her body, holding the 3 infants close to her body.
Using his power to distort reality, Arceus gained access to the mountain's core. Now was the moment to find out what these strange beasts were. Instead of a band of barbaric beasts, Arceus discovers a whole civilization and a city when he climbs the mountain. They possessed a variety of goods, including apparel, stores, "homes," and a hotel! It caught Arceus off guard, but he was not prepared to make a decision just yet.
He had to know for sure that they were not dangerous...
With great care, Arceus returned to his normal form in a hidden area, out of sight from the monsters, before poofing into existence, all in an effort to avoid frightening anyone. He slowly approached some of the monster civilians. He struck up a conversation with them, attempting to learn as much as he could about their way of life and daily routines down here through mostly small talk.
The more he conversed with the monsters, the more he realized that they appeared largely tranquil, content to simply enjoy their newfound existence underground. Most of them wanted to see the Surface and go back, but they did not appear to be in a rush to do so either, because neither the king nor the queen was particularly keen on moving things along quickly.
After much delay, Chara allowed it to sink in. She was finally with other living beings who provided her with peace, acceptance, and what she could only guess was "Love." She sat up and hugged the trio of babies, finally feeling like she had a reason to live.
Chara did not let go of her worry for Arceus. But in the end, she chose to have faith in the kids, thinking that maybe... Arceus knew what he was doing, and he would return home safely.
Chara's mental strength finally gave way. She had been through so much for so long that she finally let it all go. Chara fell soundly asleep. Years and years of exhaustion, pain, fear, and paranoia all hit her at once. For once, she slept with a genuine smile. The trio remained by her side and eventually fell asleep as well, all of which snuggled up against her chest and surrounding Chara with their love.
The "Monsters" had a family, friends, and a monarchy—and one thing was crystal clear: it was not oppressive. The inhabitants of the subterranean world coexisted harmoniously. However, being underground naturally imparted a gloomy air to their way of life. According to the monsters, claustrophobia was also a big issue. Aside from that, the monsters appeared to be relatively harmless creatures.
Nonetheless, an odd sensation was present. Although clearly capable of self-defense, Arceus had the impression that this race was largely peaceful. And he could feel the same capacity for cruelty in their souls as he felt in all beings. And yet, they maintained their tranquility despite it all, and something felt off. Something about two monsters in particular—the so-called King and Queen of the Monsters—had aroused his interest. How the monsters would react if the barrier were to be breached was something he could only learn by conversing with them.
After some thought, Arceus told the "King" and the "Queen" his true identity.
Asgore, as he was known, was tending to the yellow flowers surrounding his throne room, daydreaming of the pleasant cup of tea that awaited him and his wife and son. These days, it was business as usual for him. Upon seeing Asgore, Arceus immediately entered the throne room via teleportation.
Asgore, as he was known, was tending to the yellow flowers surrounding his throne room, daydreaming of the pleasant cup of tea that awaited him and his wife and son. These days, it was business as usual for him. Arceus teleported himself into the throne room the moment he laid eyes on Asgore. But as Arceus unveiled himself, the enormous beast's unexpected arrival startled Asgore to its very core.
“WHO IN THE UNDERGROUND-!?” The King responded, ready to arm himself. However, after seeing Arceus' non-threatening demeanor, he backed down. "Forgive me; I am still on edge after what humans have done to us. I have never encountered a monster like you before. What is your name?”
He stood tall and solemn, exuding an air of majesty as he spoke, "My name is Arceus, and I am here today to pass judgment."
This statement somewhat surprised Asgore. “"Judgement...?" I do not understand what you mean. Humans had already "judged" us about ten years ago.” The King states, now using slightly more careful wording. Even though he did not understand why, he had an innate sense that he should do his best not to enrage Arceus..
A more solemn tone came over Arceus as he started to speak. “I have already judged most of the Humans on the surface of your world. I have concluded that the remaining ones were only following corrupted leaders, so they pose no threat to anyone anymore. Thus, they should not pose any more of a threat now that those leaders have been removed. But my purpose in visiting this site is to inquire: what is your objective? What kind of species are you? Are you aggressive or do you want to coexist peacefully?”
The King was stunned and utterly taken aback by the response. The thought that those responsible for his problems could just disappear without a trace perplexed him. He could not believe it, yet.
Arceus took a commanding stance. From what I have heard from your civilians, your imprisonment was unjust, and I want to do what I can to alleviate that. However, you must demonstrate to me that you are prepared to live in harmony with others. Can we expect any of the vengeful monsters to attempt to wreak havoc on the humans living on the surface?”
After a few moments of staring at Arceus, Asgore got to his feet. “Arceus, was it? We could have a nice chat about this over tea, I believe.”
While Asgore and Arceus converse, a few hours slip away.
Over time, Asgore came to recognize Arceus, particularly in light of the numerous miracles Arceus had performed for him, prompting Asgore to wonder what sort of monster Arceus actually was. An example would be Arceus's miraculous ability to revive several of Asgore's dying plants in a snap. It was as if their wilting and withering had never occurred.
When Toriel arrived to check on the two, she had even taken Arceus to the Ruins' catacombs. Arceus showed off his divine abilities again by reviving some of the monsters that died in the battle, like Exon, Asgore’s father. From him, Arceus learned the truth about what happened to spark the war.
Rather than betraying the humans, Exon had taken Valin's soul to save them. It seems like Exon was in a state of great panic when he absorbed Valin's soul just before they passed away. Unfortunately, the humans must have witnessed him do this, because they mistook it for an act of violence.
After hearing this and observing how genuine Exon's aura appeared, Arceus gave in and resolved to breach the barrier on behalf of the monsters. Returning to New Home, Arceus is escorted by the Dreemurr family to the barrier. Arceus managed to destroy the barrier with nearly all of his power.
In addition to destroying the barrier, and just to be safe, Arceus assisted in at least speaking with the humans and resolving the entire misunderstanding between Humans and Monsters, essentially sowing the seeds for the two races to at least begin promoting peace between themselves. However, he delegated the rest of the work to them.
Although Arceus was well aware that relationships would be precarious even with his assistance, he could not help but feel hopeful about the world's prospects.
At last Chara roused from her slumber. She wasn't, however, lying in the same spot she had before. When she awoke, she discovered her head was resting on one of Arceus' hooves.
He returned, completely safe, though he appeared slightly more tired than when she last saw him a few hours before. The infants, she saw later on, were also alert and running about playing with one another.
"Arceus...!" Chara jumps to her feet and holds on tightly to Arceus's neck, her face contorted into a broad smile. Even so, it was difficult to wrap her small arms around Arceus, even when he was lying down. “You’re back!”
Arceus lowered his head just enough for Chara to give him a proper hug, and he let out a warm laugh. "Greetings, Chara. Were you concerned about my safety?”
"You have no idea. I feared that the humans in my village would kill you. I-I am just glad you are safe." Chara reacts by rubbing her cheek against Arceus's verdant ones and clinging to him even tighter, this time her tears flowing freely from relief that Arceus was okay.
"I apologize, my dear. I did not intend to frighten you. I promise, though, that they will never again cause trouble for you or the monsters.” Arceus comforts Chara by nuzzling her as she clings to him tenderly.
Chara pauses and stares at him, perplexed by his previous remark, "The Monsters...? What have the monsters got to do with anything, Arceus?”
Arceus tenderly uses his other hoof to pat her head and says, "Well, Chara... It is a lengthy tale, but I will keep it brief for now. I broke down the barrier that had been holding the monsters captive, and now those monsters who had been hiding underground are free to roam. I concluded that they did not deserve anything that had happened to them. I listened to the entire story and I made a deliberate judgment, and the world will now heal on its own."
"But, how?" Chara exclaims in shock, "Dad always said it was impossible!" "You needed seven human souls and one monster soul to accomplish this."
"If you are concerned that I murdered a human being and stole their SOUL, you are mistaken. "I simply used my own power to destroy it once I was certain that the monsters would not harm anyone," Arceus explains gently, and Chara nods, though she is still surprised.
“.......... You are incredible. Is there anything you cannot do?"
"I could have failed to protect you..." Arceus trails off, recalling the last time he brought Chara safely into his dimension, when she was battered and bruised. "Had I arrived even just one minute later... it is possible you would not have survived."
“............It is okay... "You have more important things to do than worrying about me..." Chara responds before despondently trailing off.
"You are as valuable to me as my children. The reason I wanted to confront those villagers about their mistreatment of you is because of this,” Arceus says honestly. “I was determined to ensure that they would not be allowed to escape punishment.”
“..........You didn’t have to…. I’m just a human. We are not even related. I am just a stranger who happened to be present when your children arrived in my universe.” Chara replies before she suddenly gets a guilty expression on her face.
As soon as Arceus hears what Chara has to say, his anger seems to boil over once more. However, he tries to stifle it anyhow. “Still, it is unacceptable that they subjected you to that treatment. You should not have to put up with your parents' abuse simply because they made you. And I can assure you that you are deserving of my utmost support and protection. I would not have returned if I did not think I could handle them. I can not stress enough how much you are valued, Chara. And I would do it all again if I had the chance.”
As his words sink in, Chara keeps her face buried in his fur and tears start to fall even faster down her cheeks. 'Could this be real?' Reflecting on her past, Chara could not help but feel envious of the other children in the village who had parents who genuinely cared for them, while her own parents seemed uninterested. She longed for a family that would genuinely value her. 'Was this truly how it felt to be loved?'
"I just wish I had found you sooner. I could have protected you before you suffered so much at their hands…”
"...I do, too." Chara admits as she continues to hug him. "But... if it is true that… you cast judgment on my parents and the villagers... What do I do if you... murdered them? Where do I go from here?” Even though Chara is not hoping for a response, she asks him anyways. There was nowhere she could go, even if the cruel villagers had all died. None of those people brought anything positive into Chara’s life; rather, they filled her with nothing but nightmares.
"Do you want to stay here and live with us? You are welcome to stay in my home and dimension for as long as you desire," Arceus tells Chara, turning his head to give her a tender nuzzle and pour his love into her.
After that, Chara gasps and looks up at Arceus in shock at his offer; she searches his face to see if he is serious about letting her stay with them.
Looking down at her, Arceus smiles and offers her what appears to be a sincere and serious offer.
"I....." Chara pauses, her eyes scanning his face in case this was an awful joke. Still, when she sees that he is being genuine, she cracks the biggest, most vulnerable smile and says, "I... I want t....to stay here with you guys..." If….it’s alright?”
"Then it will be, my daughter," Arceus responds, his expression changing to one of tenderness and care toward her. “Welcome home, Chara.”
After hearing that Arceus had adopted Chara, Chara turned around to see three small babies whose cries betrayed their immense joy at having a new sister.
While being tickled by the babies, Chara emitted a genuine laugh. At last, she had broken free from her shackles of suffering; she was free.
At long last, she had a genuine home, a fulfilling family, and a future to look forward to.
