= CHRIS POV =
My shift started at 8am at the hotel. The sous chef was sick and the kitchen I was in-charge of that day was the banquet kitchen, which was hosting a conference of 300 people. I was on high alert from the moment I walked in until the moment the conference started and we serving out the first course the minute the guest were seated. I didn’t have a moment to think about Sarah…or at least I shouldn’t have been thinking about her at all, but everything was reminding me of her.
The delicate orchid topping for the chocolate ganache-covered cupcakes, the stir fry side dish, even the cutlery was making me linger a second longer than I usually did, and Rosa my director noticed it.
“Chris, see me” Rosa suddenly approached me and said as I was tasting the soup that was to go out in 5 minutes along with other appetizers.
“Marcus, a little paprika and two more cuts of butter” I said before following Rosa to her office.
“What is it, its crunch time” I asked her sharply.
“Look, I’m more than aware, but why are the dishes staggering? You are usually on point, are you feeling, ok?” Rosa asked.
“Urgh, some trouble at home. I need, I need to figure out how to settle some umm, chores? And my roommate –“ I started, but rubbed my head, this was such a silly thing to have a problem with, let alone talk about to a superior.
Anna laughed and shook her head “Ah, no worries, I totally understand. Coming from the Philippines, I have had my share of troublesome roommates as I’m always having to share the rent. In this economy, it just makes sense, you know? Anyway I didn’t know you were doing the same!” Rosa exclaimed, surprised.
“It just started, I mean she just moved in, and I’m having a hard time keeping track of the things she is responsible, and the things I am responsible, you know? We keep getting into…heated discussions over them” I explained, feeling my face flush as I thought back on the ‘heated discussions’, I really needed to work on keeping my hands off her.
“Ah! I know what you can do to fix that. Here, there is this an app I use to keep track of everyone’s chores, and bills, see?” Anna said and showed me her phone.
The app looked comprehensive. There was a list of chores and related activities, and it allowed sharing to as many people as you liked. When a task was completed, you could tick it off and even check to see if bills have been paid off or not.
“The secret is you share the app to your roommates but keep all admin rights. That way they have to show you the bills before you cross them off, or else they tick “paid” and act like they really did when they haven’t,” Rosa explained proudly “ After this I never had another worry about them using too much bath water or leaving all the lights on as I can see that they haven’t paid their bills, and I chase them out when they start freeloading!”
I smiled, Rosa really was a hard ass, at work and in her personal life, no wonder she made director at 28.
“Ok, you know what, yeah, I’ll download that and get my household in order, thank you” I said and smiled.
“No worries, now get back out there and stop worrying! We got to keep our clean and punctual track record or Boss is going to talk our ears off” Rosa chided and shooed me out of her office.
I returned back to work feeling better. I had to do my best, there was someone at home, waiting for me, depending on me. I couldn’t mess up, and maybe with the app, we might be able to keep track of this request and punishment system, so that I don’t go overboard with my requests.
