(Uhh tbh I forgot about it but I’ll make up some mermaid lore about it)
Mermaid magic evolved to make it so that when they fully get out of the water they have a swimsuit on. This was the case because so many were dying from getting out of the water with no real clothing on and immediately getting found out and killed because mermaids were supposedly bad luck/ attracted sirens (which would eat humans).

Lita, a mermaid, has been forced into life as a police officer and because of that is really overworked. She longs for the day she will quit, especially since her job consists less of upholding the law, and more of terrorizing and falsely arresting sirens. One day she hears on the news about a shipwreck and decides to check it out, and after that her life changes forever.
