Indigo by Julian Ferguson

Nightfall

Nightfall

May 29, 2024

Indigo sat on her bunk bed, the orange light from the sunset flooding through the slit between her window and curtains. Staring at the wind play with the tall trees outside made her somehow feel like time was slowing down, that being something she didn't want. She wanted this moment to be over, but she felt queasy, and staring into her room gave her a sense of impending doom. Blasting her favorite albums didn't help either. Nothing she did was doing anything to help the feeling she had; like something terrible was going to happen.

Minutes that felt like hours passed. Or maybe they were seconds, she didn't know until Emily poked her wrist from the bottom bunk. It was dangling off the side of the top bunk. "You need something?" Indigo asked, removing one of her earbuds.

"I just really need to talk to you. Get down here," Emily stated blankly. Shrugging it off, Indigo got off the top bunk, flopping onto the bottom where Emily sat in her pajamas, which consisted of an oversized band tee and pajama shorts. They looked like they were from Forever 21, or some generic store like that. "Okay, what is it?" Indigo asked, pausing her music.

"How are you going to act like everything is okay?, Emily sighed. "I never said I was, did I say that? Rose, did I say that?" "Rose is listening to someone read Memoirs of A Geisha, what do you need?" Keiko responded, turning her head to Indigo and Emily's bunk bed across the room. Indigo grimaced, asking again "Uh- yeah, does it seem like I'm trying to act like everything is okay?"

"Yeah, it actually sounds like that's exactly what you're doing," Keiko said bluntly, nibbling on a strand of her hair. "Oh, thanks Kiki!" Indigo sighed, slapping her thighs with frustration. Emily bit her lip and crossed her arms, staring at Indigo with an "I told you so" look. "Oh, shut the hell up," Indigo groaned. Emily threw her hands up, dryly chuckling. "I didn't say a word."

"Don't you G'Kar me! I will not take this!" Indigo exclaimed, pointing at Emily. "Who in the world is G'Kar?" Keiko asked, still nibbling on her hair. "You hate sci-fi, I wouldn't expect you to know what Babylon 5 is, now go to bed!" Indigo said, not even turning to Keiko. Keiko nuzzled down in her blankets with some sarcastic "Thanks, Mom" statement, while Rose was still listening to her audiobook.

Emily turned back to Indigo, running her tongue along the inside of her cheek thoughtfully. "Yeah, it totally seems like you're shrugging this whole thing off. Why do you trust Sato? Why have you been his little dog, following him around all this time?" Indigo bit her lip, scooping her bangs out of her face. "I don't- well, I'm noticing some things about him that are pretty shady. Even I, a trained killer- a trained assassin knows that some of this shit is freaky."

"Freaky is an understatement. Bloody messed up, I'd say," Emily chuckled dryly. "Messed right up!" Keiko exclaimed from under her blankets. Emily smiled softly at Keiko's squeaky voice before getting back to the point. "I, erm... I have an idea," she said, a mischievous spark forming in her eyes. "If you're saying we should conspire against him, I say you're out of your effing mind," Indigo said bluntly.

Emily bit her lip, nodding. "Yeah! Yeah, obvi. I wasn't thinking about that at all." "Emily!" Indigo exclaimed with slight laughter. "What! Didn't I just say I wasn't thinking about that?" Emily laughed back. "I mean, hey, it's your choice if you wanna stay with the creepy Yakuza guy who kidnapped you and the rest of us when we were like, not even 13!"

Indigo opened her mouth to speak but stopped upon realizing her point. "Okay, fine, Emily. I'll think about it. But only if you stop giving me puppy eyes! Hypnotizing people is rude, as I am only one man," she said, with a humorous, faux-British accent upon saying those last few words. With a scoff, Emily responded, "I was not giving you 'puppy eyes'!" "Right... let's go to bed, okay?" Emily nodded as Indigo climbed back up onto the top bunk.

Mr. Sato sat in his office, drinking scotch and staring thoughtfully off into space until his assistant came in. A tall, slender girl, with foxy eyes and long black hair, with sleek bangs in casual yet practical attire. "Kate," he said, seeing her stance through the darkened doorway. "Yes, Mr. Sato?" she asked, her silvery voice echoing through the wooden-walled room. Sato held up his glass to Kate, implying he wanted another drink.

"Sir, do we need to take care of Indigo and her friends?" Kate asked, eyes darting to the gun she kept under her shirt as she poured him another glass. "No. She's trusted me all her life," said Mr. Sato. "It would be cruel to terminate her now." "Agreed. She is valuable."  "Valuable? Hell, Kate, she's our best agent!" he said, slamming his fist on his desk for emphasis. Kate nodded, taking a sip out of the scotch bottle. "But", she said, "It seems she's getting suspicious. Perhaps it wasn't the smartest idea to tell her about Louis." Sato groaned, taking a swig from his glass. "Perhaps... you're right." "As always," she interrupted with a smirk. "Yeah, yeah." Sato continued. "Keep an eye on her for me, dear.".

Kate nodded, a smile turning the corners of her lips. "Of course. I presume you want me to wake up the girls in the morning?" Sato nodded, so she continued. "Good. I'll help them pack their bags. I'll make sure Indigo doesn't fail again. Though it's gonna be harder than before since now Bernard knows for sure we're after him." "But of course! He may be foolish at times, but he isn't stupid. It's gonna take everything Indigo has to take him out. But, what do we know? She might do it." Kate licked her lips, nodding and looking away for a brief second to think. "Mmhm. She might."
