In that dark and dense forest, every one of my senses seemed to be heightened. Every break of a branch and dull rustling of the leaves sent shivers down my spine, as I faced the emptiness around me. Uneasiness seeped from my pores as I braced myself for what was to come. For a while, that's all it was; uneasiness. It wasn’t until long that a new feeling took over my entire being. Panic. It lodged its way into my body as I dawned upon one and only one realization. The footsteps were getting closer. With each buzz and hum enveloping my senses, and every shift in the environment around me, I felt my time coming near. A flickering blue light inched its way to me, dense and heavy steps marked its place on the ground before me, and an eerie silence which soon followed until…it stopped. Everything stopped. Every sound, all sources of light, anything that may have been there to help or even indicate what sort of danger I was in…stopped. Perhaps it went away. Or maybe by some miracle I was safe after all?
In front of me came a moist spine-chilling breath amidst the darkness.
I was wrong, and I would pay for that.
Lighting up the small clearing of the forest, the blue orb of light expanded until I could now not only see myself but the enemy in front of me. A pair of saber-like jaws bit down, in the area I once stood, as I fell in fear onto the ground. A white and ice gray creature stood looming above me. Emotions swirled like wind as I stared up in shock, confusion, and fear at the creature before me.
This isn’t right…This shouldn’t be happening.
And it wasn’t. Everything was off. This shouldn’t have been happening yet. The Fengli Wind Beast. Later on in the plot, that group of bullies staged a prank on the villian, Bai Huiliang. That “prank” was to unleash a near mythical beast on the young villain, leaving him in an impossible-to-survive situation. The young villain had yet to fully realize the true extent of his abilities and had next to no chance of escaping this situation alive. Though knowing the villain as well as his extensive plot armor, he of course survived though not unscathed and not without benefit. Though hurt, the villain was able to learn something new about not only himself but of his power. Needless to say, that was him, Bai Huiliang, not me. If canon fodder such as I were to encounter a problem even remotely similar to this, I would die. That’s my job after all. That's what I was created to do. I was made to die to further the villains' glory.
A clawed paw swiped at me, causing me to scatter away and up to my feet. There was one thing I couldn’t do here, and that was to die. I had already made up my mind at that point hadn’t I? I needed to survive and live alongside the villain, for better or for worse, he was stuck with me.
Another angered swipe came out at me, releasing a burst of wind from its claws. No matter how much I dodged I still found myself being hit with its elemental blade. Red hot liquid drenched my white robes. I had to survive but I didn’t know how. I didn’t know what I could possibly do. The area was too small and this was its territory. I was naturally at a disadvantage not to mention I wasn’t physically able. I had no weapons and no ability to use them. I had only joined the sect a day ago, I had no way of knowing what sort of spirit root I had or even how to use it.
Seemingly tired of this game of cat and mouse, the beast sent a non-lethal strike to my chest, blocking my exit and pinning me to the ground. The weight of its paw on my body made it difficult to breathe. I was now guaranteed to die one way or another, whether that be from my chest being crushed or from my lungs giving out. My hands feebly grabbed and clawed back at the beast in a desperate last ditch attempt at life, but it was useless. As my vision was beginning to blacken, a thought came to my head, and tears filled my eyes.
Bai Huiliang…
Xiao Bai…
A tear rolled down my cheek as the last of my vision went out. All sounds of struggle or torment ceased to a stop.
I never got to say goodbye.
A flash of light came across and made its way onto my vision even through my closed eyes. The rest of it was blurry. I didn’t know when but at some point the weight on my chest lifted. Two small hands gripped my own. Something wet fell on my face, dripping in slow agonizing torment, as the little hands tightened their grasp. Tears rolled down my cheeks, tears that were not my own. Straining myself, I used whatever strength I had to open my eyes. Staring right back down at me, covered in blood, was him. The corners of my mouth lifted slightly, and he seemed to cry even louder at that. Through sobs, Bai Huiliang lowered his head and whispered, “Let's go back now, Gege.”
And with that, the smaller boy held my hand and assisted me in standing up as we walked all the way back to the inner sect, leaving behind a devastated forest and a spirit beast laying dead or dying in our wake.
