Dear sister,
You must be doing well. You are back to your usual jabs, trying to make me feel guilty at the start of your letter and urging me to work hard at the end. I'm glad to know you are in good health now, but do know that what goes around comes around and you've opened the door to my own teasing.
I have mixed emotions upon hearing that you have no particular partner for the balls. On one hand, I won't have to chase away any ruffians when I return. On the other hand, how dare they not realize how great my sister is. Still, I think relief over not having to go fisticuffs with any so-called gentlemen wins out.
Time will tell about Lord Carmine, but I've come to the realization that I'll have a front row seat to find out, at least during his time at the academy. Since he'll be finishing all the catch-up work by the end of this semester, he'll start next semester in the same classes as me. If I have any updates on his progression (or lack thereof), then I'll keep you updated. I assume you'll want to know, based on the amusing rumor that I heard that you and he are dear friends.
I'm not sure why you didn't tell me you were so intimately acquainted with the academy's most recent celebrity. I'd scarce believe it's true (you've never shown such aspirations to rise in status after all), except that I heard it from Lord Carmine himself. You see, he sought me out himself, and introduced himself as your friend. And perhaps he's telling the truth and that's why you're optimistic about his chances at the dukedom. I’d also scarce believe you’d care enough to even have an opinion on his chances otherwise.
Then again, maybe I was wrong earlier. Perhaps it will come to fisticuffs with a ruffian after all. Only time will tell on that as well.
Which puts me in an awkward position. On one hand he could be a good connection for me, and eventually for the earldom. On the other hand, it could become a very bad connection if I need to thrash him for your honor. Especially if he becomes the next duke. Nevertheless, say the word and I will.
I look forward to seeing you in a couple weeks. Save a dance for me at the New Year's Ball.
Your brother who you won’t have to miss for much longer,
Alvize
