Even though it was early Spring, the weather had already started to get much warmer than it has been, causing a loud, red headed girl to bask in it, whilst swinging around a lamp post.
“Damn! I can't wait for Spring to be over, because then it means Summer!”
“Would you stop acting like a hooligan?” Arlo demanded of Junie, as I just watched on.
“It doesn’t hurt to have a bit of fun now and then, y’know.” Junie mused as she swung on the lamp post again.
Arlo shook his head and just continued walking ahead of us, I then noticed that Junie stopped swinging and came up to me.
“I wonder why he’s in such a mood.” She whispered to me.
Before I could reply, Arlo had turned around and shouted for us to get a move on.
As we approached the college gates, Junie slumped her shoulders.
“If Mr Grease ambushes me to do something, I might just start to implode. But…” She raised her fist in the air. “If I can get from point A to B quickly, Greasy won’t even touch me!”
With that in mind, Junie just rushed ahead of us, and I was about to follow her when someone grabbed hold of my arm. As I spun round, I noticed that it was Arlo who had stopped me.
“What’s the matter?” I asked him.
Letting go of my arm, he looked to the side and spoke.
“That guy from yesterday, who was he?”
Ah, he must be referring to Ichthys. In all honesty, I met him twice now? I wasn’t including him barging in either.
“He’s someone I sorta know?”
It was weird that I answered him like I was questioning myself, how on Earth would I even start to explain this? As far as I could tell, with Arlo, I don’t think he believed in the supernatural, since I remembered a few months ago that he said that it was annoying.
“Ok…”
“Why do you ask, anyway?”
Arlo turned to look at me and shrugged. “It just bugged me for some reason… Anyway, we are going to be late.” With those parting words, he strode past me, leaving me rather confuddled. As I shook my head, I jogged on after him.
When it came to lunch, we always tried to get together, and our usual spot was always under that Oak tree. Arlo got there before us, so me and Junie saw him staring up into the tree. I guessed that it was him wondering if ‘Ikky’ was up there, but I wasn’t going to say that I left him in my house. Junie took her usual spot, which was always facing the track and field, and pulled out her pen and notepad. Arlo sat down against the tree, and I made my choice to go and sit next to Junie.
“How can you even see well from this distance?” I asked as I took a seat next to her.
Junie turned to look at me and pointed at her eyes.
“I have my super eyes.”
Grinning at me, she turned to face straight on again, and I noticed that she was staring at the people on the track for a few seconds, before starting to write in her notepad. I leant over to take a peak and I saw that there, in her usual scruffy handwriting, were the words:
Number 8 has a nice butt
Junie had this odd ability, I don’t know if that was even the proper word for it. But this girl could easily tell who a man is just by seeing one bit of him. A chin? No problem. Eyes? No problem at all. Hands? Easy. It was most definitely a little weird, but I guess everyone has something they're really good at? Junie just happened to be able to do this weird trick. Although there was one other thing that she had a habit of doing, she kept ‘Man Diaries’. Diaries about every man that she has pretty much met, even some guys from the television. I’m not sure why she had them, but I sure hope that her future boyfriend doesn’t ever see any entries of him. I did, however, tell her to never go ‘public’ with those, and Junie looked at me funny, saying that I was stupid for even saying that because ‘Duh, of course I wouldn’t’!
However, it just clicked for a moment.
“Hey, Junie?”
Junie didn’t turn around, instead she kept looking straight ahead and occasionally jotting something down.
“The boy from yesterday, did you write anything about him?”
Junie stopped writing, turned to face me with a smile, and started flipping through her pad. When she stopped at a page, she then shoved it in my face. As I took the pad from her, I could see a short little paragraph that was indeed about that man.
Strange brown haired weirdo (with an even weirder name), smelt of caramel. Really pretty turquoise eyes. Felt like I wanted to wear them as a jewelled necklace, I couldn't help but notice the earring in the left ear. Called Arlo a loo, was quite funny. Should use it more often. Skin looked WAY too baby smooth, must ask him for his lotion-
I stared at what my friend wrote down about him. It was pretty much the truth, although he smelt of vanilla to me and not caramel. I handed the pad back to her.
“Thank you.”
“It’s not much, but it’s something.” Junie waved the pad in the air a little. “But it’s not the first weirdo I’ve seen. I mean, he is the weirdest.” Her head points towards the tree, where Arlo seemed to be napping.
“He’s not that weird.”
“Eh, if you say so…” Junie shrugged and went back to her ‘staring’.
Shaking my head, I stood up and went over to where Arlo was. I expected him to be awake, but I then realised that he was actually asleep. But, out of the corner of my eye, I saw something dart behind a bush, just down the hill. I was a bit bored and, since Junie was busy, and Arlo was asleep, I thought I should investigate. As I got near the bushes, I checked around them, but couldn't really see much, until the bush directly to my right started rustling, and, in a flash, something white darted out from underneath the bushes and ran towards the college’s sheds.
What on earth was that? Maybe a rabbit? But it seemed to be too fast to be a rabbit. The curiosity got the better of me, and I headed towards the sheds. The sheds themselves were like large barns, to be fair. They could’ve even been large barns to begin with but, nowadays, they were storage for all sorts of PE equipment. The door was slightly open and I couldn’t help but peek inside. I didn’t see anyone, nor this ‘rabbit’. So, slipping inside, I started to look around.
As I got further down, I started to hear a lot of rustling. I then headed towards the sound, which was right at the back, behind some poles. I came face to face to the source of the rustling sounds, but what I found was NOT what I was expecting. I doubt anyone was expecting that.
For there, in front me, was definitely not a rabbit, but instead what seemed to be a white horse who, for some reason, was upside down, with his hind legs hanging in the air. I stood there, dumbfounded, at what I was looking at. At first, I thought I was dreaming, so I had to pinch myself. But the horse was still there. Also, I noticed that it seemed to be in a bit of a pickle, as it was upside down, due to the fact that its legs were stuck in a hanging rope. I had many, many questions, but I knew one thing…
“Hang on there, I’ll give you a hand.”
As I moved closer to the horse, who had stopped struggling when it noticed me, I started to unhook the rope from its legs. When all the ropes were off the horse’s hind legs, I stepped back as the horse rolled over and got up. With it now standing upright, I could clearly make out this animal.
The horse’s fur was a solid white colour, with absolutely no markings, with a solid black colour for its mane and tail. However, one thing did stand out quite a bit, and it was the fact that this horse had red eyes, as it watched me. This horse was, indeed, an odd coloured horse, even by my standards. However, the longer I stared into those red eyes, the more I realised that there was something awfully familiar about them. Those eyes felt like a gateway to something but, as I was trying to pick at what it was, I kneeled over in pain from a sudden splitting headache. It felt like I was getting to something, but I don’t know what, and I feel like I might’ve lost whatever it could’ve been. But, as I crouched, I felt something start to nudge me and, as I looked up, I saw that the horse was rubbing its head against me.
“Thank you.”
As I was reaching out to touch the horse’s nose, I heard a loud familiar voice.
“Luce?! Where did you run off this time?!”
“I’m in here!” I called out to the voice but, as I turned to look at the horse again, I saw that it had vanished. I blinked several times, since there was evidence it was there. The hanging rope, which was still swinging around, as well as the scuffed marks on the floor. But there was absolutely no sign of this horse, and no horse that size can just vanish.
“Luce? Did you call from here?” Junie had poked her head in the shed.
“Yes, I did.” I stood up and came into her line of view.
“What were you doing in here?” She questioned me with a puzzled look on her face.
“Did you happen to see a horse?”
“A… Excuse me?” Junie raised her eyebrow.
“A horse.”
“I heard you the first time, and I’m still baffled.”
“Then maybe I did really imagine it…” I scratched my chin in thought.
“I think…” Junie put her arms round me. “The sweaty gym equipment has frazzled your brain sweetie, let's get you some fresh air.” And she led me out the shed.
I didn’t even know what to say anymore. Did I seriously just imagine that horse? If so, why? Maybe Junie was right, and I was maybe hallucinating, but why did it feel so real? And why was my head still hurting…? Too many questions, not enough answers.
