once everything that could be cleaned was and was set to dry we got to the three chest. the first chest was half full of new soap the other half was a few books and lots and lots of needle and thread for embroidery. Martha had really been looking out for me.
The second chest had two new rugs some medicine and rolls and bars for me to make tapestry to hang with little whited hooks to wedge in the stones and hang the finished tapestry. their were other crafts and odds and ends and a few books.
The final chest had bolts and bolts of fabric for me to make new dresses and under garments for years, the odd thing was that Martha had also included minstrel linens. something she knew I had never needed, I lifted them up to share with Lynda and she was vary thankful to have them. It was then that I realized this hadn’t all been for me, of course James as the keeper of me and the Key had found out that that the queen was going to be locked up with me, meaning Martha knew so had scrambled to put together as much to bolster us as possible. Martha must have known that the queen would have nothing to her name and wouldn’t fit anything I had. so knowing we had the time to make whatever we wanted had gotten us enough supply’s to keep us busy and clothed for years. Martha had alway been proper strict and formal but in this care package she had shown not only did she truly care for me but James did as well and had loosened the purse strings to the point of bleeding. tears streaked down my face as I went through all the lovely fabric.
Lynda asked “do you have a lover that dots on you? will he come and save us?”
“No nothing like that my care takers the ones hat hold our key” I pointed to the door “I think they knew you were coming here because they had to let the door be unlocked. they put together one last care package for the both of us. Like I said when I first got here there was nothing but the chests I brought. at first they sent thing like the bedroom set but soon only one small box made it to me, its been so, so long sense any thing was aloud in but sense the door was to be open and I know that the commander appreciates my quiet acceptance I think that is why we got away with this.”
“how do you know that?” she looked skeptical like making a lot of noise was a tactic she was considering
“Over the first long winter when I had only been here for a few months on a dark terribly cold night I heard him telling tails of when he was first stations here how my mad uncle had screamed and ranted slammed thing and made every noise know. It got so bad the had to get permission to start drugging his food. then the commander told all of the soldier to be thankful to me for being such an easy ward, that night they slid a hot water bladder in for me. They never talk to me but I know they are thankful to be here not on the front lines. so yes I think this was a great kindness from the commander.
One of the books was one on tailoring and dress making, I took on learning quit quickly, Linda had a mind for other things she studies the room and all the little improvement I had made approving of most, then ask if I minded her unpacking the chests. some would be hard to hid anything so I agreed as long as she didn’t use our resources with out talking to me. I was happy she had a mind to keep going so gave her what space I could the cell was large but the light was not.
first she emptied one of the chest either combining this or using the remaining storage of the book shelf. then she asked if I had a hammer and were the best light of the day was. I had no hammer but there were small rocks in the creek. With a butter knife she bent the nails out then with a rock hammered out the nails of the lid of the chest, then was aided by the wait of the lid that thundered down once detached she then tried to move the chest to the spot I told her got the most sun but I had to come help. having no idea what she was doing or way she flipped it upside down. once we brought the lid over she got the almost pure gold shaw and placed it on what I could now recognize as a make shift table and bench the gold reflected the suns light turning the whole cell a warm amber glow.
everything looked so much better with a little more light. “that is splendid can we do more of that I really like it?”
“their is plenty of gold fabric on that dress but it needs to be undone… are they really not letting us out not for a walk not for anything?”
i tilted my head little in acknowledgment “no, I don’t put furniture by the walls so I may have a better circuit to walk and I wake early so I may do the exercise dills when they do. In this darkness if you stop moving it will consume you.”she looked so disheartened “still better then by my brothers side I wager?”
“I fear you are right, what if he remembers me?” she had a fear deep in her being that was un natural to her nature it just looked wrong in her spirit.
I had been thinking and ventured my best guess for the events she had divulged “oh I think it would be hard for him to forget you. he needs an hair a real one and as long as you are married that can only come from you… however it’s said he dislikes the idea of an hair and that is why your marriage was put off so long you were betrothed before birth yes?” she nodded “he has made it known that far too many people speak ill of him and would quickly put him in here and make his child a king just as he as he was made king early when the old king died. So with you safely tucked away here, he is free to keep his thrown. the court will try and get you brought back but I think if they try to hard he may take it as them saying he should be replaced.”
“I don't know if that’s reassuring or frightening.” she contemplated as she removed a large emerald.
