Navien was a Nightling, The Nightlings were a group of sorcerers that served the Spire of Shadows. A mysterious tower in the kingdom of Ealcot, the tower granted them their magic and taught them about themselves. In return they brought to it news and secrets of the world, and also convinced others to make a pilgrimage to the spire to learn about themselves through it.
The Nightlings were once called by others the Cult of Shadows and considered a dangerous element of the world. After a few years of showing they were neutral and non-aggressive, the name was repealed and they were named a legitimate faction of Elgicin. When Navien was but a child, his clan of dark elves were massacred by The Order of Lightway and later he, the sole survivor, was taken in by the Nightlings. It is there where he found his new family, his mentor, and became a shadow sorcerer.
Now though, none of those were with them. He and his master had gone on a mission to investigate this place, which the tower had told them was in danger of being burned away. They’d tried to investigate but once they got close Navien had to watch his only parental figure in the world die. It was a miracle he had gotten away. Soon after, Lightway soldiers started chasing him. They had been informed of his presence suspiciously fast, which is why Navien was now following Damien to see what he was up to.
Navien was out of power at the moment so he had to rely on keeping to the shadows to follow Damien. Darting from building to building Navien kept a street away from the soldier as they walked with a clear destination in mind. They strode with confidence to a church.
Walking around the fence Navien watched through the bars as Damien walk around the yard to a back entrance. Knocking, a figure opened the door, short, a gnome or a halfling perhaps, wearing priest robes with some golden pauldrons, so perhaps higher ranked. The two conversed, with the shorter figure patting Damien’s arm forgivingly but then stopping. Spotting something in the distance, spotting Navien. He ducked quickly under a bush hoping he wasn’t seen. After a few minutes he began to walk away thinking hard about what he saw.
Passing people who gave him curious glances, some mothers pulling their children closer. He sighed and pulled his hood over his elven ears. As the sun began to finish setting he reached the Sleepy Lyre. He opened the door and walked past some of the patrons having dinner in the lobby. he started to walk up the stairs to his and his master’s— his suite, but he was suddenly stopped as the innkeeper picked up their staff and slammed it against the wall blocking his way.
“Ah-bup-bup! Your rent’s due.” the wizened old halfling looked up at Navien with a whiskered sneer.
Navien paled as he patted down what little he had, his mentor had all the funds for the mission. 1 silver and 9 copper, the innkeeper clicked his tongue twice as he shook his head.
Half an hour later Navien was outside on the street again with his pack, but also with his master’s pack. He could’ve sold some of the things in it, but it was one of the last things he had of his master, and besides he was getting a bit tired of the city.
He headed south to a wooded shelf of the cliffs he had seen a path to when entering. As he walked down the streets he noticed the unique electrical lights of the city come on all at once. The sun had completely dipped over the top of the canyon’s ridge, and the cities lights had come on to repel the darkness.
