That room had old and dusty decorations, causing Mephistopheles to sneeze about three times before he went to ward off the wave of slaps that Mine was giving Addai, who didn't fight back. Meanwhile, Zophiel was looking for ways to get them out of there with his unorthodox master key using the "Asmodeus' pocket edition" artifact.
With the keychain placed on the nearest wall, it lightly shuddered and... nothing else. The angel found it strange but tried again, only to receive the same result. It seemed that the gears of the mysterious system that made Agarath's illusions work were jammed.
Testing it on another wall, Zophiel obtained the same result. His doubt about the keychain’s usefulness grew, despite its previous reliability in navigating Agarath’s illusions. The keychain seemed to read the angel's thoughts and soon began to squeak desperately. When the angel tied the keychain on his belt, it stopped squeaking.
Zophiel approached the group, carefully avoiding the thick dust on the carpet, and shook his head in frustration.
"The keychain is useless here," Zophiel said, his voice tinged with defeat.
"Then… are we trapped here?" Mine asked, ignoring Addai's apologetic pose.
"Not exactly," Mephistopheles looked around. "I've seen places like this in Mammon's Mansion in Hell. They call it 'Casino Roulette' or something like this shit," he shrugged when Addai frowned at the name of it.
The group looked at Mephistopheles, waiting for further explanations and details. Mephistopheles sighed and waved for them to follow him to a specific blank wall he randomly chose from the four walls in that room.
The demon patted the blank wall twice. "This wall is the main mechanism. It's plain blank, suitable to be the space you wait for the roulette to stop while watching it do its thing, ya know," Mephistopheles mimicked someone playing with casino machines, only Zophiel let out a faint, muffled chuckle. "Anyway, there's usually a handle somewhere..."
Mephistopheles looked around, but, as expected, the wall and its surroundings were plain, devoid of any distinguishing features or furniture, just stark white paint. No furniture near it. Addai frowned and looked at the demon. Something important missed the proper clarification.
"With what will we pay the 'machine?'" Addai asked, watching Mine look for the handle on the nearest shelf.
"Ah, my bad," Mephistopheles took a blue handkerchief from his pockets. "With money, of course."
Mephistopheles pinched two corners of the napkin and blew it like a musical leaf. It even sounded like one!
The acute sound soon sounded like a balloon being inflated. What before seemed to be just any tissue, when you blew it, it inflated like a balloon and shaped itself into a fanny pack. The fanny pack was the same color as the handkerchief. The only difference was that it looked heavy and full.
Mephistopheles opened the zipper and took a smaller bag out of it. There were coins with different inscriptions than the young teachers were used to. The coins were thinner than regular coins and had distinct colors.
Mephistopheles took three of the greater and most vibrantly colored coins and pressed them against the wall. An instant opening sucked the coin and closed as soon as the coin was processed. A "congratulations-like" song rang, and party poppers popped confetti on the startled group.
The crank appeared right where Mine was searching through the drawers of the only dresser in that room. The young professor took the item and gave it to Mephistopheles, who patted the wall with the item until he found the automatic fit.
With the crank suitably positioned, a coin slot appeared next to it, as if it was waiting for more and more coins to be inserted and praying for the players' bad luck.
"Voilà!" Mephistopheles proudly posed next to the crank.
"You did a good job," Zophiel smiled and cupped Mephistopheles's cheeks with both hands.
Mephistopheles lost the sequence of his actions when the angel cupped his cheeks and smiled warmly. Mephisto_pheles. exe had stopped for a while, and his system had overheated - blushed cheeks telling he still had a heart. And Mephistopheles not only had a heart, but his heart was admiring through his eyes the beauty of his beloved, and he couldn't help but daze at Zophiel.
But it didn't last long, once the judging eyes of the young professors were starting to dig holes in his back. So, Mephistopheles coughed and broke eye contact with his beloved, who chuckled and pinched his reddish ears before heading to the "machine's" handle - leaving the demon rebooting Mephisto_pheles. exe.
"Who has good luck?" Zophiel chuckled and patted the handle. "My luck with gambling is awful so... It's better if some of you try it first hehe..." he grinned, scratching his neck.
"I can try," Mine touched the handle and turned it.
As Mephistopheles had explained earlier, the walls soon began to turn like a large gambling machine. The first wall displayed a cheerful decoration and exuded an air of tranquility. The second wall featured a more precarious decoration. The third wall opened to a dark corridor resembling the Catacombs they had just left. And, as if the enormous luck of having ended up in a room like that wasn't enough, the same noises from the eyeless demons came from the dark corridor!
Quickly, Mephistopheles inserted more coins into the holder, and Addai pulled the handle. The walls moved again. One stopped in a luxurious decoration with luxurious refinements, the second stopped in the same decoration as the first, and the third stopped in what looked like a bathroom.
"You guys are terrible," Mephistopheles grumbled, inserting more coins into the "machine."
At least one of the walls needed to lead to some corridor, preferably one that wasn't suspicious or dangerous like the one Addai got to a Spider Den later. If they managed to win the jackpot combo it would be perfect. A jackpot combination would lead to the main hall and chamber of that establishment's owner. However, not even four brains and three luck combined could produce a satisfactory combination.
Most of the walls led to a simple decorated wall. The corridors? There were several of them, and he always gave off an aura of danger as soon as they stared at them too much or screamed "death." Only the Spider Den had shown up three times in a row!
Mephistopheles' hands were already impatient, and he kept huffing and puffing as he put more and more coins into the "machine." He was likely to run out of coins and still be unable to get out of there. Imagining it, the demon even thought about praying for his King to bless the following gambling turn. Everybody had tried, and everybody got nothing but trashy rooms and dangerous situations... but there was somebody who hadn't tried yet. Things wouldn't get worse anyway, it was worth the risk.
"Sweetness, I think you should try it," Mephistopheles inserted one more coin into the machine, tensing a little about it.
"... Are you sure?" Zophiel asked, uncertain.
"It can't be worse than opening the corridors to the Catacombs," Mine sighed, defeated.
"Or opening the gates to a Spider Den," Addai shivered, scratching his arms.
Zophiel didn't know whether to laugh or cry. He reached for the handle and took a deep breath before pulling it down. The walls, already exhausting, rotated again. Previous combinations appeared, but they didn't stop. That could be a good sign! However, Zophiel and the rest of the group didn't seem excited, fearing that this new combination slowly forming was another misfortune.
Addai kept his eyes fixed on the wall leading to the Spider Den. Mine had his eyes fixed on the wall that led to yet another empty decoration, convinced they would have bad luck again. Mephistopheles no longer looked at the walls, already separating more coins to insert into the machine while grumbling under his breath.
Unlike the others, Zophiel felt a brief euphoria when he saw that one of the walls was stopping at the opening of a corridor that had the same decoration as that room. The keychain around his waist also seemed to share the sentiment and vibrated a little when the walls stopped.
The wall of the left led to the Spider Den, no surprise here and for Addai's fright. The wall in the middle had a generic office wall decoration, no surprise either. However, the wall on the right led to a corridor with the same decoration of that room they were!
Mephistopheles almost dropped his pennies when he saw they finally got something decent! Well, one of the five coins in his hand ended up falling to the floor, which an opening sucked it into the machine. The demon began to step on the same place where his precious coin of highest value was sucked, cursing as Zophiel put the coin purse in Mephistopheles' fanny pack.
Addai was glued to Mine and kept glancing at the corridor of the Spider Den. When the first spider came out, he got goosebumps and dragged Mine towards the promising corridor. If he was a cat, he'd be all fuzzy like Umbra when she hissed off fright!
Noticing Mine and Addai's moves, as well as the closing doors to the new corridor, Zophiel quickly grabbed Mephistopheles by his collar and dragged the confused demon towards the young professors. They barely had time to pass the closing doors, leaving a crushed spider split in half. Mephistopheles cold sweated when he saw the spider because he could've been crushed like that if his beloved hadn't acted fast.
Mine, a little dazed and confused by the sudden pull, stared at his friend, who looked as pale as porcelain. "Are you afraid of spiders?" He asked, in disbelief.
"And insects in general," Addai shivered.
Mine crossed his arms and looked into Addai's eyes. "What will you do if we see the mother of these spiders outside the nest?"
"I'd rather not think about it," Addai massaged his temples, trying to dispel any imagination of this unlikely unfortunate encounter.
"Boys, be quiet," Zophiel whispered, touching the boys' shoulders. "Agarath's Puppets are hanging on the ceiling."
