1st Day, 2nd Semester
My lower mouth hangs open. If it weren't for the deafening sound of the chair scraping the floor—due to my classmate's laziness in lifting it—I wouldn't snap it out.
'Be careful what you wish for.' I should have taken this saying more seriously when we were talking earlier. But how would I know that the person whom we met on the bar would appear right in front of us. Not just appear but will even be our professor this semester!
If time machine existed, I would leap back to time and stop myself from saying crap such as, 'Who knows, he might be our professor.'
Actually, no! Scratch that, if time machines really do exist, I would leap back to that time when we went to the bar! It was a foolish decision. Just remembering the reason why we went there gives me a headache!
My mind can't help but wander back to end of 1st semester. To be more precise, it was two weeks before the 1st semester ends...
"Hey! Seriously, what's with you?" I stopped myself from reaching the frozen vegetable mix right in front of me. I look over my shoulder and check my two friends who where behind me.
"What's with them?" I asked mainly to myself, but my other friend, Anne, who's beside me, heard me and answered, "Don't mind them. Just their usual banter."
I chuckled and returned my eyes to the frozen good I was about to get. I checked a couple of pack before deciding which one to put in our shared cart. As I put in what I'm holding, I large bag of chips also went in. I might add that it was 'flying' as it went in.
I looked in the direction of our friends—who's still busy with their banter—they were the ones who threw these bags of chips.
"Are you going to buy all of this?" I asked, which thankfully reached their ears as they answered 'Yes" to me.
I gave a nod and asked another question: "What are you arguing about now?" I started pushing the cart which signalled everyone to start moving.
"Shei keeps on insisting on the purple one. It's so gross, and it leaves a lasting smell on the breath," Jade answered while lightly pushing Shei on her left shoulder.
"I'm just curious about the taste, okay? And it's not like I'm going to give you one!" Shei answered back while elbowing Jade. Playfully.
"Just get both," Anne pitch in between the two.
"No! It's a waste of money. Aren't we on a budget?" I looked at Jade with a frown. "Budget?" I asked as I gesture my hand on our nearly full cart.
"W-well, we already toned it down," she said on defensive. I laugh at her while shaking my head.
"We don't need to tone it down." I said and continued to push the cart. "Only if you don't want to go to the bar anymore."
"NO!" We all looked at Shei after she said that in a loud voice. Nearby staff and grocery shoppers looked our way. She immediately covered her mouth as if it could erase the noise she made.
"If you want us to go, then stop wasting money. We already set a budget for it," said Jade as she lightly pushed Shei with both her hands, signaling her to start moving already.
"But are we really going? I mean, yes, we already plan everything and even set a budget for it, but are you all sure about it already?" Anne asked as we continue to circle around the frozen good section.
"Well, personally, whether we go or not, I wouldn't really mind. I'm just going because you guys are going," I said while my eyes are busy browsing the frozen goods.
"Come on, guys! Don't tell me your changing your minds now? We already planned everything! From transportation to funds, to our chaperone, to the place where we are staying after. Everything is already settled!" Shei reminded us.
"Not everything, since we still haven't decided on the clothes yet," I said, as it was still one of the things we hadn't done.
"But we already have a plan for that on Friday. We're going to buy dress!" Shei said.
"We do," I simply said then grab a 1kg of frozen fries.
"Shei, calm down," Anne said. She stopped at her place, making everyone of us follow. "I'm not backing out or anything. I'm just making sure everyone is okay with it. After all, none of us really had an experience going to bar."
"Except you," Jade added after what Anne said. "Remind me again why you want us to go there?"
"I just want us to experience it all together. It was fun! It's a totally different experience from our usual hanging out at different types of restaurants. And considering how busy we might be in the upcoming semester, I think this is the only time we can experience it."
"Fair point." I look at Shei before continuing, "But let me remind you again, I won't drink any alcoholic beverages." Just the thought of having a hangover and vomitting makes me shiver already. I often see those scenarios from my family members, so I definitely don't want to experience them.
"Yes, of course! There's a lot of drinks and foods there! Although they are more likely snacks, they can still fill the belly."
"Okay, enough of that. We should go the checkout counter already, Lhia might clear all of the freezers here."
"What?" I asked innocently. I barely get anything myself; these are mostly for my family. My mother asked me to buy these when she heard that we were in the mall's supermarket.
"Let's go, let's go!" Jade ignored me and started marching towards the nearest counter. I had no choice but to follow them. I was done buying anyway.
When we reached the end of the line at counter 3, we started sorting the items in the cart. It was already sorted to begin with, as I separated them earlier when we were putting things in the cart. I told them to pay first for their's as it was fewer than mine.
While they were busy putting everything on the counter top, I looked around to see if there was anything that I might want to buy. My eye's stopped on the aisle of the powdered milk section near to the counter where we are. I slightly tilt my head when I see a familiar image standing there.
"Kuya?" (big brother in Filipino)
"Ha? Your kuya?" I heard Anne asking me, but I was so busy trying to avoid the people passing by. I continued to move my head left to right and vice versa, just to make sure I saw correctly.
"Is your brother here?" Anne asked again.
"I think? I saw him there, but..." I looked around after all the people passing by disappeared. "...but he's not there anymore."
"Are you sure it's him? Why won't you call him? So, you can go home together. You have these things with you." Anne pointed out the remaining items in the cart that we have.
"Yeah...but..." I frowned a little. "I think he's with a girl."
"A girl?"
"Yeah, there arms are link together." I said, pushing the cart forward. I started putting my items on the counter top.
"His girlfriend?"
"Maybe? I don't know. He never introduces someone." Well, regardless if it is his girlfriend or not, it's better not to ride with him. He's my evil brother, after all.
