The Shattered Infinity

Prologue Part 1

Prologue Part 1

Jul 07, 2024

All that could be heard for miles around above all of the other noise of the city is the massive KABOOM as several rockets impact and explode on contact with the side Freedom Plaza. The Chinese soldiers bombarded the building with missiles in the attempt to collapse it down upon the American soldier who had been, up until that point, decimating their forces. Currently he was held in place using the Earth manipulation powers of Colonel Xiao Hi Wu. As the shrapnel from the explosions and chunks of the building started to fly off in other directions some of it ended up piercing many of the Chinese soldiers firing at the building.

The American that they were trying to have the building collapse upon was actually able to free himself as chunks of the metal from both the rockets and the now collapsing building had broke his restraints. Once free he immediately moved to get out of the way as the building came toppling down. Several soldiers fired at him as they saw him escape and start moving to safety. However as the building collapsed around him it almost seemed to protect him from the bullets flying his way.

Colonel Xiao watched in shock as these events didn't make sense, but somehow worked in the favor of his enemy. By the time his senses came back to him and the shock had left him, he saw the soldier he worked so hard to pin down leaping towards him knife at the ready. The only thing that saved the Colonel from a knife to the skull was a blast of water with enough force it not the American into a nearby wall.

Looking back he saw his chosen spouse, handpicked by his superiors, coming to his aid. Sergeant Suu Long Lee continued calling upon the nearby water from the nearby sea since they work close to the harbor together and fire off more large compacted blasts of compressed water. What she did not expect was for her enemy to be quick enough to dodge them.

As he rushed to closing on them once more he effortlessly maneuvered weaving for attacks, and some of her missed attacks struck her own people. One such blast ended up causing one soldier to fling his firearm in the direction of the American. Almost instinctually he was able to catch it and start firing off in her direction.

This action caused her husband to react and bring up a wall of stone and brick from the rubble of some of the buildings to protect her. Although the wall that kept her safe also now blocked her view of the enemy which was what the American was hoping for.

Before a couple more shots at the Colonel himself, who in return put up another stone wall to protect himself. But in that brief moment of doing so he signed his own death warrant as the American capitalized on his lack of sight of his enemies current position to grab a frag grenade from one of the now unconscious Chinese soldiers and threw it in the direction of the Sergeant while he moved closer to the Colonel. The Colonel heard the fragmentation grenade and his reflexes were fast enough for him to create a dome around it to protect his wife, but as he looked in the direction of the grenade he did not have enough time to see as his enemy closed in from the other side and plunge the knife into the side of his skull.

As the Colonel fell dead on the ground, The grenade went off causing the dome around it to explode outward but with only enough force to scatter the rocks and kick up some dirt. However that cloud of dirt allowed for the American to use it as a smoke screen to maneuver through it as the Sergeant tried to get her bearings on what was going on. By the time she had a good view of what was happening she saw her husband laying on the ground dead with a knife in his skull. When she tried to see where her enemy was she heard him behind her as he had closed the distance enough to get a perfect clean head shot. She looked him in the eyes right as he pulled the trigger and scattered her brains across the battlefield.

As her body hit the ground the Chinese soldiers in the distance that saw the battle but were unable to assist began radioing back to there leaders that there too strongest superhumans were just killed. They try to get orders for what to do next but in that instance the American picked up a grenade from off the bodies of one of the unconscious soldiers and through a directly in their direction. As it did needed all that could be heard was the screams of the dying soldiers before nothing but static.

By this time the American who had fought so valiantly stood at the harbor catching only a glimpse of his mostly destroyed face mask helmet that protected him seeing half of his face exposed and his long white curly hair blowing in the breeze as a result. He took it off realizing it was basically garbage at that point showing a clear view of his now blooded and exhaustive to face.

As he looked at the reflection of his face in the water of the surrounding harbor all he conceived was his bright red eyes. Then suddenly he feels a hand on his shoulder and hears a woman calling his name snapping him out of the memory and back into the present day.

"Max?"

Dr Maxwell Sinclair looks around and sees his wife Alejandra next to him with her hand on his shoulder in concern as he was looking into the pool in their backyard. He smiled to nervously while tucking some of his long white hair behind his ear. He apologized for spacing out, "Sorry Honey.... Just had a lot on my mind for a moment."

She placed both hands on her hips and lean down to give him a very aggressive stare, "I told you no thinking about work on your days off. Do you want to be eating Teresa's cooking tonight?"

He put his hands up defensively and truthfully stated, "I wasn't. Just was remembering a moment from when I was younger. Got lost and thought thinking about it is all."

She being a trained doctor and psychologist is able to quickly deduce given how he's acting in the expression he had while spacing out that whatever memory he was having was not a good one. In order to try and comfort him she wrapped her arms around and leaned over him from behind the chair he was sitting in. She kissed him on the forehead with her large lips.

"Sometimes it's better too not think about the past especially when the things you remember only bring you pain. It's your day off Max.... If you don't relax and try to enjoy yourself on your days off I'm going to stress yourself into an early grave."

He held on to her arms as they wrapped around his upper torso. He let out a deep sigh and said, "I know you are right. This gets hard sometimes to not think about all these things after everything. But I think God everyday having you all here with me."

He slowly stood up and walked to the edge of the pool to dip his feet in. The pool was no deeper than three feet because he could not swim but he enjoyed the idea of relaxing by a nice pool while watching his kids play in it. Although his children were too young to properly make use of the pool they were beginning swimming lessons with his second wife, Grey. Maxwell was not your typical American but then again who is any more these days. The current year was 2095 and people with superpowers have been the norm for a long time. Entire nations have collapsed and been reborn in the last couple decades.

The word normal I really didn't have much meaning nowadays. After all Max was a worshipper of the Dark One. As such his lifestyle was anything but normal. Yet in comparison to others who also follow his God his lifestyle was a little bit more tame. He of course was a polygonist with currently three wives and four children. One of which was adopted. Not to mention two girlfriends and one fiance. Although growing up he never thought he would have himself a harem of beautiful women life just played out that way for him especially since all of them worshiped his God and such a situation is normal for servants of the Dark One.

He was also engaged currently to his soon to be fourth wife and long time friend. Max's life was anything but ordinary even from a young age. The story of Maxwell Sinclair is a story of a man trying to defy a fate and break a repeating cycle that he only barely knows exists.

Of course to understand that story you need to start from the beginning which would normally be his birth, but in this situation it would be better to start with his earliest memory. That was the day of his Uncle Emmanuel's funeral.

It had been raining for almost 3 weeks in the city of New Orleans where he was born and raised. 3 weeks ago his uncle was killed during an attack on New Orleans by a group of super villains known as, the Lords of Dusk. In the destruction of the battle between the supervillain group and the world's best superhero team, the Independent Superhero Alliance aka the ISA. I have both groups were defeated by each other. Half some members of each group died in the fighting, as initially the Lords of Dusk came to expose one of the members of the ISA who at the time was the king of the world, literally.

The crimes of the Tyrant King Gabriel Blackknife were exposed to the entirety of the Earth and beyond to the rest of the galactic community. What was worse is that he was directly responsible for the creation of the Lords of Dusk in the first place as his many acts of tyranny and evil are what pushed the members of this supervillain organization into following the paths that they did. Either to save their loved ones, get justice for the wrongs committed against them, or to bring down the tyrant. Upon revealing his sins to the world Gabriel's own team that he put together to play hero with turned against him. Including his own younger brother who would take his place after he was defeated and slain.

Initially when the fighting had stopped, people thought that the two groups would bury the hatchet and try and work together going forward. However it wasn't even more than him minute or two after things had ended that the leader of the Lords of Dusk decided to try and end all the members of the ISA and begin his conquest of the world. Although initially most of his team did not want to fight The simple fact that he had insinuated that they would be fighting was enough to cause confusion amongst everyone.

Foolishly members of the ISA charged into attack thinking that the entire group was about two try and kill them due to previous instances where many of them did. This caused for the actual more peaceful members of the Lords of Dusk to have to fight for their lives. Although the hero's actions were understandable it was only in hindsight that those who survived the battle realized their mistake.

When the dust heads settled, the Tyrant King had been slain for his crimes and half the members of the two greatest superpowered groups in the world fighting for both good and evil laid dead. Along with them half of the city of New Orleans lay in ruin with many of the people that called it home dead. One of those people was Maxwell's uncle, who in the chaos have been impaled through the chest and his heart was destroyed.

Emmanuel was not the only family member Maxwell lost that day. Because after the fighting had ended his mother chose to abandon him and his father. Leaving them behind she disappeared never to be seen again.

As Maxwell and his family laid his uncle to rest in the family cemetery not that far away from his grandfather's mansion just a five-minute drive outside of the city limits of New Orleans; Max recalled for the first time who he was as an individual. This was his earliest memory. It was the memory that was the strongest for him. The reminder that death was real on one day everyone dies.

Despite being his earliest memory the next few weeks after that funeral will mostly a blur to him. He remembers his grandparents being so grief stricken and heartbroken that they barely noticed him for a while. His father was so torn up that he didn't really want to do it himself after losing his brother and his wife leaving him. He remembers hearing his father and his grandfather arguing a lot during that time while they thought he was sleeping.

It ultimately culminated in Maxwell's father going away to find a way to be able to take care of Max on his own while his grandparents took care of him in the meantime. And this started the first major period in Maxwell's life. His childhood with his grandparents.

3 months had passed after Maxwell's father had left, but to make sure to call once a week to check on Max. He told him often how much he loved him and how he couldn't wait for them to have their own home. But on this day after talking to his father on my phone Max's grandfather decided to do something to get out of the house. So he called off all of his important business for the day and made sure to dress Max in something nice.

The two boys would be going out on a stroll through the city. His grandmother helped him get dressed and once he was she helped him down the stairs where his grandfather took him by the hand and they began to walk. Instead of driving into town the two enjoyed a nice stroll along the road that led into the city from the mansion.

As they walked across New Orleans, Maxwell was full of questions as it was the first time he got to actually spend time with his grandpa doing something other than being sad about his uncle. The first question he asked was about the floating cars he saw.

"Grandpa, why are those cars flying off the ground?"

Logan looked at his grandson and answered with a smile, "A friend of your uncle's made them. He decided to let people be able to buy them. People use them to drive around or fly around. Grandpa thought about getting one for himself, but I don't think I can learn how to drive it right. Besides I trust my own two legs more. Maybe when you're older you can get on with my grandpa around in it."

Max was in awe of the dozens of flying cars as they walked down the roads. Eventually they reach the first starting place and that Logan wanted to take him, ISA Park. Paid for by the members of the ISA to help the people of New Orleans have a safe and beautiful place in which to have fun relax and spend time with their families. Normally with how much is here that it has to offer people it would be considered a park for a upper middle class if not rich families type neighborhood. But it was open to all of the public out of New Orleans.

Maxwell Leonidas Roberto Sinclair is a complicated man who has struggled for a long time finding his place in the world and trying to understand who he really is. From his mother abandoning him and his father shortly after the death of his uncle in a traumatic event when he was only 4 years old; to the culture shock of moving out of high society and into lower middle class suburban life. Not to mention his own struggles with his racial identity, as being an African American man with some Hispanic heritage as well but feeling outcast and in opposition with both.

Maxwell has dealt all his life with loss and trying to find a reason to keep going despite it. Struggling with his own self-worth and ability to love not only himself but others; his life has never been simple. Especially in this world of superpowers, magic, monsters, and aliens. In a world where angels and demons literally walk amongst mankind, and humanity is now a part of a intergalactic community of allied solar systems. And worst of all is his desire to live up to the legacy of his favorite superhero while being born just a normal human with no powers and a fractured psyche that has created other personalities that he struggles to control.

Can Maxwell truly find himself and his place in the world? Can he achieve his dream and live up to the legacy of his favorite hero despite his lack of powers and other shortcomings? Or will he just fall to the waist side forgotten by the world as he succumbs to his broken mind and darker thoughts?
