Rage & Shade

Chapter 5 (1)

Chapter 5 (1)

Jul 09, 2024

Lilika and her party walked with purpose to the church. All the people at noon were going out for strolls and shopping. As the party reached the church most people were leaving the morning service many looked at their crew with curiosity some with suspicion when they saw Navien.

As they opened the doors they found Damien and his soldiers talking to a high-ranking gnome priest, around them were many other robed figures moving boxes.

“Layvma Beamcrosser I’m afraid we must talk about an incident that occurred at one of your Warehouses with your authorization,” Makith said to the high priest.

“Oh and what incident was this that occurred?” She said calmly as she motioned for the other clerics to go about their work.

“I told you not to interfere in the business of this city, Shadekin!” Damien yelled to Navien.

“It is you who is interfering, We’ve been sent by the city to find those who were causing the burnouts. We found evidence that weapons based on them were developed and experimented on citizens of the city in a warehouse owned by you. We also found your authorization for it,” Yorna proclaimed.

Lilika positioned herself in between Damien and Navien. With her ax in her hand she wasn’t afraid to defend Navien.

“There were boxes, Damien, boxes of corpses. She’s killed hundreds of citizens of the city, innocents that your order preaches they protect,” She said to him.

“How dare you slander the church of Soralis, worshipers of the sun and the light. They have done such good for this city even perhaps saved it,” He shouted back. Though he seemed to falter momentarily at her certainty.

“Yes how dare you demonize our action.” Layvma said calmly and coldly as she began stepping down from the pedestal at the end of the hall.

“Yes, how dare you demo– the… actions” Damien stuttered looking down confused as Layvma walked past him.

Some of his soldiers wavered as they looked around noticing all the clerics of the temple disappeared somewhere while they were focused on the adventurers. Most looked to Damien for orders, while he stood there staring at Layvma with confusion on his face.

“Light should never be hidden and shadows should never be forgiven. Our actions to rid this world of those with shadows over their hearts is the will of the gods, to slander it, is to slander them.”  Layvma said becoming less orderly with every sentence.

“Damien, she’s admitting to what she did, how can you stand for this?” Drinial said to him.

“N-No the light, it’s supposed to–” Damien started to stutter.

“You have sworn to bring light to this land through any means possible Damien Havic, you won’t forsake that oath, your life, now would you.” Layvma said to him coldly.

Damien looked down as the warhammer in his hands dropped down with it.

“Damien, is your oath to the light, or to your people?” Navien said to him with a pleading look in his eye.

Damien glanced at him then back down. For a beat he was silent, and staring hard at the tiles, then he rose. He hefted his warhammer back into his hands and turned to stare hard at the adventurers. As Lilika started to worry he had chosen the cult’s side he turned back around to Layvma and yelled out,

Past the halfway point of the series! I probably should've mentioned this is a short story, I'll make sure to add that to the tags!
