On the other side of the school, already in class Anastacia and Carol are sitting side by side, the leader of the group is the only one stressing about her plan, Carol is absent-mindedly scrolling through her phone. Mrs Diaz is in the beginning of an explanation, Anastacia can't seem to focus, her leg shaking a little with all the anxiety she feels, she turns to Carol and whispers.
"Did the Gossip At Saint Damian post anything else? L-like maybe Iara gave an interview or something?" Carol doesn't hide the pity she feels when she looks at Anastacia.
"They are probably scrambling to find a way to do a whole party in less than a week or something, and no, they didn't do an interview... because who the fuck would conduct the interview?"
Anastacia agrees and makes her best effort to take notes and actually pay attention to what the teacher says, she doesn't, her mind is completely focused on what Iara could be doing, if the plan actually made her feel bad, she rethinks every single small action Iara did looking for any kind of hint that the girl was affected. Anastacia saw the conversation between losers at lunch, a guy Josh knows as Andrew and the two girls, her theory is that they are going to plan the anniversary together because the two couldn't possibly be able to do an actual celebration of the school without help. The cheerleader spends the whole class waiting for something to happen, maybe some news, but the silence makes her feel even worse.
"I'm telling you, she would have found a way to clap back by now! Trust me!" Anastacia met Josh on their way to the field, Carol rushed to help the teacher with her stuff, and just like their Brazilian friend, Josh also seems pretty confident that she is overreacting.
"Honey, it's been less than two hours since you gave them the news, they wouldn't have time to do anything, you spent three hours doing those posters if they are gonna do anything it's gonna take a while." Josh thought it was a joke when Anastacia told him that she learned to photoshop just to do the posters, but when she took out a hundred of those from her bag he started to believe it.
"I know Iara, she doesn't take a long time thinking about stuff. She just does it!" Anastacia says with a lot more emotion than she expected, making Josh give her a confused look before saying.
"Since when do you know her? You had like, four interactions with her, and you said you couldn't learn anything from spending the day at her house. so we basically know the same person."
Anastacia forgot that she told them all she learned was that Iara was "a bitch, a terrible person to work with, a bitch and an annoying piece of shit, so nothing new", even though Iara was awful to her she is not going to tell her secret to other people. She sighs before beginning her explanation.
"When we made them be isolated from the school there was an immediate retaliation, then in less than a week she tried to accuse me of doing drugs, and she was very confrontational when we were working together." Josh seems a little more convinced when he opens the door to the fields.
"Fine, but you have to admit you are a little on edge right?" She doesn't answer his question and just gives him a quick goodbye when she meets with the cheerleaders and he goes to his football team.
Most of the girls are already stretching and seem to be in a nice conversation, Carol is one of them, somehow having arrived here first, all the girls stop talking when Anastacia approaches, they all feel a sense of respect to their captain, usually they would actually stay quiet, but Anastacia sees that they all feel a little bubbly, some of them can't hold the serious face and some smiles keep creeping in their faces, they seem very eager to talk about something, Anastacia assumes it's because of the anniversary and just begins the training.
"Ladies! I have to leave early today again, and because of that we aren't really going to be able to do everything I wanted, but we can do the beginning of our routine because Charlie, Olivia and Carol haven't been able to throw us up at the right time, and we need to train that, God is the only perfect being, but we are going to be the perfect team of cheerleaders!" She smiles at the team and she can feel the respect of the people around her which makes her forget about Iara for a little bit.
The feeling of focusing on something else doesn't last long, for the first time it's not her own mind bringing something Iara did, her voice or her body it's the other people, while they are training the people resting are gossiping about "The Hellgirl Scissor'' and the audacity she had to steal the preparation from the Trio, Anastacia doesn't really like the way they are talking about her, the first one hour is completely predictable, they dislike Iara's tattoos, her arrogance, her face, everything about her. When they finally take a break everyone is resting under the bleachers and the topic is still Iara.
"Oh and did you hear? Hellgirl and Scissors got into a fight! They probably broke up!" Olivia's laugh after talking sounds like a hyena but Anastacia ignores that as she asks, interrupting the conversation the other girl was having with Carol.
"I'm sorry, Iara and Lily fought? Do you know why?" Anastacia keeps her voice neutral trying no to show all the curiosity she feels burning in her body. Olivia, a blonde girl with hair that goes a little over her shoulder and white skin with pink undertones looks back at Anastacia smiling.
"Yeah! The scissors shoved Gabriel in a locker talking about how the hellgirl doesn't accept when she is wrong, and she refuted that by saying the scissors only comes up with terrible ideas, then scissors called her the c-word and I swear to god hellgirl almost hit her right then and there, but she told her to fuck off and left. I didn't know those kinds of people were aggressive like that." Olivia finishes her sentence sounding scared but her face shows that she is very pleased at the unfortunate situation occurring to "those people"
"Oh why did they fight?" Anastacia doesn't even know why she asks, but she is very invested in this story, the answer to her question doesn't come from Olivia, but Carol.
"Gabriel heard they were talking about a party in Lily's house, so it's probably because of the anniversary they decided to organize." Olivia deflates, feeling robbed of some good gossip, while Anastacia gives a puzzled look to her friend. If Carol knew this information, why didn't she tell her first.
Anastacia doesn't waste a moment to think about this, she immediately calls Carol for a "1v1 sesh" which is how Anastacia calls the time anyone from the team needs some kind of specific training, but with Carol it always means that they need some privacy to share secrets, Anastacia is not only curious why she is only hearing this information now, but also expecting some amount of special information from her friend. They walk aways from the cheerleaders and while Anastacia begins organizing all the equipment the cheerleaders need.
"So... I have been crazy thinking about what Iara will do... and you knew she was fighting with Lily and didn't say anything?" Carol grabs two towels and answers without looking Anastacia in the eye.
"I assumed you already knew, I was just coming back from the bathroom and heard the freshman talking about it." She shrugs while drinking from her water bottle, leaving Anastacia even more confused. The captain of the cheerleaders sits in one of the benches quickly checking her phone to see if it's already time to go to Iara's house.
"Weren't you helping the teacher? Did you have time to do all that and still get here before me? And since when do you pay attention to what strangers are saying?" Anastacia doesn't mind that she seems excessive, but Carol's face shows a little annoyance when they finally lock eyes.
"By the way, what crime did I commit to get this interrogation? But yeah, I helped Diaz, went to the bathroom, heard the freshman talking about it in the bathroom and then came here, and it's not my fault you have legs for days but still walk like a slug." Anastacia closes her eyes feeling even more concerned and confused at the story she is hearing, she looks up trying not to sound too aggressive when she says.
"Funny, because you said that you heard Gabriel saying that they were talking about the party, what was he doing in the bathroom? Could you please stop lying? It's not a good look on you." Carol quickly moves from annoyed to irritated, and she loudly sighs looking up at the sky when answering.
"I didn't say that. I heard the freshmen talking about what he heard, I'm not lying, you are paranoid because of Iara and being a little bitch is not a good look on you, honey." Anastacia feels her face burning up, she opens her mouth to speak but never does, her mind trying to organize her feelings in a coherent way before externalizing them. She is sure that Carol is hiding something, when she finally decides what she is going to say, her phone vibrates.
She immediately checks it, because Josh is playing in the field, Carol is literally talking to her and she has everyone else silenced, so the only one that could be texting her would be her father. It wasn't, it was Iara, but she wasn't talking with Anastacia, she was talking with Nikolaevna. Anastacia immediately clicks on the message holding one hand up and saying.
"Shut up, this is important." Ignoring the "I wasn't talking" that Carol says Anastacia slowly reads Iara's messages, her jaw slowly falling.
Iara: This may be weird, but I wanna talk to someone and I can only talk to u because ur are someone far away from me
Iara: So... with all the wisdom u have from living 100 years, i have fallen in love with someone, maybe its not love and only lust but yeah.
Iara: Hes coming to my house today and last time we had some things like, I learned some things about him and he did the same with me but after he opened my fridge without my permission I got angry and yelled at him, and he left, so... i dont know.
Anastacia reads and rereads the messages, Carol sees that her friend has not shown any kind of emotion since taking out her phone and reads the texts over her shoulder. The Brazilian covers her mouth with her hands letting out a small "oh". Anastacia is still frozen, It has to be her! It has to be! It would be an unbelievable coincidence to have the same thing that happened to her also happen with some random boy, to the external world the cheerleader seems fine, maybe just a little confused, but inside she feels like her mind stopped working, happiness, disgust, anger, sadness, shame, every thought getting more wild than the last one. Deciding that she can't bear this secret alone she looks at Carol, and in a desperate whisper she says.
"It's me, she is in love with me–" She was going to explain everything, but the loud scream from Carol interrupted her.
"What?!" Not only did she grab the attention of all the cheerleaders, she also grabbed Anastacia's phone with a newfound interest in the texts.
"Don't scream, yeah that's me, that's the same thing that happened to me, it would be unbelievable that some guy did the same thing as I and then left and it's going to meet her again today, it's totally me, right?" Anastacia speaks fast and without much thought, she really despises the idea of Iara falling in love with some guy.
"I mean, it really looks like it's you... damn so she is actually bi or something? I always assumed it was because she really looks like she is a lesbian" Carol shrugs before giving the phone back to a very confused Anastacia.
"Who gives a flying fuck about that? She likes me, what do I say? Is she gonna attack me or something? I don't know her kind, like should I not go to her house?" Carol gets a little surprised at how invested Anastacia is in this situation, realizing it's probably the first time the other girl has had any interaction with someone that is not straight. She decides to be patient and try to explain everything to her friend, putting her hand on Anastacia's shoulder she says.
"Look, she is still a normal person, she ain't gonna attack you because of her sexuality, and it's pretty fucked to say "her kind" like she is a different species, she just likes to fuck girls." Anastacia goes from feeling worried and confused to immediate betrayal, since when does Carol think like this? She has said some hurtful things about lgbt people and she doesn't mind when they call Lily scissors, Anastacia hopes her voice doesn't sound too wounded when she asks.
"Since when do you think like that? homosexuality is a sin, and now you're defending them like they're normal?" Carol puts both of her hands up trying to make a pacifier movement.
"I don't mind them either way, it's their life right? And about the text you got, maybe you should just tell her not to go for you, or the boy, whatever!" Anastacia looks back to her screen still a little annoyed at how easy it was for Carol to accept this kind of behavior from someone, she runs one hand through her hair and trying to keep the cacophony of feelings screaming in her mind controlled she answers.
Nikolaevna: Wow, that's a lot, maybe you should go for it, go get your boy
"What?!" Once again Carol screams, getting all the attention from the cheerleaders and scaring Anastacia. "What the fuck happened to telling her to not go for you?"
"Well... I... I... I just, I don't know!" Anastacia locks the phone burying her face in her hands, she feels the embarrassment burn in her face, the confused look Carol gave, the curious eyes from the cheerleading club, it's almost like everyone wants to know some kind of secret she has. When a reasonable motive arrives in her mind she immediately turns to Carol with a shy smile on her face as she says.
"I know actually! It's so I can learn more about her and that way we have more dirt to use against her!" For a second the two girls stare at each other, Anastacia maintaining a straight face, trying her best to look like she believes in that reason, while Carol doesn't hide all the doubts she has, the brazilian sighs and shakes her head not bothering to pretend like she is not disappointed as she says.
"You do you Ana, I'm gonna go get the girls ready for training." She doesn't give time for an answer and quickly leaves meeting the girls with her usual happiness.
