Robin is eating lunch alone in the cafeteria. He is a huge fan of tacos. He is grateful that Marian went to the cafeteria earlier because he doesn't want to talk to anyone at lunch today. He needs a minute to think about all the things that Marian and he talked about over the weekend. Marian is encouraging Robin to be more clear to Aurora that he is interested in her. Even if it isn't exactly them going on a date. It's too soon for Robin to see himself dating Aurora.
While Robin is eating, Aurora walks in. She doesn't seem to notice that Robin is here. Robin doesn't know what to do. Marian would tell him to ask Aurora to join him for lunch. But the last time that Robin saw Aurora was the night of the noob hat incident. He was acting strangely. He didn't want to talk to Aurora right now and have to explain his bizarre conversation with her. It was a complete failure. Robin is resigned to pretending he doesn't see Aurora and hoping she doesn't notice him either. Robin dips his face down a little lower trying to hide behind his food.
Aurora gets her tacos and turns to look at the cafeteria. Despite his best efforts to hide, Aurora notices Robin. He is the only person she recognizes here. She starts walking towards him. Robin puts his hand up to cover his face, but Aurora is not deterred. She continues and arrives with her tray right in front of Robin. She smiles, looks at Robin, and asks, "Can I sit with you?"
Robin realizes that there is no turning Aurora back at this point. So he gets up, pulls out a chair next to him, and replies, "Of course." Robin tries his best to smiled back at Aurora, but it is a half smile because he is still worried about how to explain their last interaction. Aurora and Robin sit in silence for a few minutes. Robin doesn't even know where to start. He tries to speak. Nothing intelligent is coming to his mind. So he sits back and slouches lower. Aurora watches this and takes this as her chance to ask him something.
"I had a great time hanging out with your friends a few weeks ago." Robin breathes a sigh of relief at this. It seems like Aurora isn't going to bring up their awkward encounter from Friday night. "More like coworkers," Robin corrects Aurora. Aurora responds, "Oh, well, I had a great time getting to know our coworkers better. It's the first time I have been invited to go out with a whole group of you." Aurora pauses to take a bite of her food. This is the time when Robin should step in and say something. But Robin remains silent. He can't think of anything to say. Robin tries to remember back to what Marian said on Friday.
Luckily Aurora is not deterred by the pauses in the conversation. She seems to take to them naturally. After she finishes a few bites of her food she asks, "Do you go out with Graham and Marian a lot?" Robin should probably clarify that he doesn't normally go out. He likes to stay in. He doesn't want Aurora to get any ideas that he is a social butterfly like Marian. "Not normally. I usually do things by myself in my free time. I have been exploring the city since I moved here a year ago." Aurora smiles, "That's fun. I have been in this city for a long time. I grew up here. If you need any advice from a local, I could help you. I know all the best places."
Robin is genuinely curious now. He moved here for the job at Blahco that Graham got for him. But hanging out with Graham is limited to places he thinks will be populated by girls. Robin replies, "Really? I would love that. I haven't been here for too long so I am still getting used to the place." Aurora replies, "I can't remember the last time I went somewhere new. I am jealous." Robin takes this as a chance to ask her a question, "What do you normally do?" "I spend time with my family. I go out with my girlfriends sometimes. But not like drinking out. I don't like getting drunk. I would rather do other stuff with my time."
The conversation is finally flowing naturally. Robin is grateful for Aurora's persistence. He is finding out that they have many things in common. Robin is very close with his mom, and he would much rather go on an adventure around the town rather than meet up for drinks. Robin smiles a little and Aurora, "me too. I hadn't gotten drunk in a long time. But a week ago, Graham and Marian and I went out and had a lot to drink." Aurora asks, "Are you a funny drunk?" Robin gives a small laugh at the question. It caught him off guard a little bit. "I don't think that I get funnier. But I think other people seem funnier when I am drunk." He answers honestly. He doesn't want Aurora to think that he is a funny guy. He isn't. Aurora laughs at his answer. Despite being told his whole life that he wasn't funny, Aurora seems to think he is. Robin smiles a little bit bigger. This doesn't seem to be going so badly.
Graham had been eating in the cafeteria before Robin came in. He was sitting down and eating with two other guys from accounting. The two accountants were wearing professional clothes and had glasses on. One busted out his calculator on his phone during his conversation to prove a point. Whenever Graham hung out with other accountants, he felt slightly out of place. He was naturally good with numbers, but they weren't all he wanted to talk about. He also would never be caught dead in what they wore to work. Graham worked out in his free time and wanted to wear shirts that could show off his hard work. Graham got bored and began looking around him. He noticed that Aurora and Robin were sitting together in the cafeteria. He quickly dismissed himself from the others and threw away his trash. Next, he came and sat at a table directly behind Robin with his back to Robin's back. And Graham began to listen to their conversation. This was way better than anything happening at work.
Aurora has settled into a much more comfortable pose in her chair. She is done eating and ready to continue talking to Robin. "If you don't normally go out, what does a normal weekend look like for you?" Robin pauses for a minute to consider what he has done in the past month. "I run. But not at the gym, I don't like to pay to work out. I also usually go to this farmer's market near my place. I get lots of great fruits and vegetables from there. Bring them home and make myself dinner." Aurora is smiling and nodding as Robin is explaining this. "Is that the farmer's Market off Milky Way?" Robin, "No, I got to the other one along the river." Aurora continues, "That is probably why I haven't seen you. I go to the other one on Milky Way. I like grabbing some fresh flowers for my room." Aurora leans closer to Robin as the two are talking. She is feeling their conversation, it seems like Robin has relaxed and started enjoying himself.
Robin feels comfortable enough with Aurora to continue to share more about himself. They seem to have a lot in common and she seems interested in what he has shared so far. "I try to go somewhere new each weekend. I like new experiences but in small doses. I usually take my bike and that makes getting there fun too." Aurora puts her hands closer to Robin. "I like doing things I like more than doing something new." Robin smiles and also leans in a little closer to Aurora, "Me too." The two pause for a moment and Robin starts to feel hotter. This is going much better than he anticipated.
Aurora looks into Robins's eyes. They both start to blush a little. "Maybe next weekend we could do the farmer's market together and then I could show you somewhere new?" Aurora looks away bashfully and starts waiting for Robin's response. Robin is nervous. He can't tell if Aurora just asked him out on a date. He starts to think about the words she just said. Do any of them imply this is a date? Robin is a little dumbstruck and Aurora starts to back away a little. She tries to back peddle the conversation, "sorry" she stutters, "I didn't mean to invite myself." Aurora starts blushing even more from the embarrassment. How could this conversation go from great to crash and burn so quickly? Robin tries his best to save it. "No, this is good. Do you want to go somewhere with me this weekend?"
Aurora looks back at Robin and starts to get excited again. "Only if you do." She has to pace herself carefully. Robin looks at Aurora who is a mixture of anxiety, embarrassment and excitement. She is waiting for some words of affirmation from Robin. Robin looks back into Aurora's eyes and says, "I do." The two pause. It's two simple words, but to them it is the start of everything. Aurora gets excited, again, "So then it's a date?!" Robin freezes. He doesn't want this to be a date. He isn't ready to date. Robin tries to remember how Marian phrased it. He couldn't remember, but he did remember that Marian said he should be honest and upfront with what he wanted.
Robin takes a gulp of air and nervously responds, "Maybe not as a date, but just as friends?" Aurora is much less excited about this, "That works for me too." Aurora starts looking down again. She is tring to figure out what Robin wants for them, but he keeps sending mixed messages. "Any idea of where we should go?" asks Robin. Aurora decides to take the lead, "There is this super cool museum exhibit in town all about how cities are built. And all the engineering that goes into them. Are you interested?" She smiles a fake smile and waits for a response.
Robin realizes that this is his chance. He is going to be direct and to the point as Marian suggested. Robin smiles at Aurora, "I am interested." He pauses, and then less sure of himself continues with, "I am also interested in you." Aurora looks even more confused. But since Robin is still talking about it she feels like she can ask him more, "but not as a date?" Robin defends himself, "I like to get to know people better before I ask them out on a date." Aurora instantly relaxes. Suddenly it's clear to her that Robin is interested, but not ready to move into the date category with her. He needs more time. Aurora smiles a much more genuine smile at this, "Well that sounds like a reasonable place to start. If it helps, I am interested in you too." Robin smiles at this and says, "I hope we become more than friends, eventually." He smiles at this and starts blushing. Aurora is also surprised by this bold declaration from Robin and she starts blushing.
Graham is watching all of this conversation and looks over at the two of them at this point. He cannot believe what he is hearing. Robin just totally wooed Aurora. And it didn't suck. He wants to see their faces. When he does turn around he sees the two of them blushing at each other. Before anyone can say anything else, Robin's alarm goes off in his pocket. He gets up immediately and says, "gotta get back to work, see you this weekend." And like that, he is gone. Aurora looks like she won the lottery and Graham looks like he found a lost treasure. He cannot wait to tell Marian.
