As I drove from school, the familiar feeling of dread settled in my stomach. Today was the day I had promised myself I would visit my dad at the hospital. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but I couldn’t keep putting it off. The constant phone calls from the hospital reminding me of his condition were starting to weigh on me.
I parked my car in the hospital parking lot and took a deep breath before walking towards the entrance. The receptionist greeted me with a smile, but I could see the pity in her eyes as she handed me the visitor’s pass. I thanked her and made my way to the elevator, trying to push away the negative thoughts that were creeping into my mind.
As I waited for the elevator doors to open, I noticed a familiar face standing next to me. It was the new guy, the one with the jet black hair and sharp jawline. I couldn’t help but stare, but quickly averted my gaze when he caught me looking.
“What are you looking at?” he asked, his tone cold and challenging.
“Nothing, just waiting for you to get out of the way,” I replied, trying to sound nonchalant.
He narrowed his eyes at me but stepped back, allowing me to enter the elevator first. I pressed the button for the fourth floor, my heart racing at the thought of seeing my dad again. But when the doors opened, I was met with a surprise. The new guy had pressed the button for the fourth floor before me.
I stepped back, slightly confused, but he just smirked and stepped out of the elevator, leaving me to follow behind him. As I walked down the hallway towards my dad’s room, I couldn’t help but feel drawn to this mysterious guy. He seemed so confident and unbothered, a complete opposite of how I was feeling.
When I reached my dad’s room, I entered. My dad was asleep, but I could see the machines beeping steadily, a sign that he was still hanging on. I sat by his bedside, holding his hand and talking to him even though I knew he couldn’t hear me.
After a while, I noticed the new guy peeking into the room. “Is that your dad?” he asked, his voice softer than before.
I nodded, feeling a lump form in my throat. “Yeah, he’s been in a coma for a few weeks now. The doctors say there’s not much hope.”
The new guy’s expression softened, and he walked into the room, taking a seat next to me. We sat in silence for a while, just watching my dad’s peaceful face.
“I’m sorry,” he finally said, breaking the silence.
I looked at him, surprised by his sudden change in attitude. “Thank you,” I replied, feeling a sense of comfort in his presence.
We talked for a little while longer before I had to leave. As I walked out of the hospital, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the unexpected encounter with the new guy. Maybe there was more to him than meets the eye. And maybe, just maybe, this visit to the hospital wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.
