The rain did a light pick up, exposing the true length of her black hair going down mid-back. She coughed a couple of times, feeling her voice trying to come out.
“Get away from her! She’s going to turn into a gate!” someone screamed.
“Did a necromancer get to her corpse before the funeral?!” another yelled out.
“Guards! Kill her before she swallows us all!” the familiar woman’s voice roared.
It wasn't long before she was surrounded by swords and shields. As confused as she is drenched, she attempted to speak out, waving one arm in front of her.
“Wait…” The woman called out, meekly.
“She’s chanting! Stop her now!” the same woman yelled at the guards.
Progress: 97%
That slow moving bar needs to move faster.
She stepped forward again, “Hold on… I just…”
She held both arms up now. The guards were too afraid to get any closer for some reason, which was good for her. However, a man of great regality crossed into the encirclement and slowly approached her.
The other woman in question screamed out to him, “Your Majesty, get away from that thing!”
He ignored the lady and stared at the fake princess in front of him. She put her arms down after moving her hair away from her eyes. What a surprise that there was another who shared her cursed hair and eye color combination.
“Do you remember who you are, princess?” The man asked her.
The fake princess was about to answer his question until she took a gander at the progress bar in the corner of her eye.
Progress: 100%
Announcement!
Synchronization complete! Installing Princess Genevieve Ulrich’s memories! This will only take a moment!
The life of Princess Genevieve flashed before the woman's eyes. Each memory is as painful as the next. It provoked a pounding headache that could take a while to resolve.
The man who stood in front of her appeared in her mind. There was no love emanating from him. He displayed simple acts of obligation while borderline uncaring and lack of interest in the girl.
It was a fair assessment to say that he was Genevieve’s father…
…and the emperor of the Ulrich Empire.
She nodded her head at her new guardian, “Yes.”
His expression remained unchanged, “Then I take it that you know who I am as well?”
“Yeah. You’re my father…right…?”
The emperor crossed his arms, “You easily think of me as your father before saying my title?”
She blinked, “It’s only right to think that way. Am I wrong?”
“No. I guess you wouldn’t be…”
What a cold man.
The woman was cut from her thoughts when another popup appeared before her.
Announcement!
Installation complete!
Congratulations on your new life, Veronica! You're now Princess Genevieve Ulrich of the Ulrich Empire!
Reward:
Gift box x1
The woman, Veronica, flinched. When was the last time anyone had called her by that name? Veronica barely uttered her own name to others.
That's because it was taboo.
After committing a heinous crime, those who held her name changed it. They didn't want any association with a criminal such as her and rightly so.
And what’s with the gift box? She didn’t see any that magically appeared.
Veronica pondered. She was taken from her thoughts when she witnessed the emperor lift his left arm up into a right angle. The soldiers that were surrounding them dropped their guard and sheathed their weapons.
“The emperor ordered his guards to put their weapons down?” someone whispered loudly.
“You mean, it's not a walking corpse?” another whispered.
“It's actually the princess…?! I thought she died a month ago!”
As if trying to take advantage of the situation, the priest that lingered by the coffin called upon the others for attention. The whispers faded away into the dreary skies.
“Harken to me, fellow followers of Altani! Our god showed leniency and returned Princess Genevieve back to us in one piece!” The priest raised his hands in prayer. “He decided that it was not her time yet and breathed life back into her once more!”
“Praise be to Altani! The Almighty God of Mercy!” The priest chanted. “Glory to the Ulrich empire! Glory to the imperial family!”
Everyone in the crowd shouted in unison, “Glory to the Ulrich empire! Glory to the imperial family!”
A roar of applause and excitement erupted in the rain. Veronica scanned the area and was very much confused as to what was happening. Everyone clapped for that? They were willing to wear masks and be fake in front of Genevieve’s corpse just a few moments ago.
Being a god must have its perks.
“You look confused.” When the emperor said that to her, she turned to meet his gaze. “We should head back to the palace so you can rest.”
The popup window appeared between the two of them once again, warning Veronica of yet another inconvenience.
Announcement!
In order to give you the rest of your gift, your body will shut down for a day.
Commencing sleep mode.
Please wait…
“What? Are you kidding me right now?” Veronica muttered under her breath.
“What was that?” It was clear that the emperor heard what she said. He just wanted her to repeat it so he heard it right.
Princess Genevieve was timid. She would never kick up a fuss. Veronica is sure that the woman died through unnatural means. She wouldn’t put it past her if the culprit was living under the same roof as her.
Her memories only show the princess lying in bed for an extended period of time before she was pronounced dead. There would be a maid to bring her something to drink every night.
Was she poisoned over an extended period of time?
Her mind grew hazy. Whatever Genevieve died from, Veronica might have to go through it in her stead. Something tells her that the culprit will come back to finish the job.
“Ugh.” Veronica was annoyed. She slapped a hand on her forehead, which startled the emperor. “Just my luck…”
The tiredness won. The fake princess fell backwards, her limp body expecting to hit the ground. When her consciousness went, she didn’t realize that the emperor caught her.
—
There was nothing in this space. Veronica floated along in her deep consciousness until she came across something rather peculiar. Floating in the abyss but chained down, she came across an upright, gigantic red crystal.
Encased inside was the true owner of the body.
Veronica motioned closer to the rather large crystallized prison that held the true Princess Genevieve Ulrich. She was sleeping soundly, unaware of what had occurred to her, let alone her intruder’s presence.
They looked alike. You would think that they were twins that were separated at birth. The only difference is the peaceful expression that Genevieve gave while snoring away.
“I wish I was you,” Veronica mumbled. “Sleeping away without a care in the world.”
Technically, she was sleeping. Not like it was voluntary. The system forced her body to shut down in order to obtain some other gift. She still doesn’t know what her first gift was.
Veronica pressed a hand against the red crystal. A few ripples swept across it, revealing a new popup window.
Announcement!
In order to wake up the original owner of the body, the current owner must show proof of repentance!
Main Quest!
Save 100,000,000 lives!
Current lives saved: 0/100,000,000
…Excuse me?
“...” Veronica took her hand off the crystal, causing the popup to disappear. “Just send me back to Hell then. Burning sounds much easier than that.”
The system came back up on its own and frowned. She didn’t really care.
Is this its way of communicating with me?
“Save one-hundred million lives? How in the world am I supposed to do that?” Veronica questioned the system.
The system loaded a message.
Attention!
Would you like to receive your gift now?
Yes No
She got annoyed again and screamed at the system, “Do I even have a choice?! You practically forced me to repent by reincarnating me!”
“Ugh, fine!” She gave up and pressed ‘Yes.’
As she pressed her option, a blue aura escaped from the system and enveloped her. She felt more energized for some reason, almost as if she could run to a mountain and back without panting for breath.
The aura dispersed. She looked at the system in confusion. “W-what did you do to me?”
Another message popped up.
Announcement!
Congratulations! You have been bestowed mana! That’s quite a large pool you got there!
Your class will be based on your personality!
Analyzing personality traits…
Veronica crossed her arms and stared at the system as it loaded. She knew that her personality wasn’t the greatest but wondered what her ‘class’ would be.
It didn’t take long for the system to load a new message.
