She came out of the shadow across from the person sitting in the chair. They had long black hair, the two front sections held back by metal clips. The rest of their hair was braided back with multiple charms and clips in it. Their ears were long, going well past their head. They had a large white star mark on their head, contrasting against their dark skin and eyes.
Beside them was a black animal, with a similar body to a horse but with large ears sticking upright. Its almost completely white eyes looked directly at Ayra. One of their ears moved to the side. It hopped off the chair and disappeared before reappearing on the other side, their hooves clicking against the wood.
Weylyn motioned for her to sit down, and then opened a drawer in their desk. They grabbed a small box and opened up the seal.
"Please explain to me why you are here." Ayra twiddled her fingers as she began to vaguely explain why she was there.
"You are with the guild, correct?" Weylyn asked and Ayra nodded, "are you working directly with Rendel?"
"We were given this task by him, but we have kept details between us." The person nodded before turning the box towards Ayra.
"Good. Let's continue this conversation at another time." Weylyn tapped their ears and pointed around the room.
Inside the box was a piece of paper with an address and a date. She nodded, and Weylyn waved their hand, unlocking the door. Her hands trembled as she put the paper into her bag, making her way back to Kalin in the shadows. He was waiting by the entrance, reading a book.
Without saying anything, she grabbed his hand and pulled him outside. It wasn't until they were nearly back at the guild that she stopped. He was panting, leaning on his cane, trying to catch his breath. She looked around before sighing and leaning against the wall.
"Can you please explain to me what just happened?" Kalin asked, breathing heavy.
Ayra explained what happen, Kalin nodded as she spoke. The meeting date set for the following night. They made their way back, meeting up with Ren and Meyra.
Kalin rested his head in his hand on top of the table, looking off into the distance before saying, "The thing I thought was weird was that none of the fresh food was allowed to leave. Someone tried to take some, and one of the workers took it out of their hands."
Meyra took mental notes during this, thinking it was odd that none of the heads of staff were seen. Ren explained that they were typically stationed in the center of Dovin doing the behind-the-scenes work. They don't interact with the general public often, typically working with specific individuals or groups. There are too few of them to adequately service the public, so they hand off the work. Typically, there are one or two people stationed at each location that are higher up, and they will act as the heads there.
"When I first visited the guild, you mentioned people disappearing, is this still occurring?"
Kalin and Ayra looked at each other before nodding. They explained that it has become a regular occurrence, with one to three people disappearing each night. No bodies had been recovered, so families remained hopeful that they would return. No public announcements had been made, further unsettling the public.
The families of the missing have been acting out, calling for something to be said. Shop owners towards the border with Rildin had noted less traffic, as people were becoming more vary of outside. Some people were only leaving to get food at Cruxn and then go home or to the bar.
The group continued to talk until the late evening. Eventually they agreed to head to the shops around town to see if anyone recognized the people in Rodin. By that time, Ren was a bit merry from the liquor, as were the other two. They all hobbled off to bed, leaving Meyra alone.
That night, when Meyra went to bed, she felt someone tap on her shoulder. Turning around, she saw a ghostly feminine figure. They appeared to be confused, opening their mouth to speak, but disappeared before they could. She looked around for traces of the person to no avail.
When everyone had gone to bed, Kalin opened the letter. Inside it read that they would meet him in the middle of the night at a given location. When Kalin went to put it back in the envelope, it disappeared into a golden yellow smoke.
