Indigo by Julian Ferguson

Second Time's The Charm

Second Time's The Charm

Aug 16, 2024

The girls woke up to their bedroom door opening, light flooding into the room, and the sudden exclamation of "Wake up!" Turning their heads, they saw Kate, Mr. Sato's secretary standing in the doorway. Indigo groaned, rubbing her eyes. "Oh, Kate," she yawned. Kate nodded in return, a smile turning the corners of her lips. "You need to get packed, girls. You're all on the first flight back to France." As the other girls got out of bed, Kate turned and left before Indigo could ask any questions. Shrugging it off, she got her suitcase from under her bed and ran to her wardrobe.

"Did anyone else get like, no sleep last night?" Emily asked. "Well, we were kidnapped by our boss yesterday," Rose stated bluntly. "I'm not surprised you're frazzled." Emily shrugged, turning to Indigo, who grabbed some clothes and shoved them into her suitcase. "Did you sleep well? I was knackered," she asked. "I mean, yeah. I slept pretty well," Indigo said, zipping up her suitcase. "I could have slept better. I think we all could have." "Am I the only person who's always found Kate to be like... kinda creepy?" Keiko asked. Indigo hesitated before responding "No, yeah, she's really weird," "She's certainly... bizarre, but I don't think we should be too harsh. She's always been like a big sister to us," Rose said.

"She's totally dodgy. W-wait, isn't she like, only six years or so older than us?" Emily asked. "Why is she so close to Sato then? They're practically joined at the hip." The girls all gave a collective groan as they thought the same thing; Mr. Sato and Kate were probably a couple, at the very least, doing things. "That's most likely why he calls her Katelyn... pour l'amour de Dieu," Rose muttered uncomfortably. Indigo shrugged. "I mean, he's like, in his fifties, but at least it's legal." "Yeah, that's kinda the least we could ask for," Keiko chimed in.

"A-anyways," Emily interjected with a stutter. "We should probably get out and talk to Kate before she gets on our arses for being tardy or something." The girls nodded and headed out of their room to meet with Kate, who was sipping a cup of coffee and chatting with Mr. Sato. A normal thing that was now painted in a teasing light. "Ahem!" Indigo cleared her throat, making Kate turn around, and Sato looked up at her with a smile. "Ivy, dear," "Father," she said in response. The way she said it made it clear she took no pleasure in talking to Sato.

Kate bit her lip awkwardly, looking off to the side before turning her back to Sato and talking to the girls; "The plane is ready. I'm sure you remember where it is. I'm going to talk with Mr. Sato for a second, alright girls? You go and wait for me." Keiko, Indigo, and Emily nodded, although Emily did so with hesitation, but Rose remained indifferent as always. Turning back to Mr. Sato, Kate took another sip of her coffee as Emily huffed and muttered something about her trying to play off her relationship with him. Kate raised her eyebrow overhearing this, pushing her glasses farther down her nose teasingly. "Is there something you want to tell me, sir?"

"Grow up, Katelyn," Sato sighed, rolling his eyes. "The girls can think what they want about us, it doesn't matter. What does matter is taking out Louis." Kate's eyes widened with amusement, her stoic, subtle smile returning. "Only joking, sir." "Of course you are," he said, clearly unimpressed by her shenanigans. Kate chugged the rest of her coffee. "Wouldn't want to keep the girls waiting, would we?" she smirked. Sato stared at her, still unimpressed. She responded "We'll be back soon, I assure you," and walked away to where the girls were standing, outside at the plane.

"Took you long enough! I'm freezing my arse off out here!" Emily complained. "Maybe you should have worn warmer clothing, Emily," Kate said with a chuckle. "Now, get in, all of you." Getting into the plane and strapping in, they sat and chatted for the rest of the flight. Of course, they slept. It was a fourteen-hour flight, and it felt like it would never end by hour three. Kate got up and went to talk to the pilot when the girls were asleep... or most of them. Emily opened her eyes briefly to see if she had walked away, her breath hitching when she saw Kate had only just barely turned around to go into the cockpit. She looked around nervously, sneaking over to the door to listen in to the conversation that took place;

"You know what to do if they fail, right?", Kate asked the pilot. He nodded in response, saying "I fixed the self-destruct button." Emily's eyes widened, and she rushed back to her seat before Kate could see or hear her. "Who the hell puts a self-destruct button on a plane?" she thought. Suddenly, she heard Kate say something along the lines of "good to know" before Emily heard her heels clicking across the floor into the main room. Emily quickly dashed back to her seat and closed her eyes to make sure Kate didn't know she was awake.

Since she had her eyes closed, she couldn't see what Kate was doing. So, she listened in.

Seemingly, Kate walked over to the wall and opened a cabinet. She then heard glass clinking against more glass and liquid pouring. After that, silence. She probably got a cup of scotch or whiskey. "Maybe I could change Indie's mind about rebelling," she thought to herself.

Sometime later, they all landed in France again. The second time's the charm, they thought to themselves. They redid their plan; get a hotel, get some disguises, and think of how to take Louis out. Obviously, the seduction plan wouldn't work this time around. The four girls sit around the hotel room, watching TV, checking for hitmen and spyware, reading books, everything a normal hotel guest would do. "Did you have any ideas as to how to take him down?" Keiko asks Rose. She shrugged in response, idly flipping through a page in her book. "Great commentary," Keiko sighed with a roll of the eyes. "Well, how am I supposed to know? Indigo's the one that screwed everything up," Rose responded, shutting the book with a thud. Indigo's eye twitched at the mention of their previous failed attempt, as she was one rude sentence away from snapping at Rose.

"G-guys, we really shouldn't get mad at Indigo," Emily chimes in. "She wasn't equipped to go up against him-" Rose cuts through her comment, snapping at her. "I don't care! She should have been. Isn't she the best agent we have, or whatever connerie they say about her?" Suddenly, Indigo gets up, dashing over to Rose. "Shut up! Listen to me; I am the best agent in Grey Bones, and I don't give a shit about what you say," she exclaims, making Rose and Keiko flinch. "I will kill Louis, and I will enjoy it! Got it?!" Rose, getting over the shock, narrows her eyes. "God, you sound just Sato," she said coldly, getting up and leaving the room. "Rose!" Keiko says, running after her. Indigo glared at the two of them, her gaze softening when she looked toward Emily, who sighed in response, getting up and chasing after the two of them, while Indigo was left to sulk in the hotel room.

Later that night, the girls reunited in their room to get ready, so they would look good for the next ball. A masked ball, hosted by a different person in a different mansion, but Bernard was at the party nonetheless. Jarvis, after opening and closing the doors for the ladies, stepped into the limo and started to drive. "So, ladies, are you excited for this new attempt-?" he was swiftly interrupted by Rose, bluntly exclaiming "Just shut up and drive, Jarvis." His emerald-green eyes widened in the rear-view mirror as he cleared his throat, nodding and continuing to silently inch the girls closer to their second attempt on Bernard's life. The drive to the ball was incredibly long and awkward, and the silence was overwhelmingly loud. Eventually, the girls got to the ball, gracefully stepping into the main hall, blending in like shadows in the night. Emily, tapping Indigo's shoulder, whispered "I'll go look out for him with Rose, you and Keiko go team up." Nodding, Indigo grabbed Emily's hand, deciding to dance with others to blend in even more.

After passing her hand around to a few resplendently dressed gentlemen, Indigo's body went stiff as another man came up to dance. His cologne was memorable, like whiskey and tobacco, and his form was broad and muscular, even under the fancy suit he was most likely wearing. She couldn't see, as he was behind her, holding one hand in hers and draping one of his arms gracefully around her hips, pulling her closer to whisper in her ear; "Shall we dance, my dear assassin?" Indigo whipped her head around to see Louis Bernard, holding her hips closer to his. Just as she was about to speak, he covered her mouth, whisking her away to an unpopulated drawing room. She managed to squirm out of his grasp, about to grab her gun before he pulled out his, putting it to her head and shushing her. "Shh, now, now," he comments, his voice mellifluous and condescending. "We wouldn't want someone to get hurt, now would we?" She gritted her teeth, tilting her head slightly as she ripped off his mask, with him not minding at all, letting her remove it with a raised brow.

Smirking, he loaded the gun and pressed it harder against the side of her head, making her take a sharp breath through her teeth. "Didn't I tell you not to come back, Ivy?" he asked, gently removing her mask. Indigo was about to respond but paused. With her outburst towards Rose, her and Emily's conversation about rebellion, and Sato's kidnapping of her and the girls; Emily and Rose had a point. She was starting to sound like Sato, and maybe rebelling against him was a better idea than she previously thought. "You did," she said, licking her lips. "But I need your help."

Louis forced out a "Ha!" as he responded, "You need my help? Why could you possibly need my help, and why would I give it to you?" Indigo narrowed her eyes at him, slowly raising her hands. "You know me. Don't you remember, that girl you used to train with?" Louis's cocky expression turned into one of feigned confusion as his pressure on her head eased up a bit. "Oh, yeah... the short one." She dryly chuckled, hiding her relief as he removed the gun from her head. "I wasn't that... never mind. I need your help to take down Sato."

I actually wrote Kate with Sofia Boutella, the actress of Gazelle from Kingsmen in mind. I sort of just looked in my brain for a face and thought of her.
