Exhaustion soaks through me to my bones. The thought that this mortal, this human, Caspian, I was bound to him. Well bound to keep him safe at least. Humans weren’t formally allowed in Rosewood. It is the core of our home. Yet, this is the only place I knew that would allow me to heal and clean Caspain. There hadn’t been another option for me. Sure the use of my status had made this whole situation brought him more hours of time. The strangeness of why I even wanted to protect this human confuses me.

His eyes on me as I clean sent warm shivers through my soul. Why? This feeling whatever it is felt made  up. Never had a situation happened like this before. In the stories and myths never has there been this strong of a connection to another creature. Weird. Given that I simply despise those creatures.

With a sigh, I take the wet cloth with me as I step out of the bath and past Caspian. When I look at him I can see how close he is to allowing sleep to befall him. Even when he was at deaths door his peaceful expression when his eyes closed is cute. I walk toward the folded towels near the bench. After drying myself of and putting on a robe, I tug Caspian out of the tub. As I gently dry him off I can see where his injuries still bled. At least they were clean now and I wouldn’t have to worry so much about infection when I heal them in the bedroom. Though that left me with a problem. If I robe him now then he’s likely to get blood on it. With a gentle hand, I wrap Caspian up in the towel like a burrito holding him in my arms.

“What are you doing?” His accusatory voice sneers at me.

“I can’t have you getting blood on my robes.” I give him a toothy grin. My robes are made of the most delicate butterfly silk. Expensive, soft and elegant. The one I wore now is the same color and design of a blue monarch butterfly. The one I was going to dress him up in a silver intricate design.  Blood would not look good in that outfit. I had other clothing in my bedroom that would work just as well.

“I’m not bleeding that bad.” Caspian’s cheeks puff  as he looks up at me. It takes all my restraint not to poke one of them. Despite his protest I could see a red spot already forming on an area on his towel burrito.

I needed to get him to his bedroom fast. Despite the energy that it had taken to bring him back to life, his injuries were not a sealed as they could have been. I estimated as long as he wasn’t jostled around too much they wouldn’t reopen. Clearly when removing the dried on clothing and despite how careful I had been the stab wound to his side clearly reopened. It would need stitches. Lucky for me I had a first aide kit in my bathroom. Swiftly without further argument I turn toward the door way and quickly walk down the hall back up the stairs and down another arched hallway.

I could feel Caspian wiggle like he was trying to escape his safe burrito towel in my arms. No dice however, his wiggles lack any strength to get out of my towel burrito. It reminded me faintly of perhaps a dog who refused stay in a towel to get dry before dashing off leaving a trail of wet puddles through the house. My dad had been a bit furious when he realized I brought his most loyal familiar with me to the bath in the first place. I was a child at the time.

Entering my chamber it was clear that Thorin had done a beautiful job keeping everything in its place. From the silver drapery across the four posted bed frame. The sheets perfectly flush against the bed and the pillows nicely positioned against the headboard. Here I was laying a perfectly annoyed human on what once was a calm clean bed. I can already see drips of water from his hair touching the comforter.

“What the hell, Faelyn.” Caspian grumbles as he struggles to get out of the burrito that I left him in. He can’t see me from the angle he is at. It felt like the perfect time to get the first aid kit. By the time I’ve retrieved it from the restroom attached to my room, he’s laid out on my bed. All his energy entirely wasted now.

“I’ll stitch you up then get you in some clothing.” I say softly as I set the first aid kit beside him. The cut on his side spewing more blood than I care for.

“Can’t you just heal me with magic?” He grumbles as he tries to sit up. I move my arms to help him. The grunt of pain really has me hone in on how much pain he’s actually in and I frown.

“I used so much magic on you that my magic is nearly depleted. Any more and I will become ill.” I open the small leather bag that holds emergency medical supplies. Pulling all the tools I need, I smile at Caspian. “First I’ll apply some numbing cream and then stitch the wound. You might still feel some pain but it’s better to stop the bleeding before it gets any worse.” My human winces as I softly lathering the salve on his wound. I did try not to get too much blood on my hands. “This part is probably going to feel a bit strange but hold still.” With a grimace I pull out the stitch thread and the needle.

I kept every movement quick and deliberate. With each movement the skin on his body slowly comes melded together. He grunts once and I can tell that he’s struggling all he can to stay still. When I finished, I placed an additional salve on top that worked as a type of bandage to prevent the stitches from being damaged or coming free.

“Living hurts.” Moans Caspian falling back on the bed his hand over his eyes as he groans. I nod as I start to put my tools away carefully avoiding moving the bed too much. I can only imagine how much of him aches from the way that I found him.

“I’m gonna grab you something to wear.” I say softly taking the kit off the bed. After putting it aside I walk over to my closet. A whole room all its own with hanging pieces made by the crafters. Scanning the clothing with my eyes, I see the perfect attire that will match his eyes. A intricate design of silver leaves on a rose gold robe. After grabbing some undergarments from a wardrobe in the corner, I return to my human.

A part of me isn’t surprised he’s unconscious out when I reach him. Gently dressing him, I can tell some of his wounds will scar. Nothing about my magic will change that. After dressing him, I tuck him into my bed. Then realize a moment later that I positioned him in the middle of the bed leaving me nowhere to sleep. Well, not nowhere there’s a couch on the side of the room. I could move him there but he looks so comfortable and safe in my bed. Safe is where he needs to be. I close the curtains around the bed securing him completely with my magic. Typically, this would be where I was safe from nightly assassins.

See my clan isn’t the only one in Veilwood but we are the most powerful. The clan to the north seeks to claim our power. The only problem is that my clan is the one who protects the veil between our world and the other world known as the Void. The void often releases monsters every once in a while which we eradicate so that it doesn’t harm those in our world. From an early age we are taught how to fight them with magically enhance weapons.

The other clans are unaware of our task as they think our power is purely based on the magical connection we have with each other. A ceremony that takes place when we are young and drink of the fountain of knowledge. The water itself connecting us all to this world and each other. Together our magic is stronger together than apart.

I was told when I was young that my magic is strong and rare. The way the trees speak to me is on its own unusual. Those my age always treated me like it was odd but they respected me.  A  part of me always wondered if it was because of who my father is and not wanting to be on the bad side of the ancient elf whose watched this forest for a millennium or two.

My body aches as I walk over to the couch on the other side of the couch on the other side of the room. Reaching for a yarn blanket on the back rest of the couch and tugging it over my body. Magical exhaustion surging through my body making me feel dizzy. Celbrim had been right. I’d pushed myself too far. My eye lids feel heavy and I close my eyes as I hear the soft gentle breaths of Caspian across the room.

When a darkness comes for me, Faelyn is the only force stopping them from claiming me.

Mortals are a disappointment. They constantly stumble around wielding weapons and hurting each other over the most ridiculous of debates. Their intensity and pension for violence only makes my hackles rise even more. However, when this poor pitiful human is found at the edge of Veilwood barely clinging to life like a defenseless kitten, I choose to save it. When this creature is safe in my grasp, a great evil calls for his blood. After letting him into my home and brining him back to life, I must now protect and guide him into defending himself from this evil. Caspian is sure to be the death of me.

To Shield a Mortal is a Fantasy M/M Adventure with a twist.
