"Does anyone have an answer for the question on the board?"
Logan was slumped forward on his desk trying to carve circles in the wood with a pen to pass the time, letting the words of his English teacher pass into his ear and out the other end.
"Logan?"
Logan forced himself away from his very important task at hand to stare blankly at Miss Harrison, who was glaring back with an equal balance of disappointment and annoyance. To be honest, Logan had stopped paying attention to his teacher's lectures long before the 5th period lesson started, in fact, it was the second week of October in his second year, and he hadn't been invested in a lesson since last Christmas.
"Uhh... what was the question?" He asked with feigned interest.
The teacher sighed and rubbed her temple, "Logan, it's the same topic as we've been studying all lesson, in fact it's the same topic we've been studying since the start of the year! You should've been doing this for your homework... which is due in for tomorrow by the way."
If Logan was in a cartoon now, he would've done an audible 'gulp' noise, although it would've been sarcastic since Logan couldn't bring himself to care about the work they had been set, which he hadn't even looked at since Harrison handed out the papers a week ago.
With Logan's continued blank stare, Miss Harrison gritted her teeth in irritation and turned to a desk on the front row in front of her, "Theo, can you explain what a tragic hero is, and how it might link to Romeo and Juliet?"
Logan glanced at the person she was talking to: Theo Clark. From his angle, Logan could only see his back and the side of his face, he had chestnut brown hair which covered the back of his neck and threatened to grow to his shoulders if he missed one hair appointment, wore round glasses, and he could see the faint traces of a few freckles on his cheekbones. Logan knew this guy: Theo Clark was the notorious nerd of the school, he fit the stereotypical description with the glasses and always carrying around a stack of books. Although, Logan wouldn't say he was the typically timid, scared and meek nerd who was bullied on a daily basis either. He was by no means stacked with muscle or anything, in fact he was probably slim edging on the side of skinny, but Logan had seen people try to take advantage of his intellect before, and been suprised by how rude the guy could be.
Now, Theo didn't even look perturbed by the sudden request, instead he spoke up, "A tragic hero in literature is the hero whose life is usually that of high status or wealth, and the hero has a tragic, or fatal, flaw which leads to his downfall-"
Logan couldn't be bothered to listen to the rest of the over-analysed answer the nerd was about to give. Thank god, the bell rang a few minutes later, and Logan practically ran out of there, before being stopped in the hallway by an arm around his shoulders and a booming voice.
"Logan! You should've seen the look on your face when she asked you that question!" His friend Jake was cackiling in his ear at seeing his friend in such distress.
Soon, Logan was chuckling too, "Thank fuck I got out of there before she started lectures on my attendance again," he sighed in relief. Jake hummed and paused as if remembering something.
"Oh right! You coming to that party in our of town tonight?" Jake asked.
"Yeah, you mind giving me a lift? My dad's out of town."
"Sure mate, be ready at 9 it's a bit of a drive."
~~
Sure enough, Logan was on time for one of the first times in his life, although he was beginning to regret agreeing to come to the party, since Jake had "forgot" to tell him about the other three passengers he picked up as he was driving.
"Logan!"
Logan sighed as he turned to look at Hanna next to him, who had been trying to talk to him for the past hour in the car."
"Hmm?"
"Are you even listening?"
"Yeah 'course," Logan replied before leaning forward to ask Jake, "When are we here?" Squeezing his shoulder in a silent, "What the fuck? Why is she here?!"
Jake smiled apologetically at him and said, "We are here!" With a silent reply, "Sorry she wouldn't let up about a lift!"
Jake sighed as he got out of the car.
