Unfortunately, unless you can find a school with a course/major for comics and similar art, a lot of academia doesn't consider them "legitimate art." Which is bull-puckey, because they're an older art form than digital art and that's considered art. I think it's the knee-jerk reaction of thinking that anything that has a primarily "kid friendly" image is automatically childish and not something for serious professionals, and blah blah blah. It's gatekeeping, plain and simple.
